Title: Wpa_supplicant, 3.5.3, Hostap... Driver Troubles?
Post by: vputz on August 06, 2005, 01:17:01 pm
OK, my whining never ceases...

OZ 3.5.3 (Hentges); I'm wrestling with wpa_supplicant.  I have the wpa_supplicant.conf file set up, and so I try the following, with these results:

Code: [Select]
root@akita:/# wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ioctl[PRISM2_IOCTL_PRISM2_PARAM]: Operation not supported
Failed to enable WPA in the driver
ioctl[PRISM2_IOCTL_PRISM2_PARAM]: Operation not supported
Failed to disable WPA in the driver

lsmod shows hostap and hostap_cs installed.  I had heard that hostap provided client-side WPA, so thought this would be possible with my Buffalo WLI2-CF-S11, but perhaps I'm missing something horribly obvious.

Any suggestions?

Found in a different post to check the following (posting for others who may have this issue):

Code: [Select]
root@akita:/#hostap_diag wlan0
Host AP driver diagnostics information for 'wlan0'

NICID: id=0x800c v1.0.0 (PRISM II (2.5) PCMCIA (SST parallel flash))
PRIID: id=0x0015 v1.1.0
STAID: id=0x001f v1.3.5 (station firmware)

I read in a completely-unrelated-to-zaurus-or-Buffalo post that "That's too old firmware version, you will need to update it to 1.7.x or newer for WPA."

So perhaps I need to find a way to update the firmware in my Buffalo card, if that's possible...?

...looks like it is possible, but the zaurus prism2_srec command complains that the download operation is not permitted.  I'll try upgrading it elsewhere and see what I can do.

Now I have a problem--I don't have any device I can plug a CF lan card into except my zaurus, since my wife's laptop appropriately just has PCMCIA slots.  The only thing I can plug it into is the Z, which apparently can't upgrade it.  Oh, this is annoying!  It is very annoying!  It is like unto this: "NGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

Any suggestions on how to upgrade my firmware?

Please reply if you got this to work (or, didn't for that Matter).

I've got to try this soon myself and would like to benefit from your scars

Sad news: No progress.  Other things in life assaulted me (my home server has been trying to disintegrate, for one thing, and we bought and moved into a house, for another--so I haven't had time for the zaurus).

Anyway, I never became convinced that a CF-to-pcmcia adapter would work, just because the ones I could find really just seemed to be flash card readers with a pcmcia plug.  I think it should be possible, but I'm just not sure how to go about it.  I'm going to wrestle with some of the local computer support shops and see if I can find one that's a) actually adept, and  wouldn't mind giving it a try.

I can provide hostap-modules with download option for current OZ kernels - tell me which exactly machine you have and which kernel use.

ok, once I persuaded cardmgr to load the hostap driver (had to edit the config files AND kill -1 cardmgr), I then get the eth0 + wifi0 interfaces...

prism2_srec says operation not permitted.

hmmm. I've got a pcmcia/cf adaptor *somewhere*, so I'll see what my linux laptop does.

you need to manually enable one option in hostap_config.h before compiling to get firmware update functionality

This something I should invest the time/effort to build with OE, or should I just beg you? (grin-- C1000, using the Hentges 3.5.3 release, and uname -r says "2.4.20" for kernel version).

You're a prince!  These worked fine; I was able to upgrade the firmware in my card to 1.7.4, and was able to start up wpa_supplicant and (eventually) get an IP address.

I'm actually curious about that.  Running wpa_supplicant worked--I had it running in one window and started another console to try for a DHCP address.  But it took about a minute for the DHCP thing to come through, and then everything became SLOW... for example, I tried pinging something on the local network, and it took about 10-15 seconds before it started sending packets, and once it did the Z was almost totally unresponsive; I could see packets being sent/received, but pressing ctrl-c didn't do anything... and neither did clicking on the screen (no acknowledgement click even!).  And then it all caught up at once.

So I'm not quite saved yet, I'm afraid.  But at least technically it's working... it's just not usefully working.  Any idea what may be using up the extra cycles?

encryption is done by CPU not by card probably - I did not tried WPA yet.

My error.  I finally noticed that my DVR computer wasn't connecting well via WPA either.  The problem lay in my wireless router, which had not been rebooted in a while (need to upgrade as soon as dd-wrt v23 is final).

Anyway, I rebooted my router, and both DVR and Zaurus were very happy, fast connections, much joy.

Many thanks to those who helped; I'm glad to finally have the Z on the net!  Admittedly, I still have to manually run wpa_supplicant and udhcpc, but it's a good start.
