Title: Open Office
Post by: omro on June 20, 2005, 03:10:35 pm
Hi All,

I'm sure someone else has asked this, but I did a search for "open office" and didn't find anything too helpful.

Are there plans to add Open Office to the list of apps on this Rom? Would be fantastic to use Open Office on my desktop, laptop and Zaurus! :-)

search for "debian on pdaxrom", read the thread, it is all there.

Good luck,
Chero

why would I want to put debian ontop of pdaXrom, surely that's a bit of a cross purpose? that's why I ignored that posting.

Because the port of open office to arm is not trivial and because the work has been done by the debian developers.

The debian packaged is the only binary of open office available for arm.

So either you install debian, openoffice and run it in a chrooted environment (because the binary won't run with the libc of pdaxrom) or you have to gather the patches from debian, the missing libraries and compile it...(which might takes some time and might be tricky)

Debian over pdaxrom let you access all the debian software and use the optimized x server of pdaxrom.

it can't be recompiled on the Z? not enough RAM, probably...

It probably can be recompiled for pdaxrom....you just need someone to gather the debian patches, the missing libraries, give it a try and fixes the problems that might come up because of different libc version softfloat etc...
(for ram you can use a swap).

The guy who did the port says that compilation on his arm board takes three days......

It's a great thing to try, but could OpenOffice be usable on the Z?  I've just opened an empty text document on 1.1.3 on a Linux box and it's sitting there using 61M.  Add to that the time it takes to start up!

There are some comments about this in the "debian on pdaxrom"-thread.
(I think it's round post 45.)
If you really need it, it's "usable", but gnumeric and abiword are faster.

I tried running through pocketworkstation on Sharp-based roms, but this was much slower. (Pocketworkstation or) debian on pdaxrom is (far) the fastest way to run openoffice i've tried.

OpenOffice or something like that is needed indeed, because many of us would welcome a fully functional office suite with MS Office documents compatibility. It's right 'bout Abiword and Gnumeric, but there's no anything like Powerpoint or something document-compatble and able to use VGA CF cards for video out. I'm in dire need of thing like that and I think that others are, also.

P.S. To use my C760 with a Pretec CompactPresenter had to reflash it to Qtopia and then tweak scripts...  And then flash it back...

I don't know 'bout your CF-card, but powerpoint-presentations work quite good in openoffice (through pocketworkstation) on the Z.

Thanks for that information. The only thing we can do is to plead our great developers to add support for CF VGA cards  . And to try to search for something that's PPT-compatible and not very slow when compiled for pdaXrom.
