Title: Any Luck Getting Built-in Serial Port Work On C1k?
Post by: albertr on May 26, 2005, 11:44:57 am
I think I've heard someone was succesfully using built-in serial port (/dev/ttyS0) found on Sharp I/O connector on C3K, but how about one on C1K? I'm assuming that hardware is the same so it should work on C1K too, but I'm having troubles with it @ 115200 8E1. I'm getting zillion of frame errors and parity errors. Unfortunately, I don't have a scope to check the signal. I've tried both SerialIO's cable (which has a built-in rs232 tranciever) and direct cross-over connection assuming it;s TTL voltage levels (~ +3.3V) as on SL-5500. Still doesn;t work.

I've even replaced the ucking fugly "dirty hack" sharp's serial driver with a more sane PXA serial driver from RMK/Intel kernel for PXA27X. Still no dice. The same driver works just fine with /dev/ttyS3 which is a CF-serial card with OX950 uart (after patching it to correctly calculate baud rate). So it really looks like some sort of hardware issue. Maybe I'm missing something?

Anyone had some luck with getting it work? If so, could you please post what was the cable used, the equipment on the other end and the exact port settings?

Aahhh - scratch it, the problem was my brain damage caused by extensive amounts of coffee.

- There's a serial port on a C1K?  Like, not USB?
- Coffee causes brain damage?

The port cover in the center of the back of the 1000 is the same type of connector as on all the older Zaurii. On the older Zaurii it's called a Sharp IO Connector, and carries serial, USB, power, and JTAG.

The C1k/3k connector still has Serial (TTL-level only. I'm not sure if the older Zaurii are the same) and Jtag. I wouldn't go trying to stick a USB or power connector in there, though.

Well, being a complete freak I plugged a power cable on the serial port of one of my C1000 and, well, it didn't work.
As a matter of fact, I've also plugged the Zaurus to a 5V 1A USB charger (i.e in the mini-AB port) and - well, didn't work either (so I have cut the USB plug of the charger and replaced it with the power plug from the Sharp charger, since it's damn 110V - now it works, hehe).
I don't recall well, but I think I've tried a USB-serial cable too and, guess what - it didn't work.

Conclusion : it's TTL level only, whereas other models weren't. But it's fine with ttyS0
