Title: 2gb Sd Card On An Sl-c860
Post by: David-San on August 02, 2005, 11:01:12 am
I have a Sandisk 2Gb SD Ultra II card which does'nt seem to be recognized by my SL-C860.

- when inserted in the SD slot it freezes the QTopia GUI until aborting the detection
- it was first formatted in FAT, and then in FAT32 (same problem for both format)
- "fdisk" does'nt find the correponding SD device

Does somebody have experienced a similar problem ?

THX

I have read something about atp, and now this one not workig at all.

yes.  So far, zaurus has problems with 2gb sd cards.  Since PNY and ATP (the sales men told me atp and pny are same manufacturer or something and i really dont want to believe), my next step is a lexar 2gb.

I almost purchased the sandisk 2gb for testing purpouses.

ill take your information as verification.
thanks

I just came back from frys

i tried 2 brands

liberty high speed 133 2gb
pqi high speed 133 2gb

both failed and killed my zaurus sd slot or driver.  i tried sticking my old sd card in and crashed y system.  so the only answer left was to do a fflash restore and it fixed my driver for sd again.

thumb typing excuse my grammer.

the only brands left i can think of is
pny
lexar
simpletech

these brands need to be explored for 2gb

I've got a C1000 with Cacko ROM 1.23b and tried 4 different 2Gb SD cards.  Here are their brands and the number that cat /proc/driver/mmcsd/00/manufacture tells.

Apacer 2Gb 150x    - 30
Kingmax 2Gb 150x - 30
ATP 2Gb - 29
A-Data 2Gb  - 29

None of them is compatible with my Zaurus. Cards with manufacturer 30 can be read with great difficulties. They cause kernel panics and break normal operation of the kernel. Cards with manufacturer 29 lock up the device until I remove them.

My conclusion was that Zaurus SD card driver is horrible piece of crap.
Try MMC or even MMCPlus if it can be used with newer Zaurii.

BTW. Transcend 1Gb - 28 works nicely but is too small.

has anyone been able to recompile a new driver or do something maybe?

Edit: i dont mind trying to recompile a new kernel/edit the driver if anyone could point me to where to get the source/how to install the newly compiled kernel

Yes, I've heard that SD I/O relies on an extra software layer for Digital Rights Media stuff that can cause all sorts of problems, and that MMC cards don't have this (this also has the side-effect that MMC cards have slightly more real capacity than SD cards of the same nominal capacity).

There are quite a few 2Gb MMC cards available and I would love to have this kind of capacity on my Z, but I haven't found any sources of these cards near where I live where I could walk in and try one out. If anyone has any experience with these, please post.

The cheapest one I've seen is the ADATA/Samsung one (on various traders on ebay). I've also seen a 3G MMC by Microdia (http://www.microdia.com), but I don't know of any retailers yet.

In principle, MMCPlus should be backwards-compatible with standard MMC and SD devices - you just won't get the increased read/write speed that MMCPlus offers in a MMC slot because the extra connectors on the card aren't used.

Regards,
P.

A-Data 4GB 200x MMCplus card (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=14653)

Test some smaller MMCplus first! They are much cheaper than SDs.
I think these bigger MMC cards will be all MMCplus...

anyone got any news about this?
I'm beginning to find my lexar 1GB card a bit tight for space, and can't decide whether to risk going for a bigger card, or stick with a safe option of another 1Gb... or simply buy a C3100 and thereby forego the whole problem.

Add the Transcend 2 GB SD Card to the list of SD cards not supported by the Zaurus. Based on what is posted here, it appears that the SD driver for the Zaurus does not support cards greater than 1GB.
Although there has been some dicussion that a different ROM or Linux kernel might have an updated SD driver, I have seen no evidence that such a thing exists.
Does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts about how or when 2GB SD card support will become a reality?

The SLC-3100 is exhibiting the same behavior with PRETEC 2GB 133x. I managed to boot once with the device inserted and  tried formatting the card in ext3. The process locked up, but successive removal and reinserts of the card allowed it to continue until finish. Another time, I tried to insert with the system up. The keyboard locked up, but the screen keyboard was working ok. It finally locked up completely in both situations. I did not get usefull info from syslog. Later I was not able to do it again. I am however able to use the same card connected in a usb SD adaptor connected to Zaurus.

I am wandering if it has any link with this, but I get very similar behavior (system locking up)  trying to use an Ambicom SD 11B wireless card.

Sharp ROM
Kernel 2.4.20

Can anyone positively confirm if 2gb MMC or MMCPlus cards work on any model Zaurus?

A-Data 2Gb  - 29

The A-Data Turbo SD 150X 2G card also fails on SL-C3100 (standard ROM). Only thing I noticed is it caused the keyboard to behave erratically (e.g. backgrounding programs like Qkonsole); removing the card didn't fix the problem, required a reboot. I don't have any other cards to see if it fried the controller as other posters have suggested, though I don't think it should have.
