so its safe to say that palm os and regular microsoft pda's are heading this way.

I just want to remind and help spread the word.

I converted my bro from intel to amd for good reason too

i quit buying intel years ago (except my Z).

I agree--boycott 'em. Boycott the related closed pdas.

But.re the intel drm stuff... gamers will stop using intel when this gets out, and that'll hurt 'em. Also , someone will figure out how to turn the crap off.. and sell it as a bios feature

I hope nokia helps the opensource handheld worl out a little with their new stuff

It's only the large companies that can afford to use intel processors in the first place. As a system builder I use amd processors primarily because: speed for speed they perform significantly better, amd processors are considerably cheaper than intel and more reliable. The large system builders however use intel for the simple reason that if you put the words: 'intel inside' in your adverts intel pay 40% of your advertising costs (obviously you have to sign an agreement to buy a fair whack of processors). Now someone like Dell with all their tv advertising are being susbsidised to the tune of millions of dollars a year by intel to use intel processors.

If it ever comes down to a straight slogging match on cost, value and performance intel don't stand a chance. And amd are getting big enough to take them on in a price battle as well :-)
Until sis, via and nvidia produce an integrated drm chipset I personally wouldn't worry about it.

This is quite funny as the pxa270 chips already have that nice new DRM stuff in it, as well as stuff to speed up encryption (like ipsec acceleration) (i belive its called secure zone)

now if only someone would take advantage of that in thier software  all you have to do is use the intell performance primitives (under thier license) and iif the target processor is a pxa270 chip then it does all the hard work for you, mmm mabey i should look more into this

i dont mind it as lon as i control the drm, it would be nice to know that i can trust that no one but me has hacked my zaurus (unlikly). i thik i might go looking into the detials of this stuff now

DRM control is not so much for the fact that you can prevent someone from hacking your zaurus (I dont even think that is possible) but more of the fact that you or someone else (in this case Intel in collusion with the content provider) gets to control the CONTENT that may show or not on your zaurus.

So YOU are not in the control seat - unless you happen to be distributing the content which take advantage of the DRM stuff hardware wise on your own or some other Zaurus.

my mistake, i was talking about the secure boot functions not drm, basically if boot cksum != secure tamper proof stored value then it wont allow  you to boot

would be nice if no effort was involved to do this, but knowing intel i dobght i could even get any info on the secureboot stuff

it's amazing that people have actually bought into this DRM stuff (ie: they believe it's good for them).

it's snake oil -- at best... and wat worst?  well, lets just wait and see what pathetic things they will try to force on everyone.

Microsoft is going to succeed in shoving DRM down the throats of the masses, and the masses will praise Microsoft while they're doing it. And it will be easy for them. How?

Viruses and Spyware.

If nothing's going to run on the computer without the blessing of the Microsoftian overlords, then in one fell swoop they will release the world from fear of the malicious internet.

Not that the masses will realize that MS will practically destroy the internet and software industries in the process, nor notice that they're now bleeding out their arse to pay for it.

That's just a DOS waiting to happen.

Kinda like letting crime get so out of control that martial law looks like a blessing because it STOPS CRIME even though it sorta shackles personal liberties ?

It's a technique that has been used by governements and powerseekers for years, and it does work.  Question is can MS actually pull off the software equivilant of martial law ?

If they do, then we will know for sure that this has been in the works all along.  Like since Windows 3.1. And all the bugs and holes were intentional, or at least known and tacitly allowed just so microsoft can do what you say;  Tell us what software to run, how to run it, where to run it, and thank them for the privilege.
