I was just wondering what you use as your Zaurus carrying case. I'm relatively new to the Z (coming from Palm, the land of form-fitting cases for inferior hardware;, and am still looking for the right case.
Right now, I am using a Body Glove universal case, but it is a very tight squeeze for the Z, tight enough that closing the case usually pops one of the edges of the screen protctor off. I'd like to lose the cover, but with the wiress card in the case, I'm afraid the screen would get broken.
The other option seems to be a small organizer, or larger case similar to an organizer/wallet. The downside is that it won't fit in a pocket, and could get a bit unweildy.
What solutions have others created?
Thanks,

I found a ladies wallet, that is the right size for a sl5500 the other day in a discount store for 1 euro. I cut out a kind of webbed thingy they had holding the compartments together and now it's perfect for my Z and wallet stuff combined, as well as leaving just enough space behind the Z where the case folds, for my Papermate PhD easy grip pen/stylus/mechanical pencil combo. It's only slightly bulky in the pocket, but I wear my pants baggy and carrying a Zaurus in my shirt pocket sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

I use a nintendo ds bag.

Piel Frama cases are the best in my opinion. Only reason we sell it.

This may sound a bit odd, but I use a sock.
It really makes a great case, it is also fun to get weird looks, as everyone is always wondering what I am pulling out of a sock.
It is form fitting, soft and protects it from scraches really well. It is also really cheap, so I can put the money to buying more electronics
Just be sure to use a new sock, otherwise it might be a bit smelly.

I was just thinking about this - which one do you use? I quite fancy a hard case, something aluminium or plastic.

I use a custom fit case from thepouch.com. It's water resistant and a pretty good shock absorber, but like lardman I too would be interested in a good hard case.
-
Before I got my Z, I saw these in a camera shop. It's on my list to see how good it really fits...

good idea, wonder if it will fit over the piel frama case.....with a little extra room I would guess. BTW the piel frama case is great.

You should take it and get tux embroidered on it. Then you'd have a Zaurus sock, just like Apple has the iPod sock!

Hey guys here's pics of the case I use. Picked it up at CompUSA for about $20 a couple years ago.

barry, just stop it!
i mean it
what did the poor zaurus do to you anyway?
http://homepage.mac.com/barrywoods/PhotoAlbum29.html (http://homepage.mac.com/barrywoods/PhotoAlbum29.html)
anyway, good attempt at adding light to the keyboard.
has anybody tried those usb lighter things which connect to the usb and gives you light?
i was tempted but not sure how the usb power is sent out of the zaurus...........if it has any and i do not wish to try .........er i mean fry my zaurus.
for the lugging a zaurus around, i still use a targus which zips up like a dayrunner closing the whole thing. The only drawback is velcroing the sucker to it which i did not mind after using the zaurus 2.5 years.
-
hey I never thought of that, maybe I should check and see if there is any power output, I think there is, all you would need is a resistor so you could limit the current the led is using, leds cant be any more than 20-50mA
-
You mean like this?
[img]http://idisk.mac.com/barrywoods/Public/usblight.jpg\" border=\"0\" class=\"linked-image\" /]
-
exactly but i know you didnt connect that to your zaurus right?
and why bother torturing the poor unit like you did before?
now barry has "the most expensive flashlight in the world!"
im using a c1000. i wonder if it works. Been hearing horror stories from the other fellers especially about meanies' dead 3000 with using a bad usb adaptor.

With the clamshell models, you can just fold it part way closed and the light from screen is enough to illuminate the keys.
By the way, BarryW, I noticed your powerbook mods. I've done a few (http://www.applefritter.com/node/976) things (http://www.applefritter.com/hacks/tronbook) like that myself.

It's a clip on keyboard light. I bought it for my purple powerbook. It's powered by the Z in that picture. My new powerbook has the cool backlit keyboard. I've not hurt my Z yet! Everything can be put back to factory. Minus a couple filled holes in the case...

I just get the bigest bag I find.
If you can say this is big...
I have lots of things with my Z.

Yea, I saw your stuff there. My purple book is in the fourms, never submitted any thing for the mod section.

I use the Piel Frama carry case for my sl6000. It is the standard 'zaurus quality' (can't be beaten).

