Title: sl-5600 cant boot after opie packages
Post by: bozzio2004 on January 31, 2004, 09:41:50 pm
I have sl-5600 (sharp rom) and tried to install some opie packages. The zaurus boots but I keep getting wait 1 (please wait for 1 minute).
 Warning.. kernel -module version mismatch
/usr/local/bin/kbdsim.o was compiled for kernel version 2.46-rmk1-np2-embedix while the kernel 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embeddix.

I upgraded the rom to 1.32 thinking (hoping) this would clear the software , and I could simply do a restore back of a previous image. Nada. didnt. I can\'t get into the backup/restore as this just goes up and down.

The only way to stop it, is to move the battery cover switch to try to power it off. Very frustrating! Makes you not want to try to install packages as it doesnt give errors while it installs, you think it works but nope. And I installed directly from sharp opie for the sharp.

THanks for any help you can provideh

Basically I think you need OpenZaurus, not Qtopia (which comes from Sharp), and there isn\'t a version of OZ for the 5600 yet.

I\'m a noob and could be wrong, but I believe Opie is the OZ gui, Qtopia is the Sharp gui.

My bad... OZ is available for the 5600 (it might not usable yet)

Well not sure about opie. it said it worked for it.. In any event, I formatted the drive with maintenance menu, and then did a restore, then continued onwards. THanks for replying though

What did you install? Some kind of keyboard related program and driver it would appear.

If you can get this package from one of the latest feeds (3.3.5 onwards) which are now using the same kernel version as you (the number is the same, I think the letters are but can\'t check at the moment) then you might be able to get it working.

Hi,
actually I did pull from latest feed. Thats why it was so confusing. I need to do some more detail checking I guess. Is there a writeup from anyone who has gotten opie working on sharp rom to see which packages are critical, etc --] and how you can tell which kernel they relate to!!!

Thanks

What\'s the path to the feed?

This is the latest 5600 feed (http://openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.3.5/SL5600/) but it used GCC3 so you will probably not be able to get anything in it to work.

You might be able to get stuff from here: http://openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/collie/ipks/ (http://openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/collie/ipks/)

to work as it\'s GCC2, but it is for a different machine, so no guarantees.

Good luck,

Si

You know there is a dedicated feed for Opie for the SharpROM? http://opie.handhelds.org/feed/sharprom (http://opie.handhelds.org/feed/sharprom)

You can\'t (well... you shouldn\'t) just install packages from arbitrary feeds not matching your linux distribution and expect things to work.

I did install from the sharp rom feed.. It was a kernel mismatch as I indicated previously. I wouldnt install a package for open zaurus to a sharp rom unless it said it was cross platform.

kbdsim.o is in the VNC Server package and has nothing to do with the problem. You probably installed an Opie package that overwrote some Qtopia specific app, applet and library that was incompatible and caused Qtopia to crash.

If you want to debug this, press the \'/?\' keyboard key after a reboot when you get the \'Wait 1.. 2.. 3..\' prompt. Then press \'a\' and login as root. With vi or some other editor, comment out line 36 of /home/QtPalmtop/qpe.sh and uncomment line 37. Then save this, quit the editor and type \'exit\'. This will log all the messages from Qtopia in /home/zaurus/log.<date> and should show you what is causing Qtopia to crash like this.

It seems there are still some Qtopia incompatible packages in the OPIE Sharp ROM feed.

I have the same problem as bozzio2004.  I\'ve been using my new SL-5600 for almost 2 weeks now, and tonight I installed 2 opie packages that were for the Sharp ROM.  One was opie-tinykate, and the other was opie-taskbar.  When I installed the packages, it gave me the warning that some dependancies were missing.  But I closed the Add/Remove programs anyway, thinking I could figure out what I needed later.  However, as soon as I closed the Add/Remove software, my Zaurus went into reboot mode by itself, and now it never gets past the \"Please wait for approximately 1 minute... \" screen.  I hope I can figure out how to fix it without formating my internal flash, as I have a lot of info in my machine that wasn\'t saved through Qtopia Desktop.  I should do a system backup more often, I guess.

This should be a FAQ...

1) When you get the Wait 1.. 2... 3... prompt before Qtopia starts, press the \'/?\' key on the keyboard.
2) Then press \'a\' to get a login prompt.
3) Then enter \'root\' as the username (without the quotes) and the root password when prompted. (If you have set a passcode in the Qtopia security app then the root password is the same as that. Otherwise it is blank so just hit Return)
4) At the command prompt, type:
ipkg remove <offending package name>
In your case this is probably:
ipkg remove opie-taskbar
5) Type \'reboot\' and press Return

Thanks.  I removed all of the opie packages that I installed, but I still cannot start Qtopia.  It seems that the opie packages changed something that cannot be restored by removing them?  What would that be?  I will continue to debug, looking at the log file.

Looking at the log file, all I see is this:

runqpe:  execv(/home/QtPalmtop/bin/qpe) failed!
errno = 2

Pretty cryptic, huh?     Any ideas?

Try running /home/QtPalmtop/bin/qpe from the command line and see what it says.

Drop to that console again, login as root and type the following commands:

cd /
tar xvf /root/.home_default.tar home/QtPalmtop/bin
tar xvf /root/.home_default.tar home/QtPalmtop/lib
tar xvf /root/.home_default.tar home/QtPalmtop/plugins
exit

That should restore most if not all Sharp Qtopia apps and libraries without wiping any data out.

Looks like /home/QtPalmtop/bin/qpe no longer exists, as it must have been overwritten by one of the opie packages I installed.  How  do I get it back in there?  Hopefully it\'s still easy to do file transfers from my PC without Qtopia.  Question is, where do I download qpe from?  I guess I also need to make sure to obtain the correct version of qpe.

That last suggestion did the trick!!  I\'m back up and running.  Thanks!
