Title: Pims Data
Post by: omro on May 14, 2005, 06:13:16 pm
Hi All,

I'm currently playing with the Sharp ROM on my Zaurus and I'm a little hesitant about using the PIM apps.

My fear is this. If I put a lot of addresses into the PIMs and then decide to go down the OZ route, won't I just lose the data? Is there a way to export the data and then reimport it into the OZ PIM (are they better or worse than the standard Qtopia ones? - separate question I know).

Or should I be using the Kde-PIM/PI that I've seen? If I use that, how do I back up the data or transfer it to another PIM should I need to?

I love the fact that the Zaurus offers you the chance to make choices like this. I just need to make sure I'm making the right one for me, one that doesn't involve a lot of time wasted.

Thanks!!

You can copy your data to SD/CF card. After you install OpenZaurus, you can install KDE-PIM/PI and import your address data. If you want check the import option, you can install KdePIM/PI on Sharp ROM and test the process.

Can I export the data inserted into the Sharp ROM PIM Apps to a spreadsheet or CSV and insert those into any other PIM I want?

- KDE PIM/pi does all that stuff.  You're not liable to find a better PIM suite for the Z, anyway.  I'd install it on your Sharp ROM, sync to DTM (it does that), then copy the PIM data files (one each for agent, addr, pwd) where-ever you're like.  Later, with whatever ROM/system you happen to be using, you can just copy them data back, launch the PIM app(s), and *poof*, back in business.  Just as easy as it aughtta be, it is.

The screenshots for KDE PIM/pi make it look pretty overly colourful, not a big fan of the KDE Pim look  (dare I say unprofessional?) and perhap suited for a screen bigger than the Zaurus.

I would agree. The interface might work well on devices with VGA resolution but seems way over-the-top for an SL5500.

I tried OZ and Opie but found it too buggy for my liking. I am sure the developers have a lot of fun working on it but I find it hard to believe their primary focus is on providing a stable environment for end users.

I am pretty content using Sharp's 3.13 ROM and keeping half an eye on the new Qtopia ROM in case that turns out to be viable alternative.
