Title: I'm Sorry I'm Such A Newbie...
Post by: glmason on May 20, 2005, 07:53:38 pm
I was about to send my zaurus 5000D to the junk heap of early adoptions, (a bad habit that has cost me a healthy retirement fund). When I got a slim server and sqeezebox2 for my internet music I thought that the Zaurus would be a perfect remote control for the slim server.

But alas it had not been turned on for over two months and I had requisitioned the SD card that had the backup restore image on it... But I came accross the oz wedsite and thought cool. I'll build a flash card; and I did flashed successfully, but then relized that the Opera was not on it any more. Some reading has turned up thatOpera on the 3.5.3 Collie is problematic. But I got the instructions I need, I guess; I hate configuring linux stuff... but I'm up for the chalenge. I planed my strategy, going to get the telnet service running, ftp set up... but guess what inetd.cong is not in /etc... and ftping as root needs a password... now I stuck again and all I ever wanted was a Zaurus with a web browser.

Any tips and or suggetions for a num-nuts? New flash? Stick with opie? what?

You should be able to install this version of Opera under OZ

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?act=A...ype=post&id=532 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=532)

You will need the compatibilty libs for it to work.

This post https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...indpost&p=70287 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10612&view=findpost&p=70287) has instructions from someone who used that package.

Thanks John that helps...

Do you have any idea how to setup telnet? There is no inetd.conf in the /etc.

Is there a way to set the password on root?

Thanks Larry

I've never used telnet to connect to my Zaurus, only ssh.

You should have ssh installed by default, however you will need to change roots password before you can ssh into the zaurus.

passwd will allow you to change the password for the root user, however the FTP daemon may use a different password than the system password.

If you're talking about the ftp daemon which is part of Opie (used to sync PIM data) then the password is either 'rootme' or nothing (depends on the security settings).

I'd be more inclined to use sftp (you'll need to install openssh-sftp) or scp (which works straight away).

Compatibilty libs???? What is that and how do you get information about it?

I did follow the instructions of the link to Matt's description of what he did several times, the package installs all apprears in what seems the right place (though the software gets put in /mnt/card/packages/opt/[etc]... instead of /mnt/card/opt/[etc] as Matt referenced.

The icon appears on the desktop but noting happens at launch time... I feel like I'm missing something... what are the compatibility libs?

Thanks, Larry

The compatability libraries are found in the feed.  The package name is Sharp-compat-libs.  When you install the package you will get a purple and green icon on your settings tab. Click it, wait a few seconds, then choose list, select the applications tab from the list, then choose Opera, and click OK.  Now Opera will use the compat libraries instead of the Open Zaurus libraries.

Well I guess I am as dumb as a post... but I can not find the Sharp-compat-libs any where, some pages I've used search on the Zaurususersgroup, openZaurus, OE forums and the ZaurusSoft sites... the closest I got was opera-compat but it was a dead link.

When one says "the Feed" which one is refered too? The link to Zaurus feed does not have a "Sharp-compat-libs"

Is it something set up on the Zaurua itself?

You can install the compat libs one of two easy ways:

using ipkg from the command line, ipkg update && ipkg install -d sd sharp-compat-libs

using the package manager inside the settings tab of opie, update your list of feeds and then scroll down to sharp-compat libs, check the box and apply installing to SD.

The feeds are already set up in ipkg.conf for your package manager if you are installing from an internet connection.

If you don't have your Z connected to the internet the feeds are here:
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/feed/ (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/feed/)
and the upgrades feed here:
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/upgrades/ (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/upgrades/)

You can build a small feed on your CF-card or SD-card if you don't have a way to connect to internet with Z... do a search for the proper way to do this on the forum. There are many post explaining the procedure.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, guys! Your patience is astounding and appriecated!!!

But... there is always a but isn't there...

I am connected to the internet and I did figure out with John's help how to get "the feed", and I tried the package manager way of going about the install... but I'm getting a linking error. This morning I changed the pass word for root so I could use SSH and putty... do I need to tell the ipkg-conf (?) about the new root password?

So now I see the green and purple icon, but I get a "could not find application" error...

I can connect with the ssh and try it the other way, but am curious as to how to change setting in the package manger if that is what is needed.

Thanks again, you guys rock.

Your linking error is not password related. You will have to use ipkg-link where you have installed the app.

ipkg-link add (name of new app here)

or if you installed to your SD-card it would be:

ipkg-link mount /media/card

would find and link everything on card

Nope... tried it both ways, I still get the could not locate makecompat application...

when I run the link it says that it is adding it... opera still just doesn't work either...

I guess I can remove everything and start all over again! This is dis-hearting.

Was there any thing I should have done when I put the card in, the system seem to recognize it OK.

Do you have your SD-card formatted with ext2? This is necessary for symlinks.

Well since I have not idea what that is I guess not? How would I go about doing that?

Although, I do see the links in the directories? i.e. .opera in /home/root...

