When I try to use my socket wifi card in my 5600 it locks up on me until I remove the card from the unit. Reboots don\'t help. In fact, if I reboot while the card is installed, it locks up on reboot.
I am using the Sharp 1.21 ROM. I hear the 1.32 ROM can fix my problem, but the Sharp website says the 1.32 ROM should only be flashed to a 1.00 ROM 5600.
Any help?
Is it ok to just flash the 1.32 ROM anyway? This unit is new (just got it 3 days ago).

Just wondering, what is the output of the command \'cat /proc/cpuinfo\'?
-
It says it has the PXA250 processor

Ignore their website, I updated mine from 1.21 to 1.32 without a hitch.
I\'m probably going to try the Zynergy ROM update tonight though as it adds some missing things.
Now I need to find a reasonably priced WiFi card for my SL-5600, any suggestions?

I have a 5600 (with the 250) and put on the new sharp rom with no problems. I used an Amibicom wifi card with no problems. Slipped it in and it was recognized. I have heard the Socket is the most efficient with power use. Not sure where the Amibicom stands on power use.
-
Thanks guys.
I already went ahead and flashed it this past weekend. I figured that had to be old. and worst case I could just refomat the user area to make it clean.
As far as the wifi card, this socket wifi card I am using now is assume. The Ambicom uses more power than the Socket (something like 100mA vs. 20mA). That being said. the Ambicom is cheaper and can be had at your local office max. Plus, I believe the Ambicom driver supports WEP, while the Socket driver doesn\'t. Not sure about range comparisons.
-
I guess I should have said that I had to install the Symbol/Socket driver for it to work. But now it works like a champ.
-
Here is some data on some of the wifi cards I researched when I bought mine recently. All of the data is per the respective manufacturers website.
Card Idle Power Transmit Power Receive Power
Netgear MA701 80 350 250
Socket WL6000-320 20 280 170
SMC SMC2642W 100 320 250
Ambicom WL1100C-CF 100 370 250
-
Thanks for the recommendations...
I picked up a Socket WL6000 on eBay for $30 and free shipping.
FWIW, Socket says this card is end of life and who knows if the
next one will still work.
Also bought an Ambicom BT2000-CF for $39 on eBay, hopefully
it is the right version...

I\'m using SL-5600 with original sharp rom (1.3.2) and going to use
symbol wireless card. Is it true that symbol/socket doesn\'t support
WEP? I can\'t even think about running my home wireless network
without WEP.
-
Just another data point, I\'m using a 5600, original ROM, with a Netgear MA-701 wifi card. It works just fine.
w4lna: Please let me know if you have any success with the Ambicom bluetooth card. It\'s the best deal around right now, but so far I haven\'t heard from anyone who got it working.
-
abcdef,
Just a clarification - Symbol/Socket supports WEP, however the zaurus driver does not. If WEP is important to you, then I would consider the Ambicom. I hear that is a very good card.

I seem to be having a little luck with the Spectrum24 card, even though I installed the old 2.4.6 kernel drivers. It is turning the card on and off but I haven\'t managed to establish a connection yet, but I still have a few things to change on the router. The card was made by Symbol instead of Socket so it wasn\'t quite what I was expecting. Its card info does match one of the entries in spectrum.conf.
I\'ve not made any progress with the Ambicom yet other than the LED is blinking when I insert the card. dmesg was reporting a 16C450 UART when it was plugged in, and after I installed the bluez driver and csr script, it is showing up as something like a 16C895/? instead.

Total newbie here, just got my 5600 yesterday. I\'ve been reading all the posts on WiFi cards, and bought the Socket Low Power CF card. Now, I\'ve updated the ROM to 1.32 and I can\'t get the 5600 to recognize the card at all. I\'ve tried the driver that\'s linked on the Socket website, and I\'ve tried the Z. Anynergy ROM. Any ideas what I\'m missing?
Sorry to post such an overly discussed question, but I\'ve the threads and ideas I\'ve tried running haven\'t worked. I\'m afraid it might be a bad card, but I don\'t know how to check that.
Thank you for the help.

I got my Symbol card working last night with the Spectrum driver from:
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/ (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/)
Even though it was the 2.4.6 kernel, it seems to work anyway. I have updated to the \"special\" kernel too. WEP didn\'t seem to work, but I surfed the net on my neighbor\'s unsecured access point for an hour. Pretty good card considering the distance (200-300 ft) and the battery level hadn\'t dropped off of full after an hour of use.

That\'s the location of the kernel I tried to install. I also tried to install the spectrum_0.3.4-2_arm.ipk that\'s available on that site.

I tested the card that a coworker uses, also a Socket, and it works perfectly in my 5600. My card does not work on his 5500, so it looks like I have a bad card. I will be heading to the electronics store after work today to return this one and get a new one.
Thank you for the help.

I got symbol card yesterday. It\'s strange that everybody has different experience even
though they used the same hardware and software. I\'m using sl5600 with original sharp
rom (1.32). I just plug the card and set up SSID and WEP key, then it started to work
with no problem. Entering 128K WEP key took some time but other than that, just few
clicking on the screen made it work. I\'m trying to have kismet work now.
I\'m wondering if my sharp rom has wireless extension or not. Is there any way to
figure it out? Do I need to install libcap package?
Thanks.

The install probably installed the drivers into a new 2.4.6 kernel directory eventhough you are running 2.4.18. Try moving the 4 files (hermes.o, orinoco.o, orinoco_cs.o, spectrum_cs.o) under /lib/modules/2.4.6.???/kernel/drivers/net/wireless to the same folder structure under /lib/modules/2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix. If this does not make sense, poke around using file manager and it should make sense.
-
Prun, I\'ll poke around with that. Thanks for the suggestion. So much new stuff to learn. I took the defective card back to the store and got a new one. Once I plugged it in the 5600 recognized it and I had no problems getting onto the available network.

