that is available to the general public for the C1K? I know that Dynamism protects theirs, but are there others, besides Conics and Trisoft that might be available and perhaps converts more than the others?
It appears the wizards on this site are a ways away from completing a Cacko or OZ ROM for my soon-to-be-arriving C1000, and since I can't read Japanese, and don't have the patience of Job I'm going to need to at least convert the Sharp ROM to English in the meantime. If anyone has had a great experience with any of the translations, including Conics and Trisoft I'd sure appreciate hearing about it.

I got my 1000 from [a href=\"http://www.streamlinecpus.com]streamline[/url] and it came completely converted (at least I haven't found any lingering japanese characters yet). I know streamline is partnered with trisoft and both have english converted roms available for download, I just don't know the difference between the two.

Actually I can help you on this one Offroadgeek. As far as the translation differences between us and TRIsoft there isn't a huge one. We have our logo imprinted on the startup screen and our time localisation is default set to Eastern time other than that we do our translations the same. This way all warranty claims can be done by us or TRIsoft on each others products to sometimes save time getting the units back to the customers depending on where they are located.

Streamline do you make your conversion package/script available to non-customers? I traded my 6K for a C1K from a member of of this site. I haven't received it yet and I didn't think to ask him what state it is in as far as the OS is concerned. And from what I've read it appears that some of the conversions do leave some of the Japanese chars untranslated or turns them into square boxes, which I'd like to avoid. I'll probably upgrade to either Cacko or OZ at some point in the future but in the meantime I will need to use my Z.

The localisation we do is not given out for obvious reasons however we do offer the restore files in our download section to all Users. One thing about this forum however is that any questions you have can be answered here we have a lot of talented Z users here and some stubborn ones hehe. If we can help you we always offer support to Z users just shoot us out a mail. Hope this helps.

I agree. I've been a member of this site since last year and couldn't begin to count the number of times I received valuable assistance from others here. Hopefully someday I'll be able to pay some of that back, but it seems that just when I become proficient with my latest device I end up selling it to buy my next one.
I may visit your site to take a look at your downloads if the conversions I've been pointed to don't work out. Thanks for the tip.

"Translate to English" is a wrong term, actually. Qtopia by default is in English. Sharp had to translate it into Japanese.
You want to 'untranslate' it. Which basically means installing the language package, and selecting 'English', and installing an English input method.
I did notice that Sharp has created their own videoplayer which happens to be in Japanese by default, as is the Japanese input methods they use.

The C1k I shipped you is using Sharp 1.01jp - all in Japanese.
Stubear's translation script makes the Z perfectly usable in English - there is actually very little Japanese left.

Excellent kahm. Thanks for the tip! If there is anything I can do to assist those of you who are hard at work on the alternative ROMs for the C1K please ask. I'd be happy to pitch in in some way.

I'm in a similar situation. I just purchased my C1000 and I'm pretty sure it won't come with the english conversion.
I've seen a link to the conics site with english conversion instructions and the one for Stuart Bouyer's script, but both of these are specifically for earlier versions of the C series, 860 and earlier. I know the devices are similar, but which is the best one to use, i.e. least likely to cause disaster.
Also, I read about some kind of internal conversion that comes with the C3000. A simple command you can run as superuser to switch between English and the hybrid. Does the C1000 have similar functionality? I've looked but I haven't seen it.

I used the trisoft conversion and am very happy with it. In addition to providing the English conversion (or unconversion as someone wisely pointed out), it also includes the KA/pi and KO/pi address and calendar apps. They have been a challenge to use but they seem to be better and more robust than the ones Sharp includes in their ROM.
I can't speak to the ability of converting back and forth on the fly, but others might be able to.
