Hi All,
I'd love to throw OZ at my new C1000, I always loved OZ's look and feel more than my bog standard Sharp Rom.
BUT...
The hancom apps never easily or that successfully installed.
Is that still the case?
Are there decent alternatives these days?
Thanks!
Owen

abi word and gnumeric should be available for gpe, I would think
-
I know I've not used GPE in quite some time, but when I did last attempt to use it on my old 5500, I found it less useable for day to day use than OPIE. It still had the feel of a work in progress, whereas OPIE didn't have that feeling.
Things may have changed rapidly in the last 6 months since I've owned a Zaurus.
-
my bief experience with 3.5.3 gpe was better than 3.5.2.
minimo had serious issues--had to go to dillo (no ssl but worked great) still a work in progress imho... but progress has deinitely been made. It might do what you want tis time

Sounds fab, love how fast things are improving on this platform, one of the reasons I decided to return to it. :-)
It it possible to build a lightweight office suite for embedded platforms like this?
I know the developers have more to do just getting the OS and GUI's working and I'm beyond grateful for that, so I won't say more than that I hope they get to a stage were additional projects like an Open Embedded Office could become a reality.
In the meantime, if I can get away with using OZ and the Hancom apps, I will, but I don't think they'll work with OZ, they never did particularly well in the past with OZ.

i've thought for a long time that siag office should be compiled for oz .
I don't know that io'm up to it. If you are, though....

I am hoping to set up a build environment so I can try my hand compiling for OZ. Is there any good howtos on the subject?
-
LOL, I wish I had the skill, I guess I need a dummies guide to OE/OZ :-)
-
I've had abiword working without any problems on my 5600 with OZ/GPE 3.5.3. It's a bit difficult with the small screen... but it's usable. It would make a very nice word processor with the C1000 screen size!

the oz feed has opie-write and opie-sheet, which aren't bad.
AFAIK gpe hasn't yet been built for the 1000
I got pocketworkstation setup on a 1gb sd card (thanks to help from jh) and installed abiword and gnumeric. both work just fine... a bit slower than the opie apps, but still it's nice to have them installed.
I haven't tried to install the hancom apps as I've always found them useless anyway

They are seriously poor compared to full versions, yet about the same as the pocket PC versions that I've admittedly only used briefly.
I think I'm going to be more an OPIE than GPE user on my C1000.
I know there is a commercial word processor out there that runs on the Zaurus, I forget the name at this very second (is it TextMaker or something like that?). However, I've just spent £460 on the Zaurus, my wallet is feeling a little too pained to shell out more money
The main thing I use is a spreadsheet, I'm a spreadsheet-aholic.
If there is a decent spreadsheet that I can use on OPIE (the OPIE-Sheet program doesn't really count am afraid) then I'll be a happy bunny.
It's just weird that the hancom apps won't install, surely there is a way to tweak OZ so they can?
-
don'y waste your money with TextMaker, it doesn't work under opie. I downloaded the ipk demo file from their website, installed it without any problem, but i couldn't launch it because it has not been compiled for OZ...
A GOOD word processor is really what we need under opie. Opie-sheet is much too limited, and anyway Hancom sucks... For now, the best solution seems to be Pocketworkstation. GPE is getting better and better each version, but the OpenZaurus 3.5.3 GPE image is still to bugged for a daily use (espacially the bug that prevent you from logging in...). The next one will certainly be perfect for word processing, and i'm sure lots of differents desktop manager progs will soon be ported to GPE, so you may find something that will make you confortable with it.

Hey, (good ?) news !!
TextMaker Does work under opie, with sharp-compat-libs. At least so does the demo ipk availiable at their download page.
The point is that it crashes sometimes, for exemple when i try the "Info and ordering" tab. This makes i'm not sure it's a good idea to buy this prog : what if we can't enter the registration code ?
I was a beta tester so i still have my old registration code, but i erased the beta ipk so i can't test this.
Does someone still have this ipk fil (rev 400, if i remember well) ?

With some small improvements, I also think these would also be adequate for anything that someone would do on a mobile device. As it stands, opie-write is very usable. . . output to HTML is a bit difficult to deal with sometimes, but I suppose it's the easiest to handle (compared to RTF and DOC).
On the other hand, I feel that opie-sheet is pretty sophisticated for a free spreadsheet on a niche platform. On the other hand, in the end it's usability suffers because you can't take the files anywhere else.
I'd like to see both of these programs support OASIS Open Document format. . . then files could simply be swapped back and forth with OpenOffice.
-
Is it possible to get Open Office on the Zaurus?
-
Sure. It would need someone to add it and its dependencies to OE and then it'll be in the next feed release.
-
I think OE with OOo would be a killer combo.
No other hand held OS could compete.
