"The shipment of 3.4 million units is a 25 percent increase over the total number of shipments worldwide in the first quarter of 2004. The average selling price of a unit also increased 15 percent to $406."

"... The desire for wireless e-mail access fueled a 55 percent increase in shipments for PDAs containing WLAN or cellular capabilities, according to Gartner."

From the same article comes a troublesome note for Zaurus fans though. Japan posted a 21.3% drop in PDA shipments in the same quarter.

this only confirms that the traditional pda is dying.  RIM is the main reason for the increase in sales (within that report).  It is not considered a traditional pda, but a possible look into the future of PDAs.

My 10 ¢ on the issue : the next zaurus will be released with hardware wireless, which will only work in Japan through some exclusive partnership with a cellphone company (can you say Tréo ?)

It will just like a blackberry - except we'll all lament we can't use it outside japan.

The only problem being that there are three different major and fiercely competitive cellular providers. Chances are that if they're going to do anything with cellular, it will be a partnership that involves the CF slot, just like they have now.  (The 860, at the very least, had a cheap plan from one of the providers)
