Title: Newb Question On Changing Locales
Post by: Scot on April 09, 2005, 03:41:55 am
I've searched the forums here and found numerous ways to switch the SL-C3000 to English/partial
English mode.  Since I want to keep full Japanese capability, sounds like the locale methods are the best for me, but I don't know exactly what the Zaurus does when I change the locale? Can I change
this file and reboot and back multiple times and have identical behavior each time, or does the
lcoale changing do anything destructive?

(In case I'm not clear, I'm talking about

> 1) change /home/zaurus/Settings/locale.conf to read 'en' or 'zh_TW' instead of 'ja' for the language setting.

Can I change to en, try it out, then change back to ja and have everything as before?)

Thanks,

Scot

Haven't tried on the C1000/C3000 yet. On the 860 it is non-destructive.

Thanks, Kahm - that's SOME information, but I'd hate to be the first to find out it's destructive on the 3000!

AFAIK the changing of the locale does nothing but tell qtopia what .qm files and fonts it should be using to display the correct language.

Unless some major changes have been made to the C3k qtopia this is by design an non-destructive operation. If anything does go awry you can always reflash/restore the Z back to factory settings.

Thanks, Stu. I figured the locale change would be non-destructive, but you never know
what some "clever" programmer might decide to do now and again...

If you want full Japanese capability, leave the locale set to Japanese, and use Stubear's script to convert the default apps' menus and icons to English. Links to the script can be found by searching the forums.

Thanks, ashikase.

I tried changing locales back and forth and it looks like it is indeed a non-destructive operation, as expected. Cool! :>
