I'd love to see Gaim running on the Z with the features below added...
1) Multiple tabbed chat windows
2) Configurable sounds for alerts
3) Away message support.
I think that with the addition of these features, the Z would gain yet another tractor app. Gaim is *almost there* on the Z, but the missing features above would bring it close enough to the mainstream version of Gaim to be a very useful communications tool.
My hat's off to the Opie team for really upping the ante on Gaim for Zaurus. If we could get one more push we'd be there.
Best Regards,
Randall.

Gaim i scertainly a very attractive program for the zaurus. However, I have some problems with it. May I join this thread and ask some questions?
* Sometimes all the icons disappear. I have read about that problem and there is said to be a fixed libpng which should fix that error. however, before I wanted to install the fixed libpng, the icons reappeared magically. So I didn't install that libpng and wait for the next occurrence. Does anyone know the reason for this behaviour?
* Conversation (i.e. instant messaging) does not seem to work with some of my "buddies", and with others it works flawlessly (all of them are ICQ "buddies", I have also tried one AOL buddy, there it also doesn't seem to work).
Could the reason be that I am behind a NAT firewall? But I have set the some ports for ICQ (I think 24000-24500) on the router to be forwarded to the Zaurus' IP. That way it worked with licq under Linux. And it's strange that it works for SOME buddies but not for all... Which ports does Gaim use?
I remember licq having an option "I am behind a NAT" or similar. Does anyonne know what this option does? Is that feature implemented in Gaim, too?
Any ideas?
Thanks
daniel

I'm using the 'normal' version on GAIM on my Z, and it works seems to have all the features you just mentioned.

Where did you get it from? I've tried the 'normal' Gaim on OZ/GPE, OZ/Opie, and SharpROM and in all cases Yahoo and MSN authentication were both broken. I'd love to find a working version.... (by normal, I mean the version that lives at qpe-gaim.sourceforge.net.)
Thanks in advance.

Well, 'normal' GAIM is per definition at gaim.sf.net. Anyway, you'll probably need to install the protocol plugins ('ipkg install gaim-protocol-msn') to get msn working. I can confirm msn, irc and jabber work with the stock GAIM from the OZ feed (and Familiar feeds too)

the qpe-gaim is kinda obsolete, I thought.
The one in pdaX seems fine, and I'm sure koen is telling the truth about OZ being fine too.
I think both are just compiled from current "normal" gaim sources.

Ok, I'm admittedly a bit confused now. Here's what I've learned, and remaining questions. Please let me know if any of this doesn't jive with your info...
The normal Gaim is at [a href=\"http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php]http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php[/url] however there is no reference to any embedded versions, so I'm assuming that it can't easily be installed on a Z. It is geared to full Linux distros (FC, Debian, etc..)
There is an embedded version of Gaim at http://qpe-gaim.sourceforge.net/ (http://qpe-gaim.sourceforge.net/) which although installable on the Z requires a nasty symlink workaround, and does not support current MSN or Yahoo protocols. I don't know if the other features work as the protocol issues were a show-stopper for me. There have been no updates to the packages since 2003 or so, and development activity seems to be nil.
The version of Gaim that is in OZ/Opie 3.5.3 feed is a modified version of qpe-gaim, supports Yahoo, AIM, MSN, but not tabbed chat windows or away (status) messages. Sound alert works, but the sound is not configurable.
The version of Gaim that is in the OZ/GPE 3.5.3 feed... <here's where I need help>
(1) Does it support AIM, MSN and Yahoo?
(2) Does it have multiple tabbed chat windows?
(3) Does it support sound alerts? Are they configurable?
(4) Does it support away (status) messages?
Thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention the pdaX one, but yes, both are built from the regular sources and work fine with all the protocols. It's the same gaim that's one your workstation.
