Title: Rom Comparison
Post by: smithy on March 19, 2005, 04:54:44 am
Being new to Zaurus (C760) I am asking the same question as everybody else which ROM to choose

Has somebody published a fairly recent ROM comparison

Thanks

My own feelings :

Cacko : same as the original but (a lot?) better. The only one which communicates with   outlook.

OpenZaurus(OZ)/opie: qtopia like. 100% open, fast.  Use more modern gcc libc versions etc than cacko. Not 100% compatible with qtopia apps.

OZ/gpe: X11 base, not mature enough imho though it works and has some nice features.

OZ uses the openembedded build system which is used for other devices as well (openwrt, I think dream also want to use this one)

PdaXrom: if you want X11 only, perhaps not  the best choice if you want a pda - by contrast with a mini-laptop/ desktop linux. No qtopia apps run on pdaxrom.

Try them all!

Hi !

Cacko rom is the only one to be on the "edge of technology" for me .... I had this Ambicom BT2000CF bluetooth card ....

No other rom supports it.

Even pdaxrom can't make it it seems !! (I talked lots of times with Laze and Sash up to no avail).

CACKO DOES SUPPORT IT !  for me ... this is the DIFFERENCE.

bt2000 card is supported under OZ - but in 3.5.2 we fscked kernel modules.

grab package from http://www.hrw.one.pl/_pliki/oe/ipk/ (http://www.hrw.one.pl/_pliki/oe/ipk/) and enjoy

I think it would be nice if someone did a Distrowatch -style page for the various Zaurus distros. If I ever find out what free time is, I'll do it up, if no-one else beats me to it.
