Title: 2gb Sd Card
Post by: Cresho on June 24, 2005, 07:30:34 am
I don't know!

i loaded my zaurus up with everything and pure software covers 1gb (dont ask)  i need a 2 or 3 or 4 gb sd card.

I just purchased my zaurus c1000, case, poweradapter (for power USA household compatability) and it's comingwithin 2 days and i need a SD carc quick!

does anybody here use a 2gb sd card that actually works on the zaurus?  I know sandisk is making it but I have had bad expirience with them.

I've had very bad luck with SD in general... with the Zaurus.

I consider it pretty much 100% unusable as at any random time, the SD card will fail (just about completely).

That was tue on a slow card ( really -- it skips in an mp3 player ) on my 5600
on my 6000 I have had no problems with my 1g lexar on any of the 6 roms/variants that run on the
6000.

A resonably prced, working 2g would be really nice, though.

Dont you have to chance to test your card in the store or (after asking for a compatible card) ask for exchange with another brand if it doesnt work?

What is considered a "slow card" in terms of reading/writing??

I've seen this term a lot in this forum whenever SD is mentioned.

As I'm looking forward a new 1GB SD, I'm really scare about this. Are these brand new Sandisk/Kingston/Lexar cards all good in terms of read/write velocity?

Thanks.

Yes!  you are right.  I purchased a few sandisk and within a week, my sd card would die.  I would return it for another and same thing.  1 week alter and dead loosing everything but luckily i back everything up once a month to my pc via cardreader built into the box.

yes you can call it that way.  Slow is slow for reaad/write.  if you look for higher and better performing sd cards, you can really enjoy it especially if you have software installed into it.  The ones that work for me is PNY 1gb and not a freakin problem.  Just slow.  Reason why i own one is because of my sl5500.  The sd reader has a bottleneck of some kind were data flows slow so not even the fastest card in the market can remedy this.  On the other hand, the new zauruses like the c- series may not have this problem.  I don't really know cuz i havent looked into it and about to recieve one in the mailbox soon!  days i think.

There are a few points you guys may not be aware of.

1.) There is a known issue with Sandisk SD cards and the Zaurus.  NEVER use Sandisk SD cards in a Zaurus.  It'll be dead in... well... a week.  I've had good luck with PNY.

2.) The Zaurus lacks a real SD-card driver.  Always has.  The Zaurus's slot has always functioned as an MMC card slot.  The two are electrically compatible and an SD slot will "read" MMC cards.  MMC cards are slower, though.  Zaurus SD performance is, comparitively, abominable, no matter how fast the card you buy.  Sharp is not going to fix this.  Originally this was because they would have had to pay through the nose for an SD/SDIO license.  Now, since the market's not complaining, they don't have a reason to care.

3.) The SL-C760 and later have a real, hard-wired, SDIO slot.  SL-5XXX series do not.  (There's a thread about this somewhere.)  However, there is no SDIO drive.  If some of you want to write one...  :^)  You'd get a lot of well-wishers.  (Sure would be nice to be able to plug SDIO Cards in.)  Sharp... isn't going to bother...  :^(

Regards
Jomo

This is really new for me. I've been reading about Sandisk problems everywhere in this forum but nobody has stated like NEVER use them. Thanks for the tip. Does this apply to CF cards too??? I already have a Sandisk CF256MB, am I looking for trouble???

I'm in Brazil where there're limited options for SD/CF cards besides the most known brands. So I'm left with Sandisk (out), Lexar, Kingston, PQI, Corsair (rare), Dane-Elec.
Jomo and Cresho, which one would be your recommendations as for compatibility/reliability?

So you are saying that there is no difference for me, as a Sl5500 user to buy, say, a 40X or a 20X SD card? No noticeable difference at all even with different brand of cards?

Thanks!

My slow card was a 512..built a a cheapie 512 before 1 gig was even out.
My 1 gig lexar sd works fine. Afaik, lexar cards work just dandy in a Z.

Search the forums for "bonnie" (a filesystem benchmarking program) and you'll see actual benchmark results for different cards. The faster SD cards don't offer much (if any) additional performance on the Zaurus.

Thanks Kopsis!

Really very useful info, specially for a newbie like me who is trying to read and learn as much as possible. The idea of collecting reading/writing times X CPU workload is very useful to give a real good idea of SD slot x SD cards performance in different situations.

On the 5500 at least, the  thing that makes SD "slower" than CF cards is the fact that the SD card slot is only 1 bit as opposed to 16 bits for a CF card slot.

Makes a big read write difference.  However, I still would not give up my 1Gig SD card.

Hmm, are you sure you aren't overgeneralizing a bit?  I've had a 1GB SanDisk UltraII card in my C1000 for 2 months straight now (I don't think I've taken it out a single time since first inserting it), and it is fine.  I host most of my software on it, along with numerous music/movie/book files.

My lexar 1G - not the newer high speed one - works fine!
