Title: Dos / Hp200lx Emulation On C3000?
Post by: daniel3000 on May 18, 2005, 04:55:30 am
Hello,

I have read some posts about running Bochs, but with failing 200LX emulation attempts.

Any new progress here? I'd like to be able to use my 200LX applications on the Zaurus (PAL programs, maybe using Palrun under a DOS emulation).

The links to the Bochs ipk and disk images are also dead on

Thanks

I tried for months & months to get CPACK to run on the C860. Used every emulator & OS that I could get. Even when it did run (not very often) it never ran well enough to really USE (like no F-keys fir ibe example).

Since CPACK is the only way that I know to run 200LX native apps even under DOS, this was very discouraging, to say the least.

I finally sent my best "dead" HP200LX back to Thaddeus for repair & bought a CF card to PCMCIA adapter. I use the 200LX for what it does better than the C860 & share the data on a Kodak 32 Mb CF card (the biggest that the 200LX would handle without choking).

If you hear of any real world, WORKING way to run HP200LX apps on the Z, I would really like to hear about the details.

In order to run PAL applications like Post/LX, PE, MM/LX etc., you do not need the CPack, they can also be run under simpler emulators such as Palrun, PalmPC, INT5F etc. Maybe we should try it again with this kind of emulators.

Which DOS emulators did you try?

If there is an open source DOS emulator, we could try to modify it with the help of the creators of PALRUN (Stefan Peichl, Andreas Garzotto and, I think, Harry Konstas) to optimize it for PAL applicatoins.
Alternatively, a Linux port of the PAL libraries would help a lot. PAL applicatoins could be compiled for the Zaurus directly 8-) But I guess this would be a huge project. PAL/QT for example ;-)

Many people of the HP LX scene are looking for a successor for the 200LX but didn't find one yet. With such an emulator, the C1000 or C3000 could be a good candidate. I myself am trying to find ways to be as productive with the C3000 as I was so far with the 200LX. No chance so far. But I'll keep investigating and maybe developing.

A lot of what we tried can be found in threads like:

I'll dig out my old notes & give you more details about my own attempts. My main objective was to be able to use my 200LX database files without major conversion hassles & headaches. Portabase is good but it still isn't as user friendly and customizable as the old 200LX engine (IMHO).

Thanks, have read most of the threads.
It sounds like you had quite good success with a Bochs binary, but the links in your posting don't work anymore.

Could you send the files to me privately please? You can find my address on http://www.daniel-hertrich.de/contact (http://www.daniel-hertrich.de/contact)

I'd like to try what Bochs can do for me. Even if I'm not able to run PAL programs, it may still e useful for some other old programs.

thanks
