I'm currently doing a search and going through the posts that have come up, but if anyone can point me at instructions on how to do a NAND backup on a C1000 I'd appreciate it, be they on here or links on another site.
I'm desperate to reflash my Zaurus, but want to back it up before I do!
Thanks

here you go

includes link to actual nand backup

I've spotted that in my searches, but my only concern with that is that it's a backup of a ROM that's shipped by another company. I'd rather backup the ROM that was shipped by ShirtPocket, because I've had a play with it now and am pretty happy with it. I might not like this other ROM. The conversion may be different. etc.
Thanks though for the link - always good to have a backup plan :-)

omro,
simply get the SL-C1000 manual on the same page.
There's the NAND-Backup/Restore procedure explained.
So you could make a NAND-Backup of the shipped
version.

I brought my SL-C3000 fom Shirtpocket, but I would not again. The support has been no existant. Although I paid a premium buying though Shirtpocket to get support in the end I also had to use Trisoft's NAND back-up.
(No reply to emails, phone calls - unless you are a new buyer......)
I hope other forum reading and potential Zaurus owners take this in account when purchasing.

Hi Marc,
I've just looked at your manual and it's way better than the manual I got through shirtpocket.
Thanks!

I'm using the TriSoft manual instructions on how to create a NAND backup, but the instructions to get to the Service Menu don't seem to work. I've tried both versions (including removing the battery completely for 30+ seconds). Neither method seems to work.
Any hints?

mtnkill,
the trick is, that the Zaurus needs to be without any
power when you begin. This means extracting the
battery and pull the AC adaptor.
Also you need to press "D"+"M" and _hold_ it while
you plug AC or put the battery in and flip the battery
switch. The Zaurus must "see" the D+M keys in the
moment when he's getting power.

Just to confirm, because I've been nervous to try this.
All I need for a NAND backup is a blank CF card, formatted as?
And does this backup EVERYTHING? i.e. if I restore from this NAND backup will I get the Z back exactly as it was, every file, colour, setting, piece of data in the PIM etc...
-
And does this backup EVERYTHING
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=84317\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
omro,
yes, it does
That's the reason, why a NAND backup is so
awful big. It's a simple 1:1 image of the whole
NAND memory. So it doesn't care about files etc.
See it as a virtual snapshot of your Zaurus.

So, it's effectively a "ghost" image of your C1000?

omro,
the simple answer is : YES

and the format for the card is FAT16
-
that's just FAT format when win2k formats the card?
I've never formatted a flash card like that as the file names seem to be weird.
-
Oh, and how long should a NAND backup take?

Yeah, I got it to work finally. It must have been simply my digital dexterity. I had been taking the battery out, then holding D+M and putting it back in and flipping the switch. This time, I took the battery out, held D+M, and simply connected my power cord, and the Service Menu came right up. The battery wasn't involved in any fashion. I tested again, and was finally able to do it with just the battery.
Thanks!!

SD (and CF) cards come FAT16 formatted from the store. So you just need to erase, or move, all it's content. Check the format to see if it's FAT16 actually before formatting from win2k.
Not sure about it but I'd say it will format it FAT32.

Can't speak about the C1000/C3000, but as regards the C860 this is really not the case. I find it a LOT easier to just tell Qtopia to reboot the system then hold the D+M (or D+B, etc) keys after the YES/NO dialog box while the system restarts. Works fine and MUCH easier than pulling the battery, flipping the switch & all that while trying to hold down several keys at the same time.
-
Bob,
you're absolutely right, but this requires a running system.
The problem is, that most users need the diag mode because
the Zaurus seems to be dead or is not booting correctly.
So we found it easier to describe only one option for entering
the diag that also works with units that not boot / run properly.

For my C1000 it seemed to be:
1. Plug the Zaurus into the mains.
2. Set the battery switch to open.
3. Remove the battery cover.
4. Hold down D and M and press the hard reset button at the same time.
5. Service menu appears.
And then was able to perform a NAND backup, restore from another NAND backup and then restored to my origanl NAND backup.
Happy now.

What is the freeSpace needed in my SD Card to backup C3000's NAND? I am using 1GB SD Card and it always said not enough space. Please advice.
-
Don't do that. Not in c3000. (as I've read in some posts, unless you've got a BIG CF/SD card and a lot of time. )
It's got a 4GB HDD.
[edit]
It is actually not that easy.
Take a look to this great Trisoft manual (http://www.trisoft.de/pdf/c3000qse.pdf), for detailed info.
