Hello,
is there a good alternative to Hancom Sheet? Hancom has its disadvantages, which makes it inconvenient to use (e.g. zoom mode is not saved on exit, no recent files list, no macro support...
So I would be interested in an alternative; preferaly a QTopia graphical application, but I culd also use a console program, as I'm used to use Lotus 1-2-3 on a 200LX. ;-)
I asked the people from Softmaker if they plan to release a Planmaker Zaurus version, but they have other priorities at the moment, so this may take some years.
Thank you
daniel

I feel your pain Daniel. A spreadsheeet app on par with what Softmaker claims Textmaker to be would truly make the Z a viable laptop replacement imho.
Have you tried TextMaker from Softmaker yet? Is it all they claim it is?

some 3k users have open office running in debian. certainly a powerful option.
Also, gnumeric runs on xqt and x based distros

Do you know how to run gnumeric on X/QT?

I have tried (and bought) TextMaker. It is a great application, able to edit all Word-DOCs so far which I had to edit on the Zaurus. But I didn't tried it very extensively yet, so I cannot confirm it really is as powerful as they say.
But it seems to be the most powerful MS Word compatible word processor avaliable for Linux and Windows.

Thanks for the pointer.
However, I would prefer a program which does not need X. May even be a comsole application.
Is there a way to start X-based applications together with a stripped-down X or X/QT without the need of starting the X environment forst in a separate step and then under X the X app?
I mean in a way that it is transparent to the user: Simply tap an icon or invoke a command and the entire thing starts.

That's exactly what my xlauncher wrapper script does.

Aha - IIRC you planned to put together a all-in-one IPK for X/QT. Is this package available already? If yes, is it documented? Does it contain the wrapper script?
And: How long does e.g. Openoffice need to come up using that setup?
thanks

Thanks for the feedback Daniel. I've been contemplating purchasing it, especially at the price they have it available for. I use a lot of word docs in my notes, and while Hancom does a decent job I wouldn't mind having a tool that does a better one.
Just by chance have you noticed whether or not it warns you or balks at opening larger files as much as Hancom Word does?
Thanks!

If you can get meanie's debian working on your z, then your in for a treat with openoffice. I havent been able to on my c1000 cuz of my space problems. Meanie has a 4gb harddisk were as i have only 128 on main memory.
if you have a c3000, go for meanie's option.

I seriously recommend installing X/QT + Debian + OpenOffice on your Z
It's been a real boon to me. I've got all my documents now on there. Ok they are slow to open, but it's impressive and people I've shown can't believe it.
Put a C1000 next to a standard Pocket PC, show it's user a full formatted word or excel document and they'll say wow.

Well, I'm not looking for a solution to impress my colleagues, but for a solution I can work with.
I can probably live with a slow start of Openoffice, but how about reaction and processing time of Openoffice after the start? Is it reasonable? If I write text fluently, does Openoffice eat it all, or do I have to stop in order to wait for openoffice to receive the characters? That would be a no-go for me.
Thanks

That was just a for instance of how great it is to be able to run this on such a small device.

Once you've opened the document and gotten into it, it's fine, there's a little delay when you access menus and their dialog boxes.
If all you are doing is writing text, then use hancom word, it's way faster.
If you want to view a fully formatted document, edit that document, apply new formatting, type new things, this solution is excellent. I was able today, during my commute, to open and make edits to a 20 page document without having to drag a laptop out of my bag on the london underground. Ok it wasn't the fastest way to do it, the laptop would have been severely more capable of doing these edits, but I was in a crowded tube train, I had to stand at first, and the whole time I was working away. Now THAT is convenience and that's the benefit of this.

Thanks, sounds good. I will try it after my vacation, i.e. end of next week.
