I am going through nursing school and i needed a drug guide.
So i grabed a drugbook called "prentice hall Drug guide". It came with a CD. I downloaded a cd contents into a folder and placed that folder in the sd card. When i want to use the drug guide, i go into that directory and click on "starthere.html" And i have a very powerfull drugbook. i do a search and it pops out the drug information. its done in opera.
now for reffences, i grabed zbedic for the zaurus. There are a few books that are very cool to try. wikipedia which is 420 mb and placed in a 1g sd in qtopia directory. i used zbedic to search for new libraries and now i have an encyclopedia on my zaurus. you can download the wikipedia file for zbedic here.
wikipedia-encyclopedia (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=51673&package_id=116377)
and you can download zbedic here zbedic (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=51673&package_id=47925)
there home page is here home page (http://bedic.sourceforge.net/)
everything here is installed in sd.
bdicty 5.1 is needed. other bdicty versions will not work.
medical refferences is a bit iffi.....i went to beiks.com, purchased a few medical reffences under palmos and also dictionaries in zip file format. extracted the lexicons or the *.PDB files and placed them in the qtopia/bdicty directory in sd.
im posting this because i know some of you guys are interested in med stuff.
-
let me get this right...you were able to download PALM OS stuff into the zaurus and it worked???If so I have MANY MANY programs you might be interested in I am practicing Physician assistant who does family practice.....
Bob
-
hmm....PDB files work and they need to be in that format.
get yourself the zaurus version of bdicty..i can post it up somewere and its free. bdicty 5.1 program is free. purchasing the library is a must but beiks do carry free librarys for you to downlaod. I have the medical enc, medical dic, english dic, thesaurus, and i tried the drug refference but failed. I did manage to pop the cd structure from a drug refference book and it works fantastic. the software needs to say
"requirements. html browser explorer, netscape, etc." then it should work.
the only problem i see with the program is when you have a sentence that says
"administer 1/2 tab zoloft q2h!" -----------------this is not a real adm so dont do this...just example for folks!!!!!!!!!!
etc. the "1/2" is not shown but you see a square box instead in its place because the zaurus fonts does not carry this character as to were word and palm does.
this is important! i use the zaurus sl5500 and beiks works for this unit. I am not sure how it works for the other units.
-
It's not palm programs that work, but palm database files (pdb or prc files containing text etc) that work.
There are a number of apps that can read these files - the programs won't work but, without an emulator. Which is realy really slow

i purchased my medical refference from beiks for the palm os
i just yanked the pdb files from the zip and antered the serial when i load the program
it is drm encry...of some kind
i am in the process of purchasing tabers med cyclopedic dic
the 19th version is in cd and runs in IE wich i can run the cd in opera from my zaurus.
i am now really considering a c1000 because of the bigger screen.

prc=palm program files. can't do much with those without an emulator
pdb=palm database files. more of a possibility there.

I am new to Zaurus...I purchased mine on E-bay not realizing that the palm stuff did not work on it,,,,my palm was dying...anyway I have been having one heck of a time getting the correct software to download or "sync" with...that problem is finally solved and I am using Qtopiadesk because I do not use outlook...now how do you load the PDB programs into the qutoptia desk? is there another program that is used to transfer these files....I am computer ignorant and would appreciate a blow by blow instruction the first round...if I need another program to transfer the files onto the zaurus where do I get it????also Cresho.....please post the url for the pharm program you are talking about. I am using a Palm Pilot Tungsten T5 now for epocrates, and a host of other programs I use in the office for references. Treat me like I am an ignoramous here and give it to me in English....I am VERY greatfull to find someone who wants to use their Zaurus like I want to use mine...I just have no idea where to begin here.......I thought I was doomed to have an expensive MP3 player here when I realized the palm stuff would not work on it....

I've got about 45 prc files that file tells me are "AportisDoc file", I think I got most of them from MemoWare - guess no body told them they should be using pdb
Opie-Reader happily reads these - thanks Tim

First off Mr. bob-
You need to tell me what you are going to be running and you need to tell me if you purchased the items. Some purchased items require special software which can help you unlock the "books or material you want to run"
i use beiks' bdicty 5.1 to unlock the pdb files which pdb files are the actual books. Requires a key to unlock each book.
so let me know what you would like to use. Some say opie reader run certain pdb files which are not locked which don't require a key. these special pdb files are created or edited or translated by other members of other forums and i ll tell you you there are thousands of those files. Free for community use they say and it is.
the medical stuff, i created a html start page which has google right on top and under them are the medical drug guides such as "prentice hal health drug guide that has a cd" and also, "lippincott's drug lists now this one i had to edit each html because some stupid editor used capital letters on an html and the links became broken in opera." I linked these two books to my start page with an html editor for quick refference and instead of fishing the books through directories. i recommend prentice hall health drug guide for now and make sure it comes with a cd.
Taber's is another thing. i have to order the book with the cd online since my schools dont carry them yet as it is so new to the market. I hope they still require a broswer to use it.

