Title: Sl-c3100 Battery And Pc Cable
Post by: Sheila on August 17, 2005, 03:29:24 pm
I'm figuring out which accessories to get a price quote from various vendors with a SL-C3100. My first question is, to what port does the included PC to Zaurus cable connect to? Is it serial, or USB or what? If not USB, what is the part no. of a USB cable? (I'm looking at this page: http://www.wolf.ne.jp/syuhen/zaurus.html) (http://www.wolf.ne.jp/syuhen/zaurus.html)). My laptop is USB 1.1 running Gentoo Linux, so if I don't need to connect any USB devices to the Zaurus, do I even need the USB cable? I'm assuming the only way to connect a HD directly is with a USB cable.

Can I connect to the internet (through my laptop) using the stock cable (or USB cable), or would I need a CF LAN or CF 802.11b card?

Second, I want an extra battery in case the first one dies. I see there are two different batteries, the stock battery and a larger capacity model, but I see battery covers...!??? If I get the larger capacity battery, do I need a different battery cover? Is this battery larger? Does it make the unit unbalanced in my hand? Is the capacity that much more? If I have the Zaurus plugged into AC, can I switch batteries without rebooting? I'm assuming a shutdown is required when not plugged in...

Would I get faster performance if I bought a SL-C1000 with a fast SD or CF card? Would the performance be noticeably better, or quieter?

I have a Rio Karma with Futuresonic earbuds. Has anybody compared the sound of the Zaurus vs. a Karma? Is there any noise I can hear through the headphones? Is the Sharp remote control specific to a particular piece of software? ie., If I loaded a third-party ROM or installed OpenBSD, will the remote control be a paperweight?

Has anyone shipped a Zaurus to Canada by DHL? How much did they rape you for customs brokerage?

The C3100 comes with an USB on-the-go cable that connects the zaurus to your PC. it can connect  as a USB drive or you can connect in sync/pc link mode.....

the case is sized for the larger battery, so the smaller one should just fit inside...

i use a wireless card to connect, it seems much easier than going through the USB cable...

with the stock battery, i've only run the battery down to half-way, even after using the wireless for well over 3 hours.

I bought a spare battery, but haven't ever needed it yet.

I went to Japan to get my C3100.

linux has usbnet (there's a driver for windows too) which allows you to run tcp/ip over usb. this is the true power of a portable linux device - a full network stack and applications...

This means you can control your Z from the PC, and vice versa with VNC. You can also upload files to the Z with ssh, and use smb to do network file shares.

It's also the quickest way to install software on your Z - the ipkg command will download package lists from "feeds" and allow you to install them.

Sync'ing takes place using tcp/ip, and can do it over usb cable or bluetooth or wireless.

The default cable that comes with Zs is just a usb cable. I'd advice getting usb sync/charge cable which frees you from a mains adaptor.

I don't have a SL-C3100 yet, but I noticed it was mentioned more than once here that the SL-Cxx00 cannot be charged by usb like the 860. I presume that the default shipped cable is different from the sync/charge-cable and prevents you from frying your internal charger.

There's picture of what ships with the C3100 here: http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/sl-c3100/ (http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/sl-c3100/)

Thanks for the reply. A portable linux workstation is what I'm looking for... But, I'm still unclear about USB cables. If I want to connect to my laptop via USB, I'm fine with the stock cable. But, if I want to use a USB keyboard, or a powered portable HD, I need a different 'host' cable? Is that correct? Is that what mini-A is, vs. mini-B? What if I want to connect to an ethernet or USB hub?

I have some USB cables I got with my camera and Rio. Blurry pictures are attached. A U$40 price I've seen for cables seems like highway robbery to me, but I want to be able to use the Zarus effectively.

to connect a usb peripheral, you need a different cable.

you can get one for $10 from StreamineCPUs. it took me less than a week to get one from them a couple of weeks ago. i got my wireess card from them as well. i cannot tell from your photos whether one of your existing cables would work, but probably not. you would at least need an adapter...
