Title: ARM or Intel.. which is it
Post by: Anonymous on January 20, 2004, 10:52:10 am: I just got one of those amazon 5600 closeout deals and it says its got an Intel pxa250 but I read on this group many references to ARM processors. Could someone give me a brief explaination

Is the Intel an ARM clone or did Sharp switch cpu at some point in the model line?

I\'m not too sure about this, so somebody correct me if i\'m wrong, but I think the PXA250 is an ARM compatible chip.

Post by: KwaiFeh on January 20, 2004, 11:05:02 am: I forgot to add, i thought i heard people say in the forum that the latest batches of 5600\'s came with PXA255, because intel stopped making the PXA250 a while back. Other companies like Dell made the upgrade with it\'s X5.

But I was just curious about Intel making an ARM compatible cpu. Its been a while since I followed the hardware scene and thats quite a shock really (o;

The ARM chip used in the 5500 was the StrongARM. This CPU was developed by DEC. with an instruction set licensed from ARM. When Dec merged with Comapaq, Intel bought DEC\'s semiconductor unit (including the StrongARM). Subsequently Intel upgraded the StrongARM line, and renamed it to XScale.

Post by: Anonymous on January 21, 2004, 10:39:52 am: The chip in the 5500 (and most likely the 5600) are Intel Strongarm CPUs. Intel bought Strongarm from DEC a while back.
