Dear Friends,
even after converting zaurus into English, part of the address Book is still in Japanese. Apart from this the sorting list is not alphabaticaly.
Is there any solution to this problem. I have tried many other addressbook applications but none of them work on my zaurus.
Early reply will be appriciated.
Regards
-
The sorting in the addressbook is by the Japanese syllabic alphabet order, that's cause it was designed for the Japanese market and as such they don't use the Alphabet (as you know it) for their names.
You don't say how you converted your zaurus to English but at a guess, you'll find a file called addressbook.qm in /home/QtPalmtop/i18n/ja/ delete that file and restart qtopia and the addressbook will be in English -however that won't solve the ordering problem.
There was a "fix" around for the older Z models, but you'll have to search the forums for it as I can't remember where it was.
good luck

i converted my system by the convert.sh file available at wbcd.org.
my question may be very basic but how to reach the home folder in zaurus.
i cant locate the file u said to delete
-
open up the console and
cd /home/QtPalmtop/i18n/ja
will get you there.
I wrote that script, what part of the addressbook is still in Japanese? can you send screen shots and the results of ls -al /home/QtPalmtop/i18n/ja
and I'll see if I can fix the script

The console is what you used when you converted to Japanese using the script from wbcd.org, although it may be named terminal or konsole or qkonsole or embedded-konsole (depending on your version of the terminal app and the Z)
To take a snapshot on the C760 you hold down Fn+Shift+C, don't know about the C3k sorry.
KA/PI is a much better PIM suite than the Sharp one - if you aren't going to use Japanse the try the KA/PI. You may not need all of the packages, ie kphone and kmail, but give them a try and see what you think

Ahh, okay.
Now I understand.
You won't find the .qm file as its gone.
The left over Japanese you are seeing comes from the AddressBook.conf file in /home/zaurus/Settings/
You have 2 options
1) Edit yourself
2) Copy the English version (attached below) into /home/Zaurus/Settings/
I kept the English version as I need to input a lot of Japanese addresses.
Note: You will ned to rename the file from AddressBook.txt to AddressBook.conf (I couldn't upload it as a .conf file)

Thanks, i will try it tonight.
BUT Now one more problem,
yesterday i installed KA/Pi KO/Pi ver 2.0.6 into my system.
Now the problem is that my zaurus addressbook dows not open. It just tries to open and then nothing happens.
All my Data is Dead
tried to import in Kapi but only fractions came, complete addresses are not at all visible

Could someone please post a version of addressbook.so that corrects the English tabs problem on the SL-C3000? I'd REALLY appreciate it.

Well to be much help I need somew more info.
Have you tried running the addressbook from the terminal? what errors does it give?
Also try removing ka/pi and see if that makes the addressbook come back. If so start installing each package one at a time, opening addressbook till you find out which package kills it

DEar Stu

Assuming [a href=\"http://bryandeluca.com/cacko/feed/addressbook_1.22-lite-1_arm.ipk]this[/url] came from the 6k (are there any docs available for cacko packages?) that doesn't work for me (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11399&view=findpost&p=73716). Do you need quicklaunch from a 6k too? Is the whole 6k ROM available anywhere?

Hi,
One of the FAQ pages on the Shirtpocket website seems to get the solutions:
http://www.shirtpocket.co.uk/spforum/index.php?showtopic=41 (http://www.shirtpocket.co.uk/spforum/index.php?showtopic=41)
I haven't tried that yet and have no idea where their files are from (own customized?). Anyone has ever tried out that solution?

Certainly am. Not sure what your doing wrong but here are some screen shots of my addressbook in Japanese mode and English Mode
Just to prove I'm using the Japanese addressbook
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Here we go with Japanese Entries
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Now copy AddressBook.txt to /home/zaurus/Settings/AddressBook.conf
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Voila, English Entries
If it didn't work for you, then maybe you have fast load running on the addressbook, if so then turn it off or reboot the zaurus to see the changes

OK don't know if I did someting wrong or if my C3000 that I purchased used (1 month old) has a different address book on it. It is named address book but when you open it up it says contacts, here is a screen grab of my "addressbook" and the icon for it.
Do I have a differentt program and not the "address book"????

If it looks the same, ie the Japanese text is changed to English then it DID work.
Otherwise I don't understand what your problem is. When I change the text in AddressBook.conf from Japanese to English the entries changes from Japanese to English too. I can't see Sharp changing the app so that it works on the Cxx0 and not on the C3k.

Sorry, Stu, I should have been more clear. The post I was refering to was [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11399&view=findpost&p=73716]this[/url]:
As far as I can tell, ~/Settings/AddressBook.conf just gives the order of fields in the picker and which are currently selected, so changing the text there wouldn't change the labels. However, it does seem to be recommended as a way of changing them (ref 1 (http://www.zaurususergroup.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=C-7x0%20Sharp%20Zaurus%20conversion) ref 2 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11581&view=findpost&p=72724)). I tried it, but found that it just creates new fields which don't show up in the record view page and aren't saved, so maybe it's just a way of changing the leftover Japanese names if addressbook.so from a sl-6000 is used (but then why not just delete the config file?).
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div] (http://index.php?act=findpost&pid=73716\")

BTW, I'm not actually using a 3k (see sig), I just hijacked this thread.
Thanks.

Ahh, okay. I think I understand now.
I think your problem is that you have to change both the [ImportantCategory] and the [InputItem] sections with the text you want changed (actually you maybe able to just change the [InputItem] but I've never tried that) just changing the [ImportantCategory] entry doesn't work.
Here is another screen shot - I changed "Middle Name" to "Happy Frogs"
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
But it doesn't display as a column name or on the main record view as you mentioned. I think the entries on the Main view may be hard coded and aren't affected by AddressBook.conf (they appear to be the same fields that are in the column view list)
I recommend moving to KA/PI (and alos KO/PI) it has a lot more configurability.

'fraid not -- I tried it using your file.

The name doesn't display, or the value? [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11399&view=findpost&p=73716]The names are hard-coded in the binary[/url]. If you can't see the value, then you can see how it doesn't actually work. In your images there are no values. If you display a populated record can you see the values? What about the Company and Department fields for example? You can see in your image that they are duplicated. Does it actually work to populate them?
I recommend moving to KA/PI (and alos KO/PI) it has a lot more configurability.

I'm planning on moving to Japan, so I'm expecting that the procunciation fields will be useful. (Of course, in that case, I should just learn the kanji field names ) Do you still use the Sharp or cacko addressbook, or have you switched to kapi?
Thanks.

Anybody know if this is the addressbook or something else?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=74768\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Huh? Oh, I see, you quoted (in full, without previewing) the wrong post -- you might want to go back and edit that. To answer your question, as you can see from Stu's images it doesn't look anything like the Sharp addressbook, so I'd guess it's something else... What's the executable called? Where'd you buy it from? What does the help button say? Is there an about menu?

This is what my "address book" looks like, came with my used 30 day old C3000 I didn't install it, there is no "about" info that I can find.
Where can I get the "sharp address book"?
Thanks for the info

The file you need to replace is a link in a writable filesystem to a file in a read-only filesystem, so just remove or rename the link and put the new file in its place, e.g.: # mv /home/QtPalmtop/binlib/addressbook.so /home/QtPalmtop/binlib/addressbook.so.orig; mv addressbook.so /home/QtPalmtop/binlib/
You might want to read a book on using Unix, and maybe also on Unix system administration.
