Title: One Smartphone, 5 Operating Systems
Post by: nilch on April 06, 2005, 11:49:30 am
http://www.smartphonetoday.com/articles/20...-Axia-A108.html (http://www.smartphonetoday.com/articles/2005/4/2005-4-5-Zircon-Axia-A108.html)

Just saw this article about this company  - Singapore's Oswin Technology plans to take the multi-platform stakes to another level, the company will release Palm, Pocket PC, Linux, MXI, and Windows CE editions of its new Zircon Axia A108 smartphone all using the exact same hardware.

This of course is nothing new, but the interesting part that caught my attention was the last lines
" Axia A108 owners will be able to ship their phone back to Oswin and have their smartphone's OS changed."

Aha - now if that can be made so that users can do that themselves - even more power to the user.

Even cooler would be more than one OS on at the same time.

Dual boot Linux and Palm? Yes please!

And by the way, aren't WinCE and Pocket PC the same thing?

I doubt the survivablility of the company which still needs to secure market share as well as provide sound after-sale service.

Handphone companies, which have  decided on the OS, have to put good effort in fine-tuning OS implemented on newly launched handphones.  They often faced difficulty and solve the problem by launching new model soonest.

I do not think the company can cope with problems from the multiple platfoms.  Let's keep an eye on the development.
