Title: Hp Calculator Simulation - Nonpareil
Post by: hbo on May 22, 2005, 04:59:19 am
[span style=\'font-size:12pt;line-height:100%\']Note: Updated for nonpareil_0.67-pdaxrom-0.1 release[/span]

[span style=\'font-size:13pt;line-height:100%\']HP Calculators for pdaXrom/kathrin[/span]

This is a new release of my port of nonpareil (http://nonpareil.brouhaha.com) which is a microcode level simulator of old HP desktop calculators by Eric Smith.  Highlights of this release include the addition of 14 (!) calculators, including the HP-41CX.

All the calculators together take up lots of space, so I have separated out the base simulator, and produced add-on packages for the calculators. Here is a :rogues gallery" of the included calculators:

[span style=\'font-size:12pt;line-height:100%\']"Classic" Calculators[/span]

HP-35  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-45  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-55  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-80  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

[span style=\'font-size:12pt;line-height:100%\']"Woodstock" Calculators[/span]

HP-21  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-25   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-67  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

[span style=\'font-size:12pt;line-height:100%\']"Spice" Calculators[/span]

HP-32e  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-33c  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-34c  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-373  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-38c  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-38e  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

[span style=\'font-size:12pt;line-height:100%\']"Coconut" Calculators[/span]

HP-41CV  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-41CX  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

[span style=\'font-size:12pt;line-height:100%\']"Voyager" Calculators[/span]

HP-11C  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-12C  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-15C  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  HP-16C  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The quoted names refer to processor architectures. Refer to Eric's site (http://nonpareil.brouhaha.com) for details.

As you can see, the "Voyager" calculators are layed out in landscape mode. This probably makes them the most suitable calculators for actual use on a clamshell Zaurus. The "portrait mode" calculators will fit on a clamshell's rotated screen, or on an SL-6000's normal mode screen. Of these, the HP-41CX is the most powerful, with Alphanumerics and superior programmibility. Of couse, it's 25 years old, making it among the younger of the calculators represented!

[span style=\'font-size:11pt;line-height:100%\']Personal Note[/span]

The HP-41C is the machine on which I first learned to program back in 1982.  I didn't even know that was what I was doing until I was a good way through the introductory material in the user manual. For years, in order to understand an unfamiliar algorithm, I would  code it in HP-41CV's register-oriented assembler-like RPN language. Finding nonpareil was therefore a great delight. Before there was Zaurus, before there was Linux, there was this calculator. Awwww.

[span style=\'font-size:11pt;line-height:100%\']Installation[/span]

Anyhow, I built this package natively on my 860 using the zgcc from kathrin-rc10. I imagine there might be difficulty running it on an earlier version, but maybe not.  (It is reported to run on RC9 as well.) You will need to install the base ipk nonpareil_0.62, then one or more of the nonpareil-hp* calculator packages [span style=\'font-size:11pt;line-height:100%\']Note that if you installed the first version of this software, hp-41cv-nonpareil_0.62_armv5tel.ipk, you must uninstall it before installing these packages.[/span] If you don't, you will get errors when you install the new ones.

   Yeah, what can I say?

It's really easy to port to this environment. They've obviously gone to great lengths to provide a very compatible Gnome build set up. It looks like they are trying to do the same for KDE as well.

Great shining kudos to the exalted masters of .. wait.. *slap* .. I mean, good job guys!

I've added the HP-16C simulation and broken the software into three ipks. I've edited the first post in this thread to reflect the changes. I also added the author's name, giving him proper credit. I had unintentionally left it out yesterday morning.

Enjoy!

It shouldn't take much to add this to your list:

Yet another update. I've added the HP-11C, HP-12C and HP-15C to the ipks for nonpareil.

Actually, I am having trouble adding that. It uses Imake, and the Imake setup in RC10 refers to paths from the cross compiler, not from the native SDK. And I don't see Imake as part of the cross-compiler SDK shipped with RC9.

hbo,

Did you see this thread?

I didn't get too far, but I have no experience.

Thanks for the pointer! That does suggest a work-around for the broken imake in the RC10 native SDK. I'm kind of wrapped up trying to get a 41C emulator to talk to my real 41-CX, though. If I take a break from that (other than to work for a living, LOL)  I may dive into X48 a little more.

Like the thread mentions, it would be cool to have Qt versions of these things too. That's what I'm looking to do with nonpareil, eventually.

Thanks for such a great selection of HP calculators!

Does anybody know if these packages are compatible with Kathrin-1.1.0beta3-akita and SL-C3100?

I have tried to install the base package but the installer complained about some illegal characters being used in the file name...

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

xAPE
