Since the 3000/1000 have been out for awhile now have any of you noticed excess wear/scracthes? What is esiest to scratch the actual body (is it paint or plastic?) or the chrome bit (is this easy to scratch?)
-
Three months and counting, the white case of my 3000 is virtually unmarked. I can't find so much as a scuff on it. The chrome hasn't faired so well - the surface is covered in very fine lines and scratches.
-
Same for me: white/gray plastic parts as good as new, and chromed parts (the hinge) are (very) slightly marked/scratched.
-
I agree... the white case is flawless, and the screen with protector too. I clean my z twice a week from screen, to keyboard, to all around case with iclean solution and cloth that I bought at the apple store.
The chrome part has some scratches, especially on one side. It seems that when I rotate my screen to pda mode and back... it becomes somewhat uneven, the left side scratches the chrome. I have to adjust it a bit. Is this a design flaw? or normal wear and tear?
Other than that it is as good as new.

Ah thanks for the replies.
I have a question though what did u guys have to do for the chrome bit to get scratched? Is it good at keeping paint at all, or say if u took a paper towel it woudl sctatch up?
How does the silver part (by keyboard) and the keyboard go as far as scratching? what about the silver by the directional buttons is that same silver as the hinge?
-
The only little scratches are on the chrome part caused by regular rotation of the screen, so I guess it can be categorised as wear and tear. However, everthing else is scratchless even though I dropped it once and it tumbled across the floor for a bit

It's quite resistant, I'd say. Most (almost all, in fact) of the scratches on the chrom part are located underneath the two small circular pads (that I think are supposed to prevent the screen from... scratching the hinge!) underneath the screen, which means that the prominent cause of hinge surface wear would be opening, closing or rotating the screen. But fear not, those are really minor scratches. The chrome, at this place, is basically turning from brilliant to mate, but there's nothing there you can feel with your fingers.

The keys are probably the same stuff as the case, and have not changed a bit. The writing on the keys, in particular, hasn't faded - yet! The silver part around the keys, well, gets a bit dirty with time (I don't clean the keyboard as regularly as the screen or case), otherwise it's as good as new.

I'd say so. In any case, it hasn't suffered a scratch yet on my 3000.
Oh, BTW I do recommend using a screen protector. As for me, I've been a loyal customer of Brando's protector for years, especially now that they have the ultra-clear model, it's even better! Most people don't realize that there's a screen protector at all on my devices...

No scratches on my C1000 yet, though I did notice the print on one of the keys (function key) is washed out, so don't type with sweaty hands!

I bought a great case for mine
If it's anything like my old 5500, I bought a good leather case for that and a colleague didn't and his 5500 was newer than mine. By the time two years had passed, mine still looked near enough new, just the good scratch and paint chip, his looked like it had been in a war.

I use and abuse my 3000. It's rock solid. One disturbing thing is that while riding in the almost knee level cargo pants pockets and moving furniture I seem to have rammed it into something. This put 3 small dents near the zaurus logo... DENTS, not cracks. I thought that was interesting and that was pretty much my wakeup call to be more careful and I have been since. I have some scratches on the gray border from where my cell phone holster clip rubs on the zaurus sometimes since the cell phone hangs off hte same pocket I carry the Z in. The chrome part has some very fine scratches, the bottom is flawless, keyboard and screen are flawless as you would expect from a clamshell. I carry my Z AT ALL TIMES in my pockets for months now and it's still fantastic. This is an endorsement - so far.
But a note! Don't leave cards that protrude from the outside in the CF slot. I ruined a CF wifi card because the antenna riding in the pocket and stress cracked the Wifi board (I think). Now I carry the wifi and cf cards in a separate hard shell case.
Thanks,
Mark

- Hiroshi gets babied, pretty much. Rides around in a butt-bag separated from anything that may scratch, mar, or otherwise abuse it. As such, this unit looks brand new ... *except* for the previously noted hinge wear.
- I think the little pads are to support the rotation mechanism while in landscape mode. They quite clearly (to me) ride very, very close to, but do not explicity touch, the chrome hinge. This prevents the screen from moving far "off center" because the pads hit the hinge, but leaves sufficient gap that the screen itself doesn't scrape or catch on the hinge when rotating it to portrait mode. The side-effect of this is that opening and closing the clamshell will invariably scuff the chrome with one of the little pads or the other. (shrug) Insigificant, imho.
- I've spend hours and hours typing on Hiro, and the keys show no sign of wear. Of course that doesn't say much ... I've only had this C1000 for a little over two months. The keys on the laptop didn't start showing significant wear for a year, and I type on that at *least* 40 hrs per week, continuously. I don't expect this keyboard to show wear for some time.
- I've only used one screen protector in my entire life, and didn't like the amount of force it took to do anything, plus the obvious reduction in "resolution", ie, the ability to hit one dinky little button on the screen without interfering with other, nearby controls. I just don't use much pressure and the screen doesn't wear; it doesn't hardly anything to activate a tap. Cricket's screen (the three year old pda that hiro replaced) is flawless except for the upper-right corner, where the "X" button goes on every single window. There's only minor scuffing there, but it's also the only part of the screen where precisely the same spot got hit repeatedly for three years. (grin)
- Overall I'd have to say both Cricket and Hiro are very well constructed...