Older post, but I'll through down.
I have used for a while a plastic index card box lined with a bit of cloth. Hard(er) exterior, soft interior (I determined in a 7th grade experiment in designing a protective container for eggs that this usually works best). It was mainly the fact that the size was just about exactly right..
But I actually have recently moved on to a generic Targus case that I picked up at Fry's for $10. It's soft all around, but it has a nice inner pocket to hold a flat CF I/O card or data card of some type.
I ws looking to pick up this hilarious case I found in Den Den town that had some Engrish on it (something like "ZERO Case - To protect for device from powerful Bang" or something like that) and was reinforced with metal framing in the sides and edges, but it was few milimeters to small.
Edit : Well the case says "Zero*Shock - Bump 'n Bang Protection" it still cracks me me up. But that probably just says more about me than it does the case...

I Use This:

I Picked it up at Comp-USA, fits my 5600 perfectly, I can even plug in the charger without removing it from the case.

Yes. They are good. But I just returned a C3100 case, because it is totally useless.
It has a transparent plastic layer over the keyboard - which makes typing difficult. Also the same layer does not allow the screen (top part of the C3100) to close completely.
Piel Frama will try to redesign the case. But for now: it is really really bad!!!

I have a couple for my C3100
A slightly tight fitting case with good padding perfect for paching your C3100 in with hand luggage or overnight bag - (Game PSP slip case)
http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11234&mid=326204 (http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11234&mid=326204)
A Soft pocket type case with a useful pouch on the front, bulky but good, remove the gankey logo and you are good to go! - (Gsmeware Nintendo DS slip case)
http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11229&mid=325654 (http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11229&mid=325654)
I found the best of the bunch today, a hard case that fits snugly even with a wifi card sticking out, bonus marks for being watertight!, very easy to open, still fits in a pocket. Two clips to seal the case, you can get at your Z really quickly and can just open the case, open the clamshell and work away without taking the Z out fully, then just close up and walk on - or was that warwalk on ;-) - (Ultimate Survivial Hard Cache, designed for kayaking etc.) On closer inspection this is a rebadged Otterbox 2000
http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/ultimate_survivial_hard_cache/ (http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/ultimate_survivial_hard_cache/)
It is worth checking out some of the other Game PSP accessories like
Car power adaptor
http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11234&mid=326192 (http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11234&mid=326192)
USB & power cable - only use it for one job at a time (seperate USB & power plugs)
http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11234&mid=326193 (http://shop.game.net/ViewProduct.aspx?cat=11234&mid=326193)
And an external 3800MAH Battery pack

Who said I like gadgets!

A hard case intruiges me. My biggest question -- if you dropped it with your Z inside, would your Z be OK? (Is it padded on the inside?)
Would you recommend this case for general use, or prefer something else to it?
Thanks,
Armagon

check this one out
http://www.styluscentral.com/alhacaforiph.html (http://www.styluscentral.com/alhacaforiph.html)
it's only 0.1" thicker than the SL-5500. It's something I want, but haven't gotten around to getting it yet.

I've had no problems with my Neoprene case special ordered from ThePouch.com ... has a belt loop and a pocket for my CF network card.
-
In a couple posts I saw yesterday, someone highly recommended the Grinder Gear Basecamp case. He said it took a fall off a motorcycle in motion without a scratch.
Myself? I use an old Psion leather case, of course.
It holds my 5500, pen/sylus, business cards, wireless cf, earbuds, and USB sync/charger, with more room to spare.

...He said he fell with his motorcycle, having the case on his belt (using the swivel-clip). He got on his feet again, reached to his belt and, ... the case and the Zaurus were intact, still hanging on the belt. He smiled, the damage was just for the motorcycle and him...
It was me, completely repaired in the mean time. So is the motorcycle BTW.
I would highly recommend it, but I think grindergear doesn't exist any longer. The downside was that it was quite expensive ($ 45 + sending to Europe), but I really wanted it, so I bought it. € 60 wasn't too much to protect my mistress.
I saw the same case for sale with another name a couple of weeks ago. I believe it was Xtremegear ot X-treme gear or something alike. The name of the case was still Basecamp.
Grinder-gear had three different cases : "scout" "basecamp" "???".
Chero.

Don't know if this is valid, but check here: http://www.bagpeddler.com/pda-gg.shtml (http://www.bagpeddler.com/pda-gg.shtml)
BTW: glad to hear you and the bike are doing well.
Thanks for the posting. It's allowed me to begin double-checking the durability of my older Psion case.
Uh oh. Just noticed that clicking on the cases leads to .....NOTHING! The PDA cases may no longer be available, as per Chero.
Darn! Should-a listened.
