Try installing the wget package. Qpegps uses some options that the busybox version does not like. That worked for me on Oz 3.5.2 and qpegps 0.9.2.2

You may try to edit the qpegps.conf under your Settings directory, comment the proxy= line.

Try starting qpegps from the console.  After starting the map download, switch to the console and you should see some info regarding what is going wrong.

Mine always took forever to download maps, and seemed like it was locked up too. It may not be locked up at all, but busy downloading maps. Leave it alone for an hour or so, and you may come back and find many maps were slowly downloaded.

why isn't there a map package that can be installed?  Like the whole country?  Or is there?

I download my maps here.
http://gps.pazu.info/ (http://gps.pazu.info/)
It's rather complicated, but there are instructions in the top-right corner.
I use firefox on my windows box, once I have a map, I right-click and save it,
then copy it to the proper directory for qpegps on my Zaurus.
Also there are code numbers displayed, in the middle of the page,
that you have to input into a config file for qpegps,
in order to enable the downloaded map to be displayed in qpegps.