First you must have e2fsprogs-mke2fs installed from base feed.

Disclaimer: I'm not responsible if you screw this up!

Note: Windows or your camera will no longer be able to read this card... but you can return it to a FAT format whenever you need it for that purpose.

OK...follow the instructions:

umount /dev/mmcda1
fdisk /dev/mmcda (it will ask you for a command)
d (this will delete a partition - note that some SD disks may not have a partition to begin with, in this case skip straight to pressing 'n' to create a new one)
1 (this will delete partition #1)
n (this will create a new partition)
p (this will create it as a Primary partition)
1 (Choses partition 1)
Enter (to take default start cylinder)
Enter (to take default end cylinder)
v (this will verify that the partition has been created)
t (to change partition type)
1 (to select partition 1)
83 (to select ext2)
w (this will save the table and exit the fdisk program)
mkfs.ext2 /dev/mmcda1(this will format the partition with the ext2 file system)
mount /dev/mmcda1 /mnt/card

Now you can install apps and symlink them on your SD-card

Thanks Greg, I post a note tomorrow about how it went.

Well this is really discouraging, dis-hearting, dissapointing, etc, etc... waa, waa, waa!

I did the ext2 format that went well, the sharp-compat-libs are now available, I re-installed Opera 7.55 (several times now, totally removing all traces each time I reinstall) but always the same result. "Opera 7.55 terminated due to signal code SIGSEGV"...

All I ever wanted was a Zaurus with a browser, now three days later I'm still at square one - oh wait I have an ext2 formated SD card. My wife is laughing at me mercilessly.

Thank you all you have been great and patient but in the final anaysis I don't think SL-5000D are up the the task.

Maybe I just need to go back and see if I can find an earlier version.

Why not install konq/e? That doesn't suffer from the hideous binary-only situation opera is in.

Did you add opera to the sharp-compat-libs with the icon or the command line? You can add it with either... but it must be added.

Start it with the terminal:
# opera

and post the output here

As koen has already noted konq/e is also available for a browser, but opera does work with OZ.

OK I'lll give that a try tonight... and will post some time tonight (Monday) I did add opera to the sharp compat libs...

Is it possible to get rid of all the PIM applications, and which packages would I need to uninstall? Would that give me a little more space on internal system?

You can uninstall your pim apps and reinstall them to your SD-card if you need more space... but why? Just install all apps to your SD-card... isn't that why you formated it with ext2?

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of removing them all together, I don't use the PDA feautures at all and though it might give me more room to developing stuff...

But, that is getting ahead of myself... I need to trying and get Opera running first then I'll worry about that later. The one little hitch though, I was removing what I thought was  safe stuff this moring but appeartly not, Opie won't come up any more... something about thinking I already have a home root... only the Linux session comes up.

So I thought I'd take the oportunity and re-flash and start from the begining, now that I know what to do should take much time.

Maybe the SIGSEGV error has something to do with all the fumbling around I did at first.

Either way I'll post the result, if successful I'll recap, if not I send the output of any error statements now that I realize I can run it from the terminal.

Actually I would not be apposed to using the sharp ROMs but I'm not sure which one and there are no instructions. All the ROM I have been adding I put a initrd.bin file and zImage file on the cf card, but the sharp roms say name file "ospack", but then there is not other instructions to go with it, so I not sure I getting all the info.

See this thread (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7825&hl=rom).
There I point to a Sharp (or Sharp like) ROM which comes as a initrd.bin and a zImage and can be flashed just as the ROM you flashed. Try it. Note that you may have to scroll down to my second post on the thread because the URL I gave in the first post was broken.

Heres Sharps page that describes installing an os pack on a 5500, the 5000D should be the same.

With that being said I strongly you keep at OZ!  It's a little tricky but so fast and cool!!!

I installed to sd

I did do ipkg-link add opera,

I did do ln -s /mnt/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/.opera /home/root/.opera
(but the ipkg already must have put the the link there because I got the message  that the file existed... I had no previous opera installed).

I did this from a fresh flash, mount of sd as a ext2 file system, a fresh install of the sharp compat libs and linked it to the sharp libs...  but I did not do a usr/share link, but opera is there already.

Installing a browser should not be this hard!!!

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...2&hl=opera&st=0 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10612&hl=opera&st=0)

If you did the postinst set up the links wrong(I think it was for 3.5.2).

You'll want to remove some things
Code: [Select]
rm /home/root/.opera
rm /home/root/.operasave
rm /usr/share/opera

and then redo them
Code: [Select]
ln -s /mnt/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/.opera /home/root/.opera
ln -s /mnt/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/.operasave /home/root/.operasave
ln -s /mnt/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/opera /usr/share/opera

I hope these things get it going!  (Just think how good it will feel to search the web with Opera on OZ  )

Glad to see it work.

If it crashes a lot modify /home/zaurus/.opera/opera.ini to increase the cache sizes to the max and then copy the file to /root/.opera as CaptainZilog suggested.
