Title: Z 3000 Big Problem
Post by: Sirius Black on May 21, 2005, 07:34:54 pm
Please, I need urgent help, I have a Z 3000 and last nigth it went dead, not dead dead but almost dead, I was just unistalling two game programs one called snake the other one called LGeneral, after the unistall It worked fine but I decided to do a reboot, just in case, after the reboot I got the time/date page and the program just kind of got hung, I could not get it to close so I try to reboot one more time without luck, so i decided to take the battery out, after I replaced the battery and tried to reboot again my problem started, I just can pass the Sharp with the japanese symbol on the bottom, in the very bottom of the screen I get a black line with a kind of the old Dos cursor ( the big rectangle) and it looks like some information is scrolling at great speed, I gave it time but could not get to pass this screen, what can I do to correct the problem, I am a new Zaurus user and I have no a clue to what to do, please help me.
I am using ROM V 1.01 JP, Qtopia V 1.5.4, Linux kernel V 2.4.20
I have searched all the topics in this forum without any answer that can help me.

Thanks for the help from a desperate guy.

Sounds like you managed to corrupt your Z. Congratulations, I've done it myself as well after 2 days of owning the Z

What I had to do was a factory reset to restore it to the default factory setting which means everything on your Z will be wiped and gone and it will be back in Japanese like the day it got shipped.

It involves a few steps and is well documented on Sharp's support page, but if you don't know how to read Japanese, then TriSoft's manual will be a good help for you. Those guys at TriSoft did a pretty good job of translating all the important basic stuff. From what I've seen, they provide the best support and I would have bought my Z from them if they were not so far away.

Thanks for the fast reply, although it looks like very bad news I was hoping to a complete recover without losing all my info.
I didn't buy my Zaurus from Trisoft, I live in Mexico so I bought it from Dynamism in the US, I sent them a mail today with the explanation of what happend, I hope they have the same recovery programm that Trisoft has.

Thanks again

The factory reset feature comes build in on the Zaurus and is made by Sharp. That's why it reverts to Japanese  The same process will work with the Dynamism units as well. TriSoft just went further than the rest of them by writing an English manual.

sirius, do not worry.

I bought my c3000 from dynamism as well. Follow the trisoft info page for resetting back to factory condition. Then follow the menus in Japanese to restore your back up. You do have a back up right?

If not, Dynamism will send you the back up they made of your unit before they shipped it to you. Piece of cake. I have done this before as well. After installing x/qt then resetting it.

Good Luck.

This reminds me, I don't have a backup myself and have been meaning to look up how to do it.
Any good pointers?

Thanks,

Thanks all for the nice reply, I confess I didn't have a backup, actually Scot has a point, I do not know how to do a backup any help in backing up my Zaurus would be appreciated.
I hope tomorrow (monday) Dynamism has an answer, I will let you all know how it went.

i went through such a problem on my Z. It didn't want to boot and i had no backup.

1- to do  a backup, you have a backup/restore in the settings menu for that. But you can also do a
Code: [Select]
tar cvf /mnt/cf/backup.tar /hdd3 in a terminal to backup your data on a CF card (you need to have a CF card bigger than your data of course).  This command will only backup what's on /hdd3 partition (hard drive of the Z, not the /home/zaurus for example -- if you have kdepim or apache installed it's by default in /hdd2 and not in /hdd3)

2- when the Z does not want to boot, you can start in "rescue mode" (have a look at B+D boot with the Z, it should be on pelon's page http://www.xlfag.com/zaurus/ (http://www.xlfag.com/zaurus/), in part 4. -- you don't have to partition, but use the D+B option to start a rescue console). Do not forget to put your CF or SD card for backup before booting. Once in the console, you can copy or tar (see 1- above) your data to your memory card.

once your backup is made, you can start the "reset" process.

good luck
