Title: Book Reader Software
Post by: daniel3000 on July 06, 2005, 10:46:40 am
Hello,

I'm interested in reading some classical literature (ancient greek literature in german or English translations and the classical german literature) on the C3000.

What's the best option for reader software and for a source for the literature itself?

Would be great to be able tu use both screen orientation modes of the C3000, as situation allows.

Thanks

daniel

The best ebook reader I've used on the Z is opie-reader, I've used it on C760, C860 and C1K models.

Works great for plucker, mobipocket, text, html and palm doc formats.

Not sure about German literature, but there is some classical stuff available at Project Gutenburg, also try out Memoware.com for a lot of free ebboks

What about Justreader? Anyone knows how it works for clamshell models?
I am using it for reading palm doc format on 5500.

JustReader works fine on my C750. So it should work on all clamshells. Have also a look on the FBReader.

Can anyone provide a link or links to a list of free or commercial ebooks that opie-reader will work with?

Thanks,

gdog,

Do you want ebooks or ebook formats?

If you want ebook formats have a look at the opie-reader homepage (http://www.timwentford.uklinux.net/)

If you want ebooks themselves then

Free
http://www.gutenberg.org/ (http://www.gutenberg.org/)
http://www.memoware.com/ (http://www.memoware.com/) -stay away from the isilo ones, they are often isilox
http://www.craphound.com/ (http://www.craphound.com/) - currently my favorite ebook author
http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/ebooks/ (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/ebooks/)
http://manybooks.net/ (http://manybooks.net/)

Commercial
http://www.pdabookstore.com/ (http://www.pdabookstore.com/) - MultiFormat only, unless you want to use clit to un-DRM Secure MS Reader ebooks
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/brows...8583241-9189459 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/551440/103-8583241-9189459) - again you'll probably need to use clit or some other DRM remover first

Sorry don't have much of a commercial list, mainly cause there is so much free stuff out there.

If your tastes run to sci-fi or fantasy, try Baen for your zaurus friendly commercial books. They are a good net citizen in that they don't use DRM. I've heard this is why their books don't pop up too much in places like usenet. (My old peanutpress DRM ebooks I had for my Palm didn't survive the transition to the Zaurus -- i.e., they don't work).

Plus with Baen, you can download as rtf, html (not single file), mobibook, and some others. Mobibook works great in opie-reader. You can also convert yourself the rtf to a single html file or text. The html files can also be converted to plucker with the right utility.

I've purchased and read some great books from Baen.

Baen's Free Commercial books: [a href=\"http://www.baen.com/library/defaultTitles.htm]http://www.baen.com/library/defaultTitles.htm
Baens list of books for purchase: http://www.webscriptions.net/ (http://www.webscriptions.net/)

Project gutenberg for large collection (16,000 books) of public domain books: http://www.gutenberg.org/ (http://www.gutenberg.org/)

If your tastes run to public domain Christian religious texts, try:  http://ccel.org/ (http://ccel.org/)   Their Palm formatted books work quite well with opie-reader.

You can go on IRC on any Undernet channel and join #bookz to download thousands and thousands of free ebooks.  Even latest best sellers.  Type in @find nameofbook or author and send.  The Opera browser will do it all within the browser itself so you don't need a separate utility...it also does RSS within itself.  Very neat.  I use Opera for email also so I only have to use one software utility for everything.

Edit: to clarify...I mean Opera browser on my Windows XP PC NOT the Opera  browser on the Zaurus.

Don't be afraid...I've never had a bad experience doing this and have never gotten a virus of any kind on my computer.  (knock wood)

WoW. It'll take me a week of my free time to get through the replies that the three of you provided. Thank you!

For what it's worth I like most anything, though scifi is not as attractive to me as it once was.

Stu,
I don't know what the difference is between ebooks and ebook formats....

What I'm truly looking for are some of the Classics (Moby Dick, To Kill a Mockingbird, Captains Courageous, etc), that I can read with opie-reader I guess.

Thanks,

gdog

Gdog,

By ebooks, I meant the actual file that you download and put on your Z. See links above.
Ebook formats, I meant to refer to the format of downloaded file, text file, html file, plucker file, MS Reader lit file etc. Opie-Reader works with most of the unsecured formats (non-DRM), but plucker and html are my favorites (plucker over html just for size reasons).

Project Gutenburg is probably your best place to look for classics and they are generally in text or html format and work without problems with opie-reader.

If you can't find the book you want easily on the lists above, give me a bell, I probably have it sitting on my hard disk from the ebook download frenzy I went on when I first got my Z. Currently have around 700 ebooks that I'm working my way through.

Thank you Stu! I visited many sites last night in getting started. This one was the one that I ended up downloading 6 or 7 from, (http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/titles.html), though I'd like to find more. Being so new to eBook reading I chose to download what I did in html files because when created by chapter they are of a more manageable size, and I can then build a section on my documentation menu for them.

Does opie-reader do a more sophisticated job of collating and presenting them than Opera can when they are in html format?

Thank you for your offer. If you have any by Hemingway or John Masters and would like to share them, or point me to where they can be found I'd appreciate it. Another good read is "The Far Pavillions" my M.M. Kaye. She also had another good one though the name eludes me at the moment. 'The Captains and the Kings" or anything else by Taylor Caldwell, such as "Dynasty of Death" are also top-notch novels that I would very much like to find in some etext format that my Z could read.

Best Regards,

gdog

Using html for ebooks on a PDA is not the best choice for a variety of reasons. You would be much better off using, for example, [a href=\"http://www.plkr.org]Plucker or rbmake (http://rbmake.sourceforge.net/) to convert the set of html files to a single file which has all the links already resolved.

If you really want to view html then opera is the better choice though it won't support things like bookmarks etc., and it has to load the whole file into memory making reading large documents impossible. Plucker, rbmake and Mobipocket all process the files to some extent making it possible to render the file on the fly and making random access much faster.

I get a connection refused when trying to connect to that ip. Do you have an actual URL? Captains and the Kings is a great read. I don't know what an IRC undernet is

Thanks,