Hello
Go to externe.net/zaurus. I explain how to create ebooks for the Merck Manual etc. It's simply cleaning files. You can then compress them with jpluck to read them with opie-reader
-
You need to tell me what you are going to be running and you need to tell me if you purchased the items. Some purchased items require special software which can help you unlock the "books or material you want to run"
I downloaded the 5.3.1 reader and decided to try it out. Unfortunately, the regular trial dictionaries I downloaded all said it was expired. The voice ones are okay, but it's all European languages, and being in Hawaii, asian languages are more relevant.
The medical stuff looks interesting
http://www.beiks.com/palmzonebg/Lexicons/Medical.htm (http://www.beiks.com/palmzonebg/Lexicons/Medical.htm)
Unfortunately, they say it's only for the palm. Any thoughts on the ones that are there? The drug one looks cool, if there was a way to keep it up to date.

Beiks stuff works to a certain extent. Here is my short review.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
beiks 5.3.1 reader has a problem. You cannot install the pdb files in an sd. It forces it to internal
BDicty_5.1_arm.ipk is my choice of software. Ill add a link attachment here since its free for download anyway. files are stored in /mnt/QtPalmtop/bdicty or /home/QtPalmtop/bdicty
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now for my review of the books. pdb from palm os section in zip format.
CommonMeds.PDB- doesnt work for beiks/zaurus
EnglishPro.PDB- I like it and i get updates zaurus version
EnThes.PDB- I like it and i get updates zaurus version
MediAcro.PDB acronyms- its okay but for one acro, there are like 50 meanings so i find it useless.
Medical.PDB Some symbols like 1/2 is represented as a box or 1/4. certain symbols are gone and you only see a box. Definitions are there though.
MedicineNet.PDB symbol problem here as well but you still get the definitions alright.
for a dictionary and thesaurus, you can use zbedic and there are books for these so you dont need to waste your money...i wish i knew then.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For drug refference i did this.
i installed opera since netfront doesnt work with certain search engines from a cd drug book. and if you did not do so yet, follow these instructions just like i posted here.
[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14100]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14100[/url]
Then i purchased this book
http://myphlip.pearsoncmg.com/altproducts/...cfm?vbookid=481 (http://myphlip.pearsoncmg.com/altproducts/drugguide/ab2bookhome.cfm?vbookid=481)
make sure it comes with a cd and make sure requirements is a browser.
Netfront does not work with the html search engine. Opera does so that is why i recommend you install opera if its not in your sl6000.
so copy the contents of the cd into a folder called "prentice cd" Don't modify its content or you break its links. Place "prentice cd" into your sd card...anywere your comfortable with.
you can either launch the application from start.html or create your own start page html and place links to your cd start page for drug guide. So far i have 2 cd links to my start page as well as google and gona add tabers and physician's desk refference.
-
Medical.PDB Some symbols like 1/2 is represented as a box or 1/4. certain symbols are gone and you only see a box. Definitions are there
ok, that's a font issue. If you install the right font, it should display properly.
Thanks for the indepth review of what's there, I'll go through the info one by one.

Hi,
I am a nursing student too and am excited to finally get complete drug info on my Z. Thanks for the helpful info. I am running Cacko 1.23 on a C860 with Opera 7.25 Browser already installed. So I skipped the instructions on installing the opera browser and fixing it in the terminal. I too am a Zaurus beginner and am a bit scared off by terminal commands.
I don't use my Zaurus to connect to the Internet, yet. Opera was really really slow opening local files on my Z. So I went thru the Files tab.
When I try to open StartHere I get a message:
Could not open file
file://localhost/usr/mnt.rom/cf/Prentice CD/DGData/frameset/home.html
If I open the "Search" file, though, I can search my drugs. So it works.
The only problem is the drug classification font does not show. It looks like Helvetica caps. I don't know how to install fonts on my Zaurus, yet.
Do you use BDicty only for lexicons or reference books that you download onto your Z?
danke,
bethany

I went to bdicty. purchased the medical encyclopedia, medical dictionary, medical acronyms, for the ...i forgot if it was the palm or the windows. anyway, i extracted the files from the zip (its zip and not the exe)and placed them in qtpalmtop directory under bdicty on an sd card. the software (an old one)bidicty can use the files off the sd card. The only problem i have with it is number values. It will not tell me normal range for eldery is 97 degrees and therapeutic fever is not over 100.3 degrees f. it has no font for numbers.
now for the drug guide, i have 2 of them. one of them i had to make hand made and redirect the links on an html (took me 30 minutes) the other one was already set. I just looked for index.html and started from there.
if you have msn messenger, i can get with you on msn and i can kinda help you debug your stuff. not sure what drug guide you are using.
msn messenger is cresho@hotmail.com

can you post a screenshot of a drug known and i can compare it to it? i am running stock sharprom.

is there an easy way to take a screenshot?
the font that is missing is the font following "Classifications:" in the red box for each drug monograph. in the drug book it appears like a small all caps font in Times Romans. All the other fonts appear fine.

