First off, I have 2 Zauri - one with the Sharp 3.13 ROM and one on which I have been trying Open Zaurus 3.5.3. Purchased second Z on EBay for a backup in case my old Z fails.
The good:
My new Sandisk Connect Plus card works for WIFI with install of hostap-utils and prism3-support files.
Am able to wirelessly sync my Z with Qtopia 1.7 desktop for Windows XP (it's incredibly fast too.)
The bad:
I have only been able to install a few apps and that was with a struggle - "linkling" (sic) errors all over the place. I have noticed that I do not have to go to the console and type in anything to get them to work though - just have to reboot (not just restart Qtopia - a major reboot). BUT EVERY time I install something new from the feed, I have to reboot (BIG reboot not just restart Qtopia) to get the previous apps I have installed to work again. Otherwise I click on their icons and nothing happens.
The ugly:
I have been unable to get Opera to work except a couple of times for a few minutes. I get that same error that has been reported when I type "opera" in the console. I followed instructions on the forum explicitly and only once did it work (tried the ZUG feed one, tried an old 7.3 ipk I had, tried the opera_7.55_OZ3.5.3_arm.ipk). What happened last time was I had installed opera_7.55_OZ3.5.3_arm.ipk following instructions in a thread and it WORKED, then, happy as a clam, I decided to install OpieMail and give it a whirl and that installation totally trashed my Opera so I haven't been able to get it to work since. OpieMail doesn't work either even though I have the exact same settings on it as my 3.13 Z - that's another tale of woe.
The time clock runs like 20 minutes slow a day....what kind of a PDA do you have if it can't even keep the time??? (I had Sharp 3.10 on this Z just 2 days ago and it kept perfect time!)
Every one out of 2 or 3 times when I reboot (which I have to do CONSTANTLY) the Z seizes up in the middle of the reboot with the green light and yellow light steady on. I then have to do a hard reset.
The restore of backup and restore only seems to save a few things; it really doesn't get you back "where you were" in time.
The cancel/off button doesn't work either. You have to do a hard reset to get the Z going again. I've taken to using the "suspend" on the start button when I want to shut the z off...but sometimes I forget...so that's another fun thing.
It seems to me that the basics should work on a ROM. I don't expect every application will install like a dream but the ONLY applications which installed like a dream and worked on OZ without a reboot was Shopper! Funny, huh? Maybe some of you programmers can get a clue from that, I hope, and get the other programs to install correctly.
Thanks for letting me vent.

What do you mean by this? Have you run ipkg-link to automatically create symlinks for programs which you've installed to something other than root?

Use ipkg-link to create the symlinks, then restart opie and the icons will appear.
I get that same error that has been reported when I type "opera" in the console.
compat libs...........

As in doesn't do what you want, or doesn't even start....?

Interesting. Which machine do you have?

If you have a collie, this may well be the double reset bug. Generic with the hardware, no matter which ROM.

No, not really. I don't tend to have problems installing things, if you want stuff fixed then I'd encourage you to either produce patches, or docs, or at least a bit more information so that the problems can be reproduced (other than opera, you've not named any ipks which you had trouble with, not listed the errors).
Cheers,

Lardman:
Ipkg-link doesn't do anything. You still have to reboot to get FUNCTIONING icons and you still lose the linkage after installing another app so there's no point to doing it. The feeds create a folder called "packages" on the SD card and install to that - maybe that is part of the problem.
The problem with Opera is NOT the compat libs - they are installing and doing fine and I linked them to Opera. When you click on the Opera icon, it does nothing EVEN IF you have done lots of entries at the console like:
ipkg-link add opera
ln -s /mnt/card/packages/opt/QtPalmtop/opera/.opera /home/root/.opera "this may be done"
ipkg-link mount /media/card/packages
ipkg-link add sharp-compat-libs
The error after entering the word opera at the console is:
opera: symbol lookup error: opera: undefined
symbol: _7QString.shared_null
I thought I saw it was reported as a bug.
I can't send or receive email with an installed OpieMail. I have both my Zauri side by side here and the settings are exactly the same and I can send and receive mail with the Z that has the Sharp 3.13.
Okay, you want details:
I installed ZUC (from the feed) - got icon but no function when icon was clicked. REBOOTED the Zaurus (not a matter of just restarting Opie) and then ZUC functions fine. Next, install JustReader off the feed - get icon with no function when clicked AND when you click on ZUC it no longer works EITHER so....you have to REBOOT the Zaurus and then both ZUC AND JustReader function. Next, install Shopper from the feed - get icon and when you click on the icon IT WORKS!! BUT now when you click on ZUC or JustReader, THEY no longer WORK! So.....you have to reboot AGAIN and then all 3 apps work, but if you try to install something else, you have to go through the whole routine again. Is this any way to run a ROM??
To top it off, 1 out of 2 reboots results in a hangup where you have to do a HARD reset - not a SOFT reset which makes you tend to not want to install anything out of fear.
I never had the hangup-suspend problem before with the Sharp ROM and I've had the Zaurus at least 2 years. It also kept the right time!
I wonder if the programmers are trying this ROM starting out with a BLANK sd card and a BLANK cf card - betcha they would discover these problems before they released the ROM.

ipkg-link mount /media/card/packages should do the trick. I've never had to reboot to get anything to work so I'm stumped there if the above doesn't fix it.

This means the compat libs are not being used. It could be that the GUI compat libs program hasn't worked, or more likely, with all of the rebooting, the symlinks from the storage card are being recreated and overwriting the compat lib symlinks. Perhaps try running makecompat (name?) from the command line and pointing it at the <mount point>/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/opera binary, that way the compat symlink will be automatically symlinked by ipkg-link rather than overwritten.

No idea about this - does it produce any more info if you run it from the command line?

Curious. Try running from the command line if the icon doesn't work - that should give an idication of whether the binary can't be found, or some other lib has not been ipkg-linked (which may happen after a reboot I suppose - not all that sure as I don't reboot very much).

The double reset bug is a known 'feature' of the collies - with all ROMs afaik . Make sure you suspend between reboots, otherwise this is what you get.
I don't know about the time thing - though it would be interesting to see if it's a clock related problem (constant time loss) or something to do with time suspended, etc.