This is the driver that I\'m using. It\'s available at the MyZaurus site, but you can only find it with Google. Sharp\'s web sites suck...
WEP is definitely not working for me though.

This is interesting. With a decent file manager, look under the /lib/modules and /lib/modules.rom heirarchy and see if you can find any files like the following:
hermes.o
orinoco.o
orinoco_cs.o
spectrum_cs.o
I had installed the Zynergy ROM for a brief time before restoring the Sharp ROM. I had to manually re-install some things because not everything in the factory configuration came back. I may have missed the wireless drivers.

The install that I did moved them there, but they work anyway. I need to read up on how and where Linux decides to load modules from. This is *not* like FreeBSD.

I couldn\'t find any of those files. I even tried \"find\" utility but there\'s no
such files. I could only find prism2_cs.o file under /lib/modules/.../pcmcia.
It\'s strange to me, too. But it works with symbol card with WEP enabled.
Here is the output from \'cardctrl ident\'
$ /sbin/cardctl ident
Socket 0:
product info: \"Symbol\", \"Spectrum24 LA4100 Series WLAN PC card\", \"1.00\"
manfid: 0x026c, 0x0001
function: 6 (network)
Socket 1:
no product info available
Regards.

I moved the files to my SD card and it still works as well. Using \'cat /proc/modules\' doesn\'t seem to turn up anything other than the bluetooth drivers, so possibly it\'s compiled in the kernel instead. The wireless utilities are available (see \'ls /sbin/iw*\") though they do complain of being version 13 when the kernel is version 14 or vica versa. I can\'t get WEP to work at all though...

It appears to be compiled into the \"standard preemptive kernel\" that I have installed.
Dmesg gives the following:
orinoco.c 0.14beta1 (David Gibson <hermes@gibson.dropbear.id.au> and others)
orinoco_cs.c 0.14beta1 (David Gibson (hermes@gibson.dropbear.id.au> and others)
spectrum_cs.c 0.4.2 (Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org> and others)
When I uninstalled the Spectrum 0.3.4.2 driver, it removed spectrum and spectrum.conf from /etc/pcmcia. Does anyone know if they still need to be there?

I\'ve largely been the same path as you from ROM 1.21 to 1.32 to Zynergy and back again. Somewhere along the way I may have lost some of the original configuration, but all is not lost. Go back to Sharp\'s ROM 1.32 if you haven\'t already. I haven\'t tried the original kernel though some reported it working without WEP. Load the \'standard preemptive kernel\' that is here:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...download&sid=53 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=53)
If you don\'t have spectrum and spectrum.conf files in /etc/pcmcia, you need to get them, either by unpacking from the spectrum driver ipk (aka tgz) file or install the driver, copy those 2 files to a safe place, then uninstall the driver, and copy them back. Reboot the Zaurus, then use the Network app to establish your network profile. You should have a working Symbol card (LA-4137) and WEP active.
If you want to find out if your existing kernel already has the drivers for the card, use the \'dmesg\' command and search for references to orinoco and spectrum. The standard preemptive kernel (1.2) seems to have them compiled into the kernel instead of a loadable module. It won\'t work without the 2 spectrum files in /etc/pcmcia though.

I have not had any luck at all with my Socket 6004 low-pwer cf wifi and Zaurus 5600 (Rom 1.32)... The lights have never come on. I\'ve configured spectrum.conf accordingly, and cardctl status say\'s its ready.
dmesg shows the orinoco drivers loaded, no errors.
Does anyone know if changing the scheme via \"cardctl scheme\" would turn on/off the lights? anything to help me out?

No spectrum driver?
In spectrum.conf, I have:
device \"spectrum_cs\"
# class \"network\"module \"hermes\", \"orinoco\", \"spectrum_cs\"
class \"spectrum\"modules \"hermes\", \"orinoco\", \"spectrum_cs\"
card \"LA4100 Spectrum24 CF WLAN Card\"
manfid 0x026c, 0x0001
bind \"spectrum_cs\"
card \"Socket Communications CF+LP WLAN Card\"
manfid 0x0104, 0x0001
bind \"spectrum_cs\"
and in spectrum, I have:
#!/bin/sh
#
export WIRELESS_USE=$0
./network $*
exit $?
cardctl scheme CardResume
will turn on my lights, this will turn them off:
cardctl scheme Suspend
You might want to try the other kernel....

The Socket 6004 is a very new card. From what i have heard here people have been having good luck with the 6000 but no word on the 6004.
Im sure a lot of people would be interested in knowing if new card works with the Z. Let us know what happens...

NOTE: Yes this post was edited, well re-written really Due to the fact the first one made no sense... Thats what I get for posting at work

Socket has released a new version of the 6004 low-pwer cf wifi card. When you say the \"lights\" have never come on that makes me think you have the new version of the card, as the old version has only one light. Also from the socket site: \"The driver/utility software for the older version is NOT compatible with the newer version\".
Let us know if your card has two lights on it. It would be interesting to see if new card work with the Z.

6004 is the new version, look at this:

yes my card is the new one with two lights. Maybe someone can compile a sharp-based kernel for it using the newest Orinoco driver?
http://savannah.nongnu.org/cvs/?group=orinoco (http://savannah.nongnu.org/cvs/?group=orinoco)

I\'m in the market for a wifi card and the Socket looks like it\'s the best bet. The question is 6000 or 6004? I\'m running a Linux partition on my desktop machine, so compiling a custom kernel doable. If all it really takes is compiling a kernel with the newest Orinoco drivers, then I\'ll grab the new one. Are the Orinoco drivers the only thing that needs to be changed or would I need to write new software? Any thoughts to steer me the right way?
Thanks for the help