Okay, here's the screenshot of Phenytoin. Notice the squares after Classifications.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
And, here are screenshots of my start menu. I've lost my normal font and am getting this "garbage" in my start menu, taskbar and clock. This is maybe a problem with Cacko, which I've had installed for at least a month and have not had any problems with.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Before this garbage font showed up, I rotated the screen. I rebooted and the garbage font went away.
So..if I open the Prentice Drug Guide with my screen rotated--the keyboard is not available--the garbage font goes away and I can read the drug classification. To take a picture I had to use the keyboard. The screenshot switched to the landscape screen, but the drug classification is still in a readable font.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Without shutting down or rebooting, I tested it again with the screen rotated to clamshell mode--keyboard is available--and the garbage font returns.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I read in another post, that rotating the screen will give you garbage fonts. Seems like I'd have to go back into my font library to find out if something is missing in the "code". For now though, I think I'll just have to use the drug guide using handwriting. Unless, there's a quick answer.
Can you recommend a good Linux tutorial?

I need to ask you some questions.
are you using cacko 1.23? and does the menus look like that by default? then it is a font issue.
ill post a pick on here because it looks way different than that... mines looks way better.

yes, i am using cacko 1.23. the menu looks fine now. i rebooted, and all the normal fonts reappeared. if i use the drug guide with the keyboard closed, i can view all the fonts in the drug guide. you should be able to see that from the fourth picture that i posted.

first off---"Could not open file
file://localhost/usr/mnt.rom/cf/Prentice CD/DGData/frameset/home.html"
.....remove all spaces and capital letters and see if it works...(including changing the folder names.
cacko uses a dif set of fonts which disables the originals. You may need to go back to stock and try my ipk installer which translates it to english and my method of installing opera 7.30
I can also send you my cd if you preffer for testing purpouses since you own an updated drug guide....i dont have a problem. Im curious since i was about to update mines myself if it is a font issue.
2 problems....font based or java based. the script dictates how to present the file. Maybee i can modify it so it will display a higher res font instead of the lower one. I am not sure..just thinking around.
Let me know what you think and if you want to try cd...could be that script.

So your method of installing opera 7.30 would involve going back to original Sharp Rom 3.10 or 3.13 and then installing Opera? Why are you still using the original Sharp ROM?
I'll send you a copy of the CD.
You're right. Your screenshots look way better. But I'm not going for looks here. I'm lucky if I can just keep my Z functioning.

thanks... i got the files. i have clinical at a hospital today at 9am to 11pm(need to study pathophysiology, drugs, iv's before hand). Taking care of 3 patients. Ill work on it friday.
So far, everything works on my pda. no font problems at all with my current setup. Ill look into cacko on friday morning and find out why it isnt working. It is a font issue probably asking for a size that doesnt exist. I glanced at the ".js" files but it just locked up my pc. Pretty big. Ill try another software friday morning while i work on the 2 new themes for cacko.
updated.........i can now view it. Looks simple...now its all about trial and error.

i've been using it in the hospital, and have discovered that if I click the button on the taskbar to fit all the text into one viewable window, the funny font goes away and I can read everything.
it's probably not a Cacko issue. thanks for your help, and enjoy the updated drug guide. i find the drug guide very useful and not too lengthy. are your medical references useful when you're on the floor?

I just wanted to give your attention to this site: It has a lot of databases of medical information. I suspect that a lot of it can be used on our little Zaurus!

Some of the instructors let me carry the device around. when i am in a bind, i just pop it out and the 2005 is much faster than the 2006. I use the encyclopedia to view information like pneumonia, CVA, TURP, GERD...etc. it just gives me a overview and not an in depth. Good enough when i am picking patients for next day. I frankly use 2-3 books for making careplans and such.
good luck and i think you missed my last PM.

for those simply wanting to install wiki on their z's i just worked it easily,
download wiki and zbedic as linked in first post, but youll also need SQLite3 for zbedic to run,
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=3874 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=3874)
open zbedic, direct it to the wiki 400+mb file you just dl and vwalla'
-
yep...nice piece of software. the 200mb version works better though. the 400 is still in the works. I also have the wiki quotes, english dictionary, english to spanish installed.

its right next to the one wher eyou downloaded it i think from sourceforge.
let e see.. all the links work for it best. you can agree with me when you test it. I have both installed myself. When i cannot find info on the small, i look at the bigone.

ok, the previous version...
and i see the dictionary;s there too in that second link, very nice specially the conversions for travel...
am dl them , will let you know what i find...

the new dic's are great, the older wiki seems fine, as is quite a size difference, which is obviusly for a reason, but still stuff there...
as for the language conversion dic's , how do i type in a japanese word i see on the street sign to get it into english ??

telemetric,
if you need medical ebooks on the Z, the best solution is to create your own. I suggest you read externe.net/zaurus past articles where I explain how to create your own dic based on OMD; your own ebook based on Mercks Geriatrics Manual, and your own drug database based on South African Monographs.
You can then use the knowledge with your own ebooks - as long as they are available as html files. Feel free to contact me offline (guylhem at gmail dot com) for further help.
