Title: C64 Emulator Total Newbie Needs Help
Post by: retroparadise on April 12, 2005, 04:06:10 am
hello,

this is a request from a total newbie.  i have my 760 for over 1 year but i only use it as a translator for japanese/english. i also bought it for playing retro games like i used to do on my pdas before, but i stopped using it for that because all was too complicated. i am using it with the original rom 1.20JP

i downloaded many emulators apple ii, atari, c64 but i got none of them to work.

so at least i want to play c64 games on my c760... but what do i need to do?

i downloaded the ipk file for the emu and for the gui but even i try to start it it does not work. i have all the necessary rom files on my zaurus (please do not ask me where, i just copied them from my pc to my zaurus)...but where to go from there?

as i said i have no idea about what to do... i searched on the net but things like terminal mode, root user access and so on are all greek to me. can anybody help me with a step -by-step way just to get that one c64 emulator running? i owned many pdas before (starting from newton, over palm to ppc) but i never had any trouble installing third party soft like i have here on the zaurus.

any help deeply appreciated,

marc

What files do you have now? If you give me a list I can get the same ones and see if I can get it working. The only catch is I have a C3000. It might be different.

Do you have a file browser?

Those 4 files should be in this directory

/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/frodo

Kernal ROM
Basic ROM
Char ROM
1541 ROM

Tree!Explorer QT Ver1.75 is good. The free version is good enough but the real version is even better.

Then you can check and move files around.

Hello,

yes I did all that.

All ROM files are in the correct  frodo folder. But no change. When I click on the Frodo icon (not the Frodo GUI icon) part of the screen turns black and the machine freezes. Same as before

Hello,

Here's something to try:
Bring up the FrodoGUI.
Click on the 'cycles' tab.

What are the settings?
63, 23, 63, 64 respectively is what I have, and it seems to work.

I had a weird problem when I first set up Frodo where the settings
for cycles somehow got reset to 1, 1, 1, 1 (or something like that),
which seemed to be causing a black screen lock up in the Emulator.

Seems to be a bug in FrodoGUI...
I deleted the config files to get things back to normal,
but changing the settings as above should also do the trick...

Incidentally, if you get a Lockup on the emulator, pressing
the Menu button on the C760/860 (and probably related
models) should hopefully get you back out to Qtopia.

Goodluck! Let me know how it turns out.

Cheers,

Ford

  hello ford...

yes FINALLY got that baby working! There was a problem with the graphics library but now fixed

now I only wonder how i can switch disks during gameplay... (in original 1541 mode) when i gop back to the giu and then back to frodo it restarts...

-is there any way to play multiple disk games?
-is there a way to save games? or do a snapshot file?

cheers,

marc

Hi Marc,

You can save games by turning on the drive emulation. That will
let you write to the disk image you're using at least (assuming your
game is stored on a .d64 file).

Screen snapshots you can do with do with other tools. Emulator
memory snapshots - dunno. Haven't tried.

I don't know how to change disks. If I recall correctly, the guy who
ported Frodo mentioned he had some problems with the SDL libraries,
such that he couldn't get changing disks to work.

I think he wanted to let you return to Frodo GUI so that you could change
images then switch back to Frodo. I've tried to do this, but the emulator
gets reset during the swap so dunno how to make it work. If you figure it
out please let me know

Frodo is a pretty good emulator, but x64 ("VICE") seems to have better
support for some games etc. I toyed briefly with the idea of  porting that to
the Z's Qtopia environment (perhaps using SDL) but I'm guessing it would
be quite a bit of work.

Cheers,

Ford

Dear Ford,

thank you for the input. Yes it seems like the Frodo port still has some rough edges that limit its functionality. (Especially swapping disks)

Would be great to see an alternative for Frodo on the Zaurus. There still is a big installed base of C64 fans around the world...

Yes, this is true. It is still not possible to change disks while Frodo is running. So you can only use games/applications which use on disk.

I'm now working to integrate the GUI into Frodo directly, that makes the external program FrodoGUI obsolete. At the moment the the GUI is already viewed but the preferences are not really set and it is not stable yet.  I do this in my spare time and I hope I can finish this soon (this year  ). I will release it, when it is finished and stable and an Onscreen Keyboard is also implemented which is necessary for running Frodo on the Nokia 770.

The GUI integrated in Frodo would also help to run Frodo on Maemo (Nokia 770) and maybe GPE. At the moment I only have a version for the PC and Nokia 770 compiled, because I don't have a Zaurus development environment set up yet. I hope I can set up one again for the Sharp ROM ore maybe OpenZaurus/OpenEmbedded. Maybe someone can help to integrate the changes in OpenEmbedded once its finished.

Unfortunately I haven't much time to work on Frodo in my spare time. So I only make slow process. But in CVS Head is now a first version of Frodo with a SDL GUI. Maybe it is already useful on Zaurus, but I haven't tested it on Zaurus yet. At the moment it is not really tested and not all GUI dialogs work, but for example the dialog for the drives should work. It is not completely finished yet!!!!!

My main goal is to make Frodo useful on devices without keyboard. For example on the Nokia 770/800 or on the upcoming OpenMoko phone. At the moment my main target is the Nokia 770 what is also the reason why I don't compile and test it on my Zaurus 5500 at the moment. But If someone wants to make alpha tests on the Zaurus, please do.   But you must compile and package it by your self.

So the main problem for the Nokia 770 and other devices without keyboard is the nonexisting on screen keyboard in Frodo. So this is the next step I'm working on.

Btw. I have attached screen shots from the new Frodo SDL GUI of the main dialog and the drive dialog.

Hi blachner!

I'd like to try compiling FrodoSDL for pdaXrom. Where can I download the source?

Thanks

Hi blachner!

I'd like to try compiling FrodoSDL for pdaXrom. Where can I download the source?

You can get it from CVS (HEAD of repository Frodo4):

cvs.cebix.net:/home/cvs/cebix

Anonymous CVS access to checkout should work.

Than run the ./autogen.sh script in the Src directory.
And after this: ./configure --with-embedded-extension=qtopia
This configures Frodo to use the SDL GUI and a screen resolution of 320x240.

Regards

Bernd

Hi blachner!

I'm sorry but I've been unable to download your cvs code. I tried this:

cvs -d :pserver:anonymous@cvs.cebix.net:/home/cvs/cebix login

Thats asks for a password so I push enter and then it says

no such user anonymous in CVSROOT/passwd

Could you please give full instructions for cvs access please?

Thanks!

I sent you a personal message.

But for anonymous access to Frodo CVS, have a look at: [a href=\"http://frodo.cebix.net/]http://frodo.cebix.net/[/url]
