Title: Sl-c3000 And 1gb Storage Cards
Post by: Jacknife on May 11, 2005, 05:01:03 am
I've seen questions about CF versus SD storage for other Zaurii models, and it seems that CF is the way to go if you're planning on  flashing the ROM.  I wanted to check if the SL-C3000 also has the limitation of only being flashable via CF cards.

A local store has a 1Gb SD card listed at the same price as a 1Gb CF card.   I already have a CF WiFi card, so I'd like to get the SD card.  However I don't want to get the SD card if it can't be used for flashing.

The Clamshell models (Cxx0, and Cx000) can flash from either SD or CF. You should be okay with the 1gb SD card.

It seems logical to get 1gb sd and leave the cf slot for wifi and other gear, but flashing from sd is dependant on the rom.  The requirements for flashing a rom isn't usually big (I think the most is a 256mb card) so why not just buy a much cheaper cf card as well as a 1gb sd?

For flashing you only need a 256mb card (most roms are <50mb, but a nand backup is >128mb).  So I would get a 1gb SD card and grab a cheap 256mb CF card (online or in a store).  That way you can keep your SD card in always, and just use the CF card when/if you need to flash.

great minds think alike.

Another reason to go the suggested route is that flashing roms requires fat16 file systems.  With a cheap 256mb cf, you can format the sd card to ext2 which adds more functionality to a linux device (symlinks and permissions)

Be careful formatting an SD (or CF) card to ext2, it gives the card automounter fits.  The install applications applet wouldn't work, clicking 'eject card' wouldn't work, 'umount' as root wouldn't work.  Reformatting the SD card as FAT16 fixed that.  I tried it with 2 different cards on both a C1000 and C3000.

Hmmmm I wonder if that is new because I do not recall having those issues with any of my Zs.

Thanks for the advice, and words of warning...

I was thinking that a 1Gb card would be large enough to hold the NAND backup, ROM image, and a library of my favorite ipks.  However I didn't know that a FAT16 file system was required for the flashing process - thanks for (re)stating that.

Would anyone see any harm in creating a 256Mb FAT16 partition on the card? I wouldn't think that this would be a problem, but I don't know if the flashing process is resilient enough to recognize the partition. (I'm still a flash-virgin.)

I think that I'll probably go ahead and get the SD card at this point.  If the flash process doesn't recognized multi-partitioned cards, then I'll probably get a 256Mb CF just for flashing.

Another thing to watch out for, partitioning cards does work, but Windows doesn't see the second partition.  Also, the stock fdisk Has Issues which prevent proper partitioning.   There's an sfdisk that work properly.

Good to know, thanks!  I think I'll just get a 256Mb CF for flashing, and my hold off on the 1Gb card for now.

Thanks again, everyone - you've probably saved me a lot of frustration.

Make sure that its an SD not an MMC card (MMC can not be used for flashing).

Been there done that re-flashed my Zaurus.
