Title: Restoring The Zaurus To Factory State
Post by: salparadise on April 01, 2005, 10:32:08 am
Is it possible (as a last measure) to restore the Zaurus to it's original state? (I spent the entire of the last 2 days at work trying different ROMS and different apps. S'a good job it's quiet at work at the moment).
Bearing in mind I sort of didn't back it up when I put opie on it.

I can't seem to find a link to somewhere I can get the original Sharp ROM.

Many thanks.

Oh,
I've already got this file.
I got confused because it contained a file called "ospack" and not an initrd.bin file.
Do I just flash it to the Z as with the OZ ROMS?
What about the zimage file?
Or does it work as a stand alone file?

thanks

Sharp rom images only need the one file.

Be Verry carefull when you flash a sharp rom that you have power to the Zaurus at all times, Sharp roms re-write the bootloader as well as the rom so the potential for bricking a Zaurus is much higher with Sharp roms than with OZ or a third party zImage / initrd combo.

OOOH Yes, Be sure to follow the flashing instruction explicitly when flashing back to an OSPACK. If you have a little knowledge of Linux you can search for and compile Romburst. That will break the initrd and zImage files loose from the OSPACK and you can flash with those as an added measure of security.

I have been a persistent chap and have managed to get the Z on line through the USB
cradle.
Happy or what?

Just need to sort out the finer details of installing and linking.

I picked the 32-32 zimage,  is this best for space to install to?
Stuff that gets installed to root (which has less than 2000k left before any installs) shows up as installed. Stuff that's installed to ram doesn't show up.
How do I make root bigger?
Does ipkg link sort out the links for stuff installed to ram/cf?

many thanks

The nightmare ends.

All sorted now.
I think I've got it just right.
After dozens of reinstalls (I'm glad it only takes a fw minutes).

What a sweet little gadget.

Thanks for all the help folks.
Much appreciated.

Here's another newbie. It's now my 3rd day with sl-5500. Yesterday I updated it into Sharp rom V3.13 with this package:

It seems that in that process I lost Office software (commercial?), Java and some games. Is it possible to find those packages somewhere. This is not big deal, because I will use my zaurus primarily as on-the-road email/ssh/webmachine).  Games would be nice though.

V3.13 upgrade was just exercise. It seems that cecko is the right system for me. I think I will flash that this evening.

After trying various ROMs and restoring it with the above mentioned 3130 ROM (which doesn't have Hancom Office as you rightly say), I have to say that Opie is the best.
GPE is more or less useless - I don't know how this could have been released, it's painfully crap.
I now have Opie Sheet, Writer, Tiny Kate, Email (sort of) , several games, Gutenbrowser, OpiesFTP plus the standard Opie stuff and am happy enough.
I'm not hugely keen on kde and would have much preferred the gnome based one but the package manager doesn't work, most of the time the text editor doesn't save properly and the range of apps isn't as good.

I'm happy to accept that some of this may be due to my own inexperience.
But Opies is doable.

I'm still a bit lost here, so let's see if I have got this right: Sharp roms (and relatives, like Cecko) have Qtopia, OpenZaurus has choise of Opie and GPE.

So you are using OpenZaurus, right?
