I\'m expecting to be flamed for this, but I hope you all dont mind me saying that I just cannot understand why people always name OZ as an answer/alternative to most QT problems.
I\'ve installed a number of OZ releases and always found them awkward, to say the least.
OZ has never cut the mustard for me, and it\'s always appeared to be in a state of \"the next release will be perfect\", but it never is. Infact there\'s never a really stable useable version.
Also there has never been a definative release of any version of OZ and to be honest I cant be bothered to struggle with it ever again.
I\'m not a newbie to o/s and have no problems with Debiian (my chosen platform) Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake or what ever. So there really shouldn\'t be any surprises, but OZ now leaves me cold.
I dont mean to deminish all the hard work done by the OZ crew in any way, but can somebody explain to me why the definitive answer to so many questions we see on the boards is \"OZ\".
I\'ve been Zaurised since my very early SL5000d and lived through 5500 and now C760 so it\'s not a new game to me.
Just cant see it.
Respectfully

I agree totally. I\'ve tried OZ on numerous occasions and I just can\'t get it to work \"right\". It always seems to be in flux and the apps I need (Hancom in particular) are very hit or miss. I need my \"mobile tool\" to work, not something to be tinkered with constantly.
-
Well, the reason is that OZ, while it has it\'s short comings, DOES fix almost every qtopia related issue people have.
There\'s more apps as virtualy all qtopia software works and there is a good deal of \'Opie only\' software available.
It has true \'on-the-fly\' rotation, something not available on ans qtopia based rom except those built with qtopia 1.6.2 and I\'ve never seen a 1.6.2 rom that even good enough to be called half-assed. The closest you can get on a sharp based rom is restarting topia every time you want to rotate.
OZ is also capable of syncing flawlessly with a linux desktop, something that is absolutely impossible with any of the current sharp or sharp based roms.
Being open source, it offers the ability for those who are so inclined to modify it far more than you can modify a qtopia rom.
It has the ability to use extra themes without buying extra software.
I could keep going, but I think i\'ve hit all the best points.
I can understand it not working for a particular person, but it does off many advantages for most people.

Can\'t add much to VeeDubbs explanation but one thing: Some people also just prefer to use a fully open source linux distribution because they want to be able to have it become whatever they have in mind. OpenZaurus can be as good or bad as \"the community\" wants it to be.
-
My reasons for using OZ are that it\'s
a. 100% independent of Sharp or any other sponsor, and
b. good enough
I have many gripes against OZ but I feel it\'s actually worth to voice my complaints, more so than with any other ROM, precisely because it has a wide momentum.

I used OZ for about a day and then went back to the Sharp ROM because of the old documents tab.
-
I don\'t use OZ, although I have it on a dest zaurus ...
I would always prefer OZ over sharp, though... simply because it is open source.
it won\'t die when the company decides it doesn\'t want to support it anymore --
it will only die when no USERS are left who still want to support it.

I agree there. The new sharp Doc\'s tab IS great. Though to be honest, I have goten to REALY like the file manager in Opie. Although for me,. the other things I listed are so great that the Doc\'s tab pales in comparison.
-
I think the point is that the doc tab can be added to Opie (and I think that this is planned).
Opie is being actively developed which is more than can be said for Sharp\'s Qtopia which some people are still running.

Many thanks to you all for your responses.
Some good points there especialy as Sharp appear to be \"dropping the viper\" - by which I mean Sharps probable imminent abandon of the developers board.
I didn\'t ever mean to deminish anybodys valuable input but I thought it was worth the question as I always have found OZ difficult.
However poiniently we may all be crying out for new OZ releases in the future, bearing in mind the way things appear to be progressing.
Also as syncing is so valuable to us all a comment from tkc would be welcomed
Thanks Micky

Oops and while I\'m at it, isn\'t it very handy for sharp, or very just slightly convenient that most users appear to have moved from ZDev to ZUG.
Not that I believe in conspiracy theory.
No insult intended OFRG - but can I have a cut - lol
You know I don\'t mean it.

lol... \'a cut\'? you want a cut of what? i wish sharp was giving me things
other than spencer cleaning out his drawers before he left sharp and giving me 2 of the 3 Zs for the doc contest, I don\'t get didly from sharp.
hmmm... you\'re on my shit list now saiten... just kidding
-
Dam I hate to be on anybody\'s shit list but by my nature it happens to me all the time so I expect it ;-)
Have to admit that I always giggle when people loose their rag, I just cant stop winding people up !! I think it\'s an addiction.
However personaly I always found that \'Spencers\' predicesor (mike) was so amazingly helfull and so much more knowlegable.
But Spencer did his best and big thanks to him.
Bless ;-)

saiten: you never did say what about OZ you don\'t like.
i installed OZ 2 weeks after i got my Zaurus and i\'ve never had a Sharp ROM on since. OZ does everything i want it to, and there\'s nothing i want it to do that it can\'t. (ok pptp with a working mppe would be nice)
what about OZ is it that \"leaves you cold\"?

Since \"Constructive\" comments are permitted
My big \'problem\' with OZ when I tried it (a couple of months back) was things were too small. I\'m talking for the C7xx models. I little tricky hitting the target as it were for clsing apps etc., possible also because it always detected some movement as well, not sure.
Anyway, since OZ is/was mostly geared at the 55/56xx models, and C7xx support is mostly experimental, it is not exactly surprising. But thought I\'d add something constructive to the topic

I can use anything but OpenZaurus because it\'s the only ROM that lets me remove things. After using OZ for a while I went back to the Sharp ROM when I was frustrated with xmms not working (long time ago) and I couldn\'t stand having all the extra applications(help, games I didn\'t like, media player) on there taking up my space. Whenever I flash to OZ I go in and remove as much as I can. That frees up internal space for the things that I think are necessary. For example xmms and vnc server. (Most of the other apps I remove and then reinstall to my SD card) Also I have had much more luck finding help when it comes to problems with OZ than I have had with the Sharp ROM.
For the record I have a 5500.
-
i think tkcrom comes with almost no apps installed and runs on the 5500...
