I added a section explaining this to the WIKI and if you want to get technical then there's more in an artical on 3000 device specifics (it gives background on flash based models too).
Maybe we should start password protecting the ZIP files carrying the ROMs and add the password into the readme file so we can be sure people see this
Examples of major things that won't work in Cacko3K if you don't do this.
1. KeyHelper/Cyrillic Input keymapper - Reason New applets not presented in user partition.
2. Network tools such as nslookup, dig, whois etc. - Reason no links in user partition.
3. Memory applet - Reason no links in user partition.
4. Bluez - Reason no links in user partition.
5. ssh - ....
6. cdr-tools - ....
7. squashfs - ....
Additionally the Sharp ROM has stuff in the user partition that has been removed from the Cacko3K ROM (japanese input etc.) this results in a mess of 'broken links' in the ROM.
Finally I'm sure there would be with many subtly broken bits I'm sure... basically the result is unpredictable so please erase the device if the release notes say so.

Andy

Andy,
It may sound silly, but I really think it would help make sure that people follow that last step if you make it step 5 with a number.
My eyes would have noticed it easier that way...subtle thing but think it would help as I look at ReadMe file again.

Fair enough, actually it will be scripted into the udpater.sh soon.
