I am going to buy a Sharp Zaurus C1000, and before I get it I have a few questions about it.
Will it be able to do the following?
1) Play DivX (or comparable MPEG4) at 640x480.
2) Use USB host to access a laptop hard drive in an external enclosure, and play a movie off of it.
3) Power a laptop hard drive (no? I did not think so, is there any battery pack for powering USB stuff?)
4) Compile and run basic console C programs (With GCC, or GCC based compiler?).
5) Cook my breakfast.
6) Edit text documents using a USB keyboard (possibly with port replicator)
7) Go on wireless internet (802.11b, whats a good CF wireless card?)
I realize I will have to wait for third party ROMs for some of this functionality.
Also, is there any store that imports the C1000 that does not require PayPal some third party?
(The only one that I have found is streamlinecpus.com)

I have read reports that you need to have them drive powerd, but then again I have read the opposite.

With the right software yes

hmm might be a bit tough, maybe control your stove to cook breakfast (picturing Back to the future )

Keyboards work just fine with it

1) Not at 640x480. I make my movies at 320x240 29fps, the best I've heard of is ~570x300 or so.
2) Yes. I've got a battery powered external 40gb HD that works beautifully. I've also got a USB CD-RW, from which I've both read and written cds.
3) Sorry, but no. Most anything more power-hungry than a CF type2 Microdrive is going to need external power.
4) Sure. There are even dev tools for doing GUI programming available. You've also got your choice of various Java's and scripting languages as well. (Including LAMP - Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)
5) Depends on how raw you take your eggs.
6) Yes. I've got a USB Mouse, Keyboard, and various external USB drives all hooked up through a hub.
7) Lots of different wireless cards work. I use a linksys WCF-12

How'd you do that? Like kahm, I've only gotten 320x240. But they play beautifully at 29.97 fps.
I've been using PSPVideo9 to do the encoding, although I'm sure there are other fine pgms out there. Thsi one seems to be the most trouble-free for me.

PSPvideo9? Hmm. I'm definitely interested in that now. Making videos that will play on both my PSP AND my Zaurus would be *very* high on my to-do list.

It works well, really. Sony's video naming convention, which PSPVideo9 uses, is a bit of a downer though. I usually just end up renaming the file to something more recognizable, like the actual show/movie name.

I think that if you enable overclock at 624Mhz, put in a WLAN card, plug in the charger and start playing DivX movies from an NFS mount over WLAN connection then yes, you might just get to the temperature required to cook some scrambled eggs..

I've been using PSPVideo9 to do the encoding, although I'm sure there are other fine pgms out there. Thsi one seems to be the most trouble-free for me.

Don't forget using remote desktop to access your file server and remode desktop from there to your desktop PC and then remote desktop into your wife's desktop PC where you finally launch a game of Tetris!

I have a question about wireless CF card compatibility, I am looking for a 802.11b Compact Flash card, and I have found a few options, all with seemingly major drawbacks.. Here is what I found..
Belkin's model is large and blocks the stylus port, drains battery and short range.
The D-Link DCF-660W is good but drains battery quickly and lasts only a few months.
The Linksys (WCF-12) is good but drains battery quickly and lasts only a few months.
Socket's Low Power CF Card "WL6004-322" looks great except I saw quite a few reports saying that it was incompatible with Zaurii.
The Buffalo looked good except I saw a few reports of poor range, and it was expensive.
Are any of these claims true? I guess I show not belive everything that I read. I have done enough researching to rule out everything.... (I am leaning to the WCF-12..)
It also looks like the C1000 can't cook eggs, I guess I am stuck with Pop Tarts...

I have the Ambicom WL1100C-CF. Works well with my 3000.

I've got a linksys WCF12 that I've been using for ~2 years with my Zaurii without issues.

I use the Buffalo Air Station WL12-CF-S11, I can't comment on cost because it came with my C3000 which I purchased used.
BUT range is good, in fact better than the truemobile card in my Dell laptop.

I second that my wcf12 is just as stable and reliable as kahm's

The Linksys (WCF-12) is good but drains battery quickly and lasts only a few months.
My WCF-12 has lasted ~ 10 months, and remains in good shape.
Battery life on a C760 with BL-08 is approximately 2h45m

I use Windows Media Encoder to make mpeg4 at setting 352x288 and 60fps.
It can play smoothly in the zaurus build-in movie player.

I DLed PSPVideo9 and encoded the files but they don´t work. what extension do you change them to? *.avi?
Also, what settings do you use? Thank you!

I left the extension at .mp4. Works fine in Kino2.
I've been using 368x208/29.97fps/1500kbps/128kbps for all my 16x9 ratio shows, otherwise it's straight 320x240 for 4x3 ratio.
