Greetings All,
I just entered the world of the Zaurus with the purchase of a SL-5500, and am now looking to get it doing cool things like wireless internet, attaching a GPS, bluetooth, etc.
I've been out of the loop for a while as far as PDA's are concerned... my last PDA was a Palm V which did not have expansion capabilities.
So, as I am looking at wireless cards, and storage cards, etc, what is the deal with CF and SD cards?
Ive seen accessories for both, and they seem to be at similar prices, so is one type of card better than the other? Maybe CF cards are better for networking / connection stuff, and SD cards are better for storage?
I don't know, so what do all suggest?

Use SD for storage, CF for devices (WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.).
The reason for this is that SD devices (stuff other than storage cards - e.g. wifi, etc.) don't work on the 5500 (no sdio).

same as lardman, I dont have any CF storage devices, I like to keep it open for Wifi, Camera and soon GPS..
and my case also carries sd cards much easier than CF cards (cf are too thick really)

Thats exactly the kind of inside info I was in need of. I would have bought a SD IO device not having any clue that the 5500 does not do sdio.

Dont forget to get a small CF card for flashing new ROM Images.
I have a 32mb card I use just for that purpose.
Oh, I believe that if you are interested in movie playback that movies may play better off of CF than they can off of SD due to CF being faster.

The 5500 that I bought came with an 8MB CF card, which I believe will work for flashing ROM images, and I was probably eventually going to pick up one of the Kingston 1GB CF cards in addition to an SD card of some yet to be determined capacity.

Many people use SD as the resident card for installing programs and files. Many people use the CF storage cards and microdrives as removeable storage (mp3, movies, ipkg , roms and backups).

Unfortunately, your 8MB CF card won't work for flashing roms - I believe you need at least 32MB (I think the rom image+kernel image just take up just a little more space than what a fat formatted 16MB card will give you).

sl-860 & cacko will reflash off an SD card.
I've got a lexar 1GB which works v well, still hoping for 2GB sd cards to appear soon.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, however I just bought a Zaurus 5500 out of the box and don't know much about it.
So, I was doing a little research and found that some wireless card also has storage capabilities. Are those any good?
And for reading this thread, I assume that I should have a 32MB SD card specific for flashing and another one as I wish, right?
Do you guys recommend any wireless card? I mean a brand that I won't have compatability problems. And if I need anything else for right now.

any memory card of decent size, but you'll find 32 & 64 MB cards are *really* cheap these days, either CF or SD will do for 760/860, but on 5xxx you might have to stick with CF.
if you want to be safe, the socket/symbol CF wlan card is a good bet - look on ebay. I'd avoid the ZoneNef ZCF1100 "Mercury" or other Senao cards. Avoid SD wireless cards with/without memory, there's no driver support.

I'm unloading my 5500 soon, but I'll chime in that both
D-Link DCF-660W (CF)
and
Sandisk Connect Low Power Wireless LAN Card (CF- without memory)
work just fine in an SL-5500 and require no additional drivers. The Sandisk uses about 15% - 20% less power.
Also to the original poster about CF vs. SD. You can get an SD adapter for your CF slot. It's basicallly the exact same size as a TypeII CF card and the SD card fits entirely inside it. Also works fine on the 5500. You can also get ones that are the size of a Type I CF card, but the SD will stick out.

So, a CF wireless card, a SD 64MB card(for flashing) and another SD(maybe 1GB) are all the optionals I need to start.
My Zaurus is coming in a week or so.

On the 5500 and 5000D you cannot flash with an SD or mmc card. It must be a CF card.
Not sure if you could flash via an SD->CF adaptor.
