i have had a several affairs with the zaurus starting with the 5000d, each foray has ended with me being slightly frustrated. i sold the last z i owned, a c750, a year ago. i cant stay away from these things though, i just ordered a c1000. unlike last year, i actually need a reliable PDA now (i am no longer a CS student free to hack all day). what do people think is the most reliable ROM to use? reliable meaning i can use it for more than a week without re-flashing. also what would you consider as a stable 802.11 card? i would love to hear from someone who uses their zaurus daily, and has not reflashed the ROM lately. thanks.

if you're an end-user, cacko is pretty good, pretty stable, either in lite or full form - gives you access to all the Sharp applications, as well as many 3rd party ones. I'm on cacko full, I did have a brief foray into cacko-lite, came back to full, been with it since I first owned a Z three months ago.
best wlan card is the socket/symbol (usually quite affordable on ebay)
if you're a hard-core developer, OZ seems to be best. I've not tried it out.

I'm stuck on OZ 3.2 on my SL5500 as I've managed to get it doing what I need, and don't have time to experiment with the ball-ache of getting the right combination of software installed.
I use it for:
1. playing MP3s (mplayer does the job)
2. Reading pdf docs (qpdf2)
Docs/mp3s are dumped onto a CF card using a PC card reader as that appears to be the fastest and least hassle way.
I would love to use it for:
1. composing emails to be fired off when I get in range of a hotspot
2. GPS/route planning in the UK.
3. VOIP/instant messaging
4. General PDA functionality.
But for one reason or another I have given up on these options (poor software, flaky network connectivity, esp. to WEP).
Maybe later versions of OZ are better, but I doubt from reading around that they are any more stable.

thanks for the advice, it looks like i might be out of luck though. am i right that the sharp rom is my only real choice? cacko does not seem to be released for the c1000 and the things you say you have given up on with OZ are the things i need. too bad. i have been praying for the day OZ becomes dependable for years, maybe it will come soon.

Is there a qtopia 2.1 for the 1000? That might be worth a try.
PdaXrom is great. I think the pim doesn't do alarms at the moment, though (or something like that).
Try OZ for your self and see... it seems to vary a bit from model to model.

stick with the default one
1. use ko/pi for pims
2. you can play video and audio with zplayer at full res
3. it has a good mp3 player but zplayer can play mp3's as well
4. look down at my signature and zaurusthemes.org. go to themes. I am changing the whole look of the default zaurus...should be ready within a day or so.
lots of stuff you can install. i already have some excellent paint and p[icture editing tools on it as well.
if your not a developer or a heavy user, stick with the default.

I think they're all reasonably stable once you learn what the rough edges are. Out of the box, the Sharp roms and Cacko have the least edges. They're really high quality stable roms, ideal for business apps.
I'm running Hentges 3.5.3 with a kernel update now. Now that I've figured out the rough edges (and admittedly there aren't many now that I have the new kernel), I'm a much happier Z user. In fact, I sync with my Linux desktop at work and Mac Mini at home.
There is OZ for the C1k available, but personally, I'd be waiting until at least a 2nd version was available.
