I asked this somewhere in a thread about emulation, but I suspect that either nobody wants to emulate a mac on their pdaXrom, or that the thread had got tired and had run its course.
Anyway, I remember getting Basilisk working on my 5500 before it died. I would really like to do the same for my 860, but with the pdaXrom of course. Better still might be Sheepshaver.
I know that we are talking max OS8 for Basilisk and OS9 (I read somewhere) for Sheepshaver, but I know the 860 is more powerful than the mac I first ran Quark Xpress on. That would be so cool...
Anybody able to help?
And while I am asking, as both Basilisk and Sheepshaver are limited to 'Classic' mac OS, would Appletalk work if the ethernet worked?
Thanks
J
PS. Having a Z I could stick Quark on would be cool. Scribus (native to the Z, not emulated) would be really great (better) too!
-
Er... that's a No then?
Could it be that pdaXrom users aren't at all interested in emulating a mac?
Just for clarity, I used OS7 on a mac with a 40 mb hard disk, a 12 inch screen (ie., less than 600x480 pxels) and with 10 mb RAM.
Got to be worth a try, even if only to play Marathon (which it did)
My SL5500 emulated the boot process into the Finder OK, but only seeing a quarter of the screen wasn't much use.
-
I am interested.

You can see what was possible on a 5500 here (download link is dead):
http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=615 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=615)
And also obviously why you couldn't really do anything useful with it due to the screen dimensions. But such limitations would not apply to a clamshell version.
If anyone could give us a lead it would be appreciated.

I did a lot of searching, and found this:
http://www.areanine.gr.jp/~nyano/download.html#basil (http://www.areanine.gr.jp/~nyano/download.html#basil)
Which is where to download zbasiliskii
There is a lot of stuff in japanese that I don't understand, and links to a feed that I don't know if I need stuff from...
Further, there is this
zbasilisk
basilisk [zbasiliskii_0.3_arm.ipk] also works on the Z. Since I already have BasiliskII running on my PC, I simply copied the whole MacOS7.hfv file and the ROM image to the Z and then loaded zbasilisk. It launches X/Qt and runs from within it. zbasilisk emulates the Mac just like basilisk does on the PC, although slower and without sound.
If you want to emulate the Mac on the Zaurus, install BasiliskII on your PC and download the free MacOS7 binaries. Then create a hfv disk image with HFVExplorer (200MB should be enough) and copy the MacOS7.5.3 installer binaries onto the disk image. Then create a MacOS boot disk and start basilisk booting from the floppy. Once booted, install MacOS7.5.3. You might then want to upgrade to MacOS 7.5.5
at
http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom.html#emulators (http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom.html#emulators)
I also have an hfv file and a mac rom, which I copied.
When I install Package manager says
Idconfig:
/usr/lib/libesd.so.0 is not a symbolic link
Idconfig:
/usr/lib/audiofile.so.0 is not a symbolic link
But it says it installed, so I open aterm and type:
/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/basil
The configuration window opens and I locate my mac rom and the hfv file, and a few other settings...
I select start
The mac window opens with a grey background, the aterm messages scroll about not being able to open the floppy or cd drive, then basilisk quits with this message:
relocation error: /opt/QtPalmtop/bin/basil: undefined symbol: __modsi3
I have tried various settings in the configuration window, but I always get this same error.
Any ideas? I might add that maybe zbasiliskii doesn't like my hfv file (works on a pc) cos it is a mac OS 8 system.
I am away this week, so someone please have a go!
Thanks

Too bad you can't run PearPC on your Z....

Uuuugh, PearPC is terrible! It's like trying to install Vista to a 286! What's the point? You can buy a mini for less than I bought my 6000!
-
Relax, BarryW!!
If you looked at my emoticons, you'd see I was joking...
Just thought that it would be fun to walk into an Apple Store with OSX displayed
on my my lil' C3K....

Just joking again....

According to handtops.com a mini powerbook is in the works, maybe even not that much bigger than a Zaurus! :-)
Now that would be awesome.

Never happen. Uncle Steve doesn't like the formfactor. He also hates pdas in general. Wants everything to be cell phone based.

Ok it's old new, but a lot of Mac Rumours seem to come true. The Mini Mac was a rumour for ages and people scoffed and yet, it appeared.
If a mini PowerBook did appear, as a Mac user, I'd switch to it.

Still here for now...
Here is the translation of the japanese text:
Macintosh emulator Basilisk II In order to move with SL Zaurus making use of X/Qt, being something which the package is done again to do, it does Apple Macintosh Emulator for the Sharp Zaurus Version 0.3. The thing of X/Qt that tries does not understand and can start also the て in the idea contest one shot. Basilisk II operational picture * Basilisk II for Zaurus 0.3 (ipk type package file) Because it designates that it moves with X/Qt as prerequisite, please install the below-mentioned package beforehand. Furthermore, as for the setting regarding X/Qt altogether there is no necessity. It just installs it is all right. Part by mistake being to be, it corrected (2004/04/06) * X/Qt server xqt-server and xlibs * X/Qt client xbase-etc, xbase-clients * GTK+ tool kit gtk and glib-additional In addition, because the file which sucks out ROM image from stock Macintosh becomes necessary, please prepare the page of Basilisk II of the birthplace or the Basilisk II information of Tanaka 俊 light in reference. Because as for OS being gratuitous from Apple, there is a Kanji talk 7.5 version 7.5.3 and the like which is offered, converting to the available image file with Basilisk, II please prepare. The library which is necessary to for Basilisk II to operate, (XFree86-libs, esound, audiofile and libstdc++) everything it is included in this package, but in regard to libstdc++ because Agawa it is open as a single unit as the prerequisite library of MPlayer W100, when this it is jointly used, please make sure to install Agawa libstdc++ afterwards.
Seems I should have installed a few things first. Anyone know if I install whether they will mess with my Z?

BarryW, you're right about ol' Stevo hating PDA's...
Unfortunately, he associates them with his nemesis, Scully who championed the Newton and booted Steve out of Apple..... seems he's never gotten over that and thus always squashes anything that reminds him of a PDA....
Too bad, as I loved my MP2100 and with a few more revs it would have been really great...
What I had hoped for was Apple to release their version of a TabletPC- clamshell convertible style (form-wise like our little Zauruses) - running OSX - usable either a laptop with keyboard or as a slate with handwriting recognition. Unfortunately, seems it won't happen with Stevo around....
Oh well..........

Which really sucks, I'd buy a tablet mac the second it was released! Closest thing we can get to is rdesktop or vnc. That doesn't even work too well.

I'll let you know what they say, hns...
Who knows maybe I'll be able to show to ol' Stevo himself, as he lives near the Palo Alto, Calfornia store that I go to....would be interesting to see his reaction!...

Haha!
I have actually seen Stevo in the downtown Palo Alto store a couple times...
Good Luck! (Show the people at the genius bar, usually they have a bit of a clue)

Well, maybe you should show him, Cody!..
I've never seen him there in all the times I've been in there... just my
luck I guess...
As for the 'genius's'....you're right they usually are OK....

Er... I'd still like to know if I can get basilisk or the like running. It exits with a single error message mentioned previously... getting that smiley mac face going with the little extensions loading feels so near, and yet so far.
