Title: What Are Hentges Roms ?

Hi !
I saw a couple of threads talking about Hentges Roms. The people using it seem to be quite happy , but I couldn't find one listing the differences/advantages of Henges vs. the regular OpenZaurus ?
I could find something about CardFs and installing some software on the SD card - but that's all.
Could anyone give me a brief overview ? (or a link where I can read about it ?)

Look at hentges.net for further details and screenshots.

I feel that it is similar to OZ3.5.3 with an opie frontend, and it has all been bundled together with a number of useful packages, and tweaks that makes a stable user friendly rom.

Hentges is the best I could find until my 5500 broke down. Seriously worth a try
for anyone with a 5500...

Hello snubnose,

Hentges ROMs are basically OpenZaurus ROMs.

The distribution (OpenZaurus) is compiled by the newest (working) sources,
the GUI (Opie) is mostly the same version as shipped with the original OZ ROM.

Only in very few instances I choose to build CVS versions of Opie, Akita is such a case as 1.2.0 has no support for Akita.

The "bleeding edge" OZ version BTW was the reason why the infamous "r21" kernel for Collie only worked with Hentges ROMs  

All ROM's ship with a large selection of software (http://hentges.net/misc/zaurus_look.shtml), installed automatically (http://hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/docs/cardfs_howto.shtml) onto your SD card during the first boot. In other words: you won't have any fun w/o an SD or CF card with this ROM.

In addition to the above, Hentges ROMs ships with a few little helpers to make life
easier:
- altboot (http://hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/docs/altboot.shtml) bootmanager to boot CF, SD or NFS drives / images
- /home/root on SD
- Pre-configured Opie enviroment
- and more

Is the 5600/poodle version of hentges working? I'm thinking about trying it since my Socket wifi card isn't working in standard OZ 3.5.3.

As a user, Hentges is a great replacement rom. Flexibility of RAM allocation (instead of standard 32-30, get 64-0, 48-16 etc), ease of installation, choice of installing prefabbed set of crucial apps (cardfs_install) ... in short, great!

Hentges Roms have a lot of fixes that eliminate the hassle with setting up various applications on the 5500.  Alot of small bugs were fixed too.  Best rom I've used to date on my 5500.  

You have to have a decent size SD card to install the preconfigured apps but its worth it.

I have a question about this rom for the 5600.  Is it OK to install everything to internal flash?  I don't like to have my SD card "locked" in so I can't swap them out.  I just tried installing the whole thing including the cardfs on internal flash and it seems fine so far.

Is this OK?

As long as your flash is large enough, this isn't a problem.
