Title: Cisco Device Management
Post by: slacks on August 03, 2005, 06:51:23 pm
I own a C860 running RC10, and I have the Sharp serial cable. Is there any way I would be able to manage a Cisco device with this setup?  Possibly with a gender change on the serial cable?  Any help would is appreciated.

You'll need the proper serial console adapter like you would for a laptop, and you might need a null modem adapter, but yeah you should be able to use the Z as a laptop replacement for console connections.  You also will need a terminal program like Minicomm.

Well at this point I have the sharp serial cable, a gender changer to female , then a db9 to rj45 then a rollover cable to the device.  Any idea what /dev the serial device is? ttys0?

Either ttys0 or ttys1. I don't remember which; I've reflashed my ROM and haven't used my GPS with my Z6k since, so I don't have a config to look at.  But, it's the same as an external serial GPS would be.  You can just hook it up to a PC with Hyperterminal or whatever to test it out if you don't have a Cisco device lying around to test it on.  (I do; I've got 3 2500's sitting around.)

The cables get kind of ridiculous... heh... I had to roll my own gender changer and null modem cables from spare parts around the house, and I ended up with this 20 foot Frankenstein's monster for a short time, till I broke down and went to Rat Shack.

I've only done it under the Sharp ROM on a 5500 and 6000, and I haven't used it in a while but IIRC the serial port is ttyS0. Of course just like any other console the settings need to be 8-none-1 at 9600, unless the device defaults have changed.

I found minicom works okay although the fonts can be a little squirrely. There is/was another QPE based terminal program that was much better suited to the task but I can't remember what it's called and I lost the bugger during one of many (re)flash sessions.

Either way, this setup has really pulled my buns out of the fire on more than one occasion when I locked myself out of a switch or router.

Hope this helps,
DirkP

Thanks for the great feedback.  Getting the null modem adapter in there was what I was missing.  Everything working great now over ttyS0. Thanks again!
