Title: Got Simpad Today-sync Or Wireless Don't Work!
Post by: tombraider on June 22, 2005, 06:41:35 pm
I'm struggling.  I have an Orinocco silver pcmcia card which SHOULD be plug and play with this but it doesn't recognize the card at all and if I manually try to set the Proxim1 driver (hope that's the right one),  it still says it's an unrecognizable card.

Then "Active Sync" doesn't work either....the simpad tries 5 or 6 times to connect and can't.  The Desktop Active Sync tries to connect and can't.

I'm not a happy camper.

The Sandisk Connectplus doesn't work either except as a storage card.

If your wireless card has wince drivers, did you try to install them?

I don't know if this will be helpful but just some links to explore:

Maybe you could upgrade it to WinCE.Net 4.1:

Well I hope this guy on ebay isn't selling a bunch of broken Simpads...that would make me very unhappy...

i've not been able to get my computer (or any computer, for that matter) to work with mine at all. When I plug it into a Unix-type system (my Linux box, Mac at work) it shows up with errors about the device not accepting an address...

When my simpad was running wince, I couldnt get the wireless encryption working. So I installed opensimpad.  Works fine.

I don't think they're broken just difficult to get to work with anything.
Although I HATE the doubleclick to do anything  - can that be changed?  Couldn't find a setting for it.  I went into control panel and calibrated my clicking time but I still hate it - half the time my doubleclicking doesn't register.

I finally got the ActiveSync to work by downloading the latest version of the application from [a href=\"http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync38.mspx]ActiveSync  AND going into Device Manager on my XP pc and removing the one com port that was listed there - Com 1 and rebooting the computer.  I had noticed that the desktop ActiveSync was on com 3 and the simpad was on com 1 (and the only options available were com 1 or com 2 in its setup).  So every time I want to sync I have to repeat this routine!   It doesn't matter because all my contact data is in Qtopia 1.7 or on my Zauri and I can't find the xml file for any of them (well, the Sharp ROM isn't in xml....) nor can I "sync" from Qtopia 1.7 to Microsoft Outlook (disc came with Simpad) even though Qtopia swears this is possible.  Sigh.  So there's no data to sync with the Simpad anyway.

Have looked for drivers and all I could find was this:
Client software ORiNOCO Rel 7.0 for Windows CE 2.00 & 2.10 - Spring 2001 release
Complete set of driver files and tools for MS Windows CE v2.00 and v2.10 / Handheld PC. (1.29MB) at Proxim Orinoco which I am not sure how to install - have to read the manual that came with the device. Just got this thing yesterday afternoon.  I tried extracting the file on my Windows XP pc and then moving them to the Simpad and when I click on them in the Simpad a message pops up saying, ""NETSETUP" is not a valid Windows CE application."

I KNOW the Orinoco card is plug and play with the Opensimpad install but I just want to check to see if everything works on this thing before doing anything drastic like installing a new image on it.

BTW, the listed drivers that are already installed are:
AsyncMac1 NDISWAN Adapter
CW101:PRISM 802.11 Wireless LAN Driver
NE20001 NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver
PROXIM1: Proxim PC Card Driver

Thanks for those links,  I appreciate it.
I guess I will eventually flash it to something else but right now I just want to be sure everything works.  I downloaded the WinCE.Net 4.1 just in case though.

Oh, I thought the USB was never implemented on this device and I assumed it doesn't work.

Well, if that's the case, then that would explain why it doesn't work :|

Can anybody confirm if this is true or not?

You can use these drivers to get usb-client-mode syncing to work:

[a href=\"http://www.silentservices.de/simpad/sl4-usb.zip]http://www.silentservices.de/simpad/sl4-usb.zip

but it is impossible for the usb hardware to be used for things like external keyboards or hard drives - it isn't a question of having the right software drivers - the hardware support isn't there.

Sorry, the Simpad is dead.
I've got the confirmation today at the Linuxtag at Karlruhe, Germany. Stop wasting any effort on it. Same applies to the GPE efforts on iPAQs. The search for "the" platform goes on.

It seems like the OE developers are still unsure which one is the platform to actively support from now on?

Maybe the Nokia 770. I'am just guessing.

I know it's impossible to use it as a USB host. I just want to be able to transfer files from my linux box to the dang thing without using serial...

Thanks for the link, but that's very much not what I'm looking for...

Well, I'll try it with a Windows machine to see if it works at all...but I am using opensimpad and I am using linux on my main computer...

Seems to me that my Simpad is still working, so to me, the Simpad isn't dead...maybe I'll have to do anything I want done for it myself, but that's okay...it's cheaper than buying another device that will do what I can already do with the simpad...

I think the SIMpad is great....now...I got my wireless working and my ActiveSync (serial connection).  Have internet access and email working on it.  I'm just getting used to the Jot application which really is neat.  I think I'll stick with the Win CE 3.0 which is on there for the moment.

I figured out how to install a wince.exe file through ActiveSync which was on my Orinoco cd in the "WinCE" folder - imagine that?  It was there all along.  I just assumed the drivers would have been preinstalled on the SIMpad.

Here is an excerpt from Polish website for simpad regarding USB.  It appears to contain USB drivers for various Win flavors.  I could install Win XP driver but still can't get Active Sync to work.  Can somebody translate this and give a step-by-step?

Jak podłączyć simpada poprzez USB?

Wbrew pozorom nie jest to takie proste. Najpierw należy się "wyposażyć" jeden z poniższych sterowników:
Oryginalny sterownik udostępniony przez Siemensa
[a href=\"http://simpad.pdaclub.pl/download/simpad.rar]http://simpad.pdaclub.pl/download/simpad.rar
Poprawiony sterownik dla Windows 2000
http://simpad.pdaclub.pl/download/WCEUSBSH.rar (http://simpad.pdaclub.pl/download/WCEUSBSH.rar)
Poprawiony sterownik dla WinXP
http://simpad.pdaclub.pl/download/WCEUSBSH_XP.rar (http://simpad.pdaclub.pl/download/WCEUSBSH_XP.rar)

[EDIT]  Oops, you are talking about Opensimpad and Linux.  Sorry.

I'm using it to read ebooks with opie-reader. No other handheld I know has a better screen. Battery life is better than my zaurus. Only the software is not as good as it could be (so I have a 2nd simpad with wince which I use exclusively for reading PDF)

It may be rumored dead but I'm very happy with it and I will not sell it - I really love the device. Good weight/size ratio.

I might have to switch to linux just to get a decent ebook reader...boy,  that Microsoft reader is the PITS!  It doesn't even allow you to rotate or spread the page out full screen.

I purchase microsoft ebooks and use openclit to read them with opie-reader. The very same ebook looks gorgeous on a simpad/opie-reader compared to anything else !
