Title: Abandon My Zi...
Post by: Mahoro on March 30, 2005, 02:50:47 am
I am an owner of Zi 5500 (Yeap, an old PDA, but hey, it works fine    )

After I bought an IPOD (2G, 20GB 2nd hand@ ebay)
When it comes to musics, IPOD always has better sound and more friendly interference and don't have to swap cards for changing songs (OF COZ!!   )
I left my Zi untounched for a month...

I had bought the Targus wireless keyboard for notes taking, but found it rather useless when it comes to graphs and numerical formlas..

I had also bought the WiFi CF card as well, but I rarely found Wi-Fi spots...besides, my Browser (Opera 7.3 + Konqueor) crashed A LOT!!! ( I can't never login to yahoo or hotmail or others email accounts..)

For the PIM, I actually found it too troublesome to use.....might be my cellphone (Sharp GX25 is better....)

News reading......I found it too clumsy to "compile" the news website to PDB format.

I actually used it for manga (Jap-comic) reading, but found it too small to read....:/

And I rarely play games.........

Might be I can add a GPS for my Zi when I am able to drive...(soon)...
But the configuration really killing me.....(esp I am a Window user, know nth abt Linux except Zi)

I am kinda lost w/ my Zi......
How abt you share your experiences of your Zi,
I guess that help me a bit

I would recomend going back to a sharp baced rom.
If you take the unstable nature of OZ with the fact that you arent proficent in linux I dont think you will get any benifit from running OZ..

Do you find OZ unstable on your 5500? It works fine on mine, with almost no stability problems. I do admit that the configuration could sometimes be a pain (occasionally needing to use the command line, etc.).

I used it on my 5000d in early development when it was still gcc2.95 baced, it was almost as stable as the sharp rom and I loved it, however when I got my 5600 I tried using it for about a week.. My zaurus locked up on several instances and quite often I had software that would suddenly die, configuration is not an issue for me since I do it all from the command line anywase.. what finally made me switch back to a sharp rom was the fact that stablity became even worse when I had to use the backwards compatable libs on a couple of my most used apps.

For me its just my tastes, I swiched to linux about 5 years ago mainly for the stability and reliability, I never run bleeding edge software and try to always stick to mature and stable branches (I do have a box I use for development so in that case stability is less a priority) therefore I am not very tollerant of having my linux PDA run as unstable as windows.. or worse.

Ah, there is the problem, I think.
I had a 5600. watched someone do really nice stuff on OZ on a 5500 and switched form sharp to OZ. I hated my 5600 on OZ. My friends 5500 put it to shame. I guees it just "fit" the machine better. A 5500 on OZ opie is really nice. A 5600 on OZ opie is just...weird enough to make you unhappy, IMHO. Nothing big, just a touch here and there of things slightly "out of joint" I think the 500 experience is very different from the 5500 experience of OZ right now, and the assesment of OZ on the 56 is not really applicable to the 55.

my 2 cents

Not to give the OZ any bad press - but even I found OZ on my older Zaurus not as stable as I would have loved. Particularly since I was using my PDA regularly as a information tool and not development and testing purposes.

But of course that was back THEN, now I understand OZ has matured a lot.

But I dont get this - why should OZ on 5500 be stable and good while OZ on 5600 not so ? Are the platforms that different that OZ behaves differently on both ?
Just to understand how OZ is structured maybe...

Part of it seemed like voodoo to me too.

But part of it was the partitioning, and results thereof. Part of it was turning on the pxa cache-bug workaround that just slowed the 56 down horribly.

A survey might help though--- what percent of what platform useres use what rom.  I think you will find that OZ has high representation of the 5500, lower on the 5600, lower still on the x50&x60 series clamshells, and extemely low on the 6000.

If I am right, (and i very well might not be) consider the competing rom options. On the 55 there is OZ sharp and cacko-- on the clamshells the same plus pdaxrom. on the 56 there is only oz sharp and watapon, and on the 6, just oz and sharp.  I bet you will find a big difference percentage-wise between 5500 users who use OZ and 5600 users who use OZ, despite what would seem a pretty similar set of competing options. Maybe it is worth checking?

the 5600 has the xscale cpu instead of an arm, also most 5600's have a bug in floating point processing (250, 255 is ok), there is a fix for the bug but it slows things down.. However i have a kernel without the fix and it is very stable.
I have a feeling the OZ development team dosent give there 5600 version much attention... I feel the same as adf, OZ just dosent seem to fit well on the 5600.. It makes sence because OZ on my 5000d ran waaay better than OZ on my 5600.. my opinion on OZ may be completly diffrent if I had a 5500,

Hum...
I found OZ is the best OS for 5500..
Those PIM and application even run faster then my Friend's C700 @ sharp(cracko) ROM [ Since he wanted to syn w/ his Mac machine, he had to forsake X......)

OZ do get mature a lot when compare from 3.5.2 then 3.2 (when I just started using my Zi)
But things get a bit unstable when I use Oz-compat lib....
And the browser never work right for me.....(kinda wasted my wifi CF card :/)

I'm actually having a great time with OZ on my 5500, I'm using the Opera 7.55 package someone created here in the forums with the crystal icons that has been tweaked for use with OZ.

I've got all sorts of things working with the compat libs, Three kinds of java, Two emulators, Opera and something else I cant recall right now , GPS stuff I think.

Maybe you should reflash , install oz-compat to your SD, install opera to your SD, makecompat opera and give it a fresh start.

This is/was true as none of the team possessed a 5600. Makes it difficult to test, etc. ;-).

I think the 5600 is now far better supported as some non-core developers (and this is where you lot can help too) have been using/testing/modifying/making better.

My understanding is that it's now working fine (I seem to remember that someone on the core team might also have been lent/given one, I'm not sure though).

Which one? I've had no troubles with Opera6, and Konq looks like it works too (though I've not really tried it much)?
