I can understand that, however we won't even start working on it until Sharp releases the kernel sources. If you are the legit owner of a C3100, please pester them to do that asap.

Any hints on how to do just that?
I got my C3100 the other day and I'm just keen on OZ as original poster.

You could try mailing them or calling. Perhaps they have email addresses or phone numbers on the written statement about GPL conformance.

I have an C3100, and they distributed the kernel sources on the CDrom.   AFIK, I can post them according to the rules of the GPL (redistribution).

They were on the CDs??? Bummer, then people should've uploaded them months ago.

Anyway, I'm currently compiling something that's supposed to be pretty much OpenZaurus 3.5.4 for a Borzoi and will put it up to http://www.Vanille.de/temp/borzoi (http://www.Vanille.de/temp/borzoi)

I'd appreciate feedback.

I have successfully installed the Borzoi on my C3100 and its under heavy testing.

I only noticed few points:

1. on the booting process, it show some hard disk inode error.
2. the font in the console missed up, hardly see a word.
3. the power on/off button doesn't work

I'll dig futher.

Abum

This is pretty normal.

Try using 'apm -s' in the meantime from the command line (assuming you can see what you're typing), or if it's an opie-image there's a suspend entry on the 'start menu'.

2. the font in the console missed up, hardly see a word.
The standard recommendations for all clamshell models apply.
Be sure to rm $HOME/Settings/*.conf before flashing Opie, so you get the new default values copied into the .conf files.

I didn't clean up my hd, it was used for Sharprom,QT.

So do I need to reformat it before I install OZ?

what is the partition requirement and size for each partition?

No need to reformat, I just said you should rm $HOME/Settings/*.conf - nothing more. Oz always works with the standard SharpROM partitioning, we don't support partitioning hacks.

I did what you told, rm $HOME/Settings/*.conf and then re install OZ.

but the result is the same. problems:

1. fonts within terminal console missed up, no line break, spacing is like tab
2. keys are missing, I can't use CAP letters, SHIFT+keys will not work, "`" is missing.

I just wonder, if I use the updater.sh from Borzoi and install OZ 3.5.3 kernel instead will work?? considering a try?

1. odd, try to open console -> edit profile -> default -> and choose a monotype font.
2. oops, my fault. initscripts is missing the keymap support. I've uploaded a better initscript to the site - that should get the keys working.

Thanks Mickeyl!

there are only two fonts(one normal, and one mono) available for this kernel.  Is it possible for you to add more to the OZ or there is a way I can add them? because I want to use the fonts from sharprom.

Also, is this kernel Borzoi built with everything? if not can I have a request to have it built with everything?

I will dig more into Borzoi, let you know when I find new stuff.

as a newb, could someone post a link to the install instructions for bringing OpenZaurus up on my SL-C3100?  I'd like to load it today, test, and report results.

Nevermind!  I used the instructions for SL-C3100 (http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/installation/sl-c1000/) and now I'm running Opie.
_____

One question though -- given the extremely high resolution of this 640x480 3.7" screen (and my old eyes) -- the Opie interface is very difficult to see.

The Zaurus's zoom functions don't seem to do anything at the desktop level.  Is there a way to get the zoom keys (Fn-1, Fn-2) to work?

I did use the Appearance applet to up the font size from 10 to 14, so that's a little better.

Most user interface elements should be reasonable sized (except some spin box buttons) when you removed your old settings in $HOME (as advised).

I did move the $HOME/Settings/*.conf files aside before putting OZ on.

My SL-C3100 booted into OZ just fine, but I came across a few issues that made me go back to the Sharp ROM (the one from here:  [a href=\"http://www.trisoft.de/en_c3100howto.htm)]http://www.trisoft.de/en_c3100howto.htm)[/url].  List of issues:

(1) The console app's fonts are still pretty messed up.  You can pick a larger size than the default (which improves readability), but there didn't seem to be a fixed-width font available;  so it was very difficult to read the text in the window.  E.g., output of ls and ifconfig were all non-columnar and therefore very difficult to read.

(2) If I used the Qtopia menu to switch to "Terminal 1," I got the text login screen and never could figure out how to switch back to the Qtopia GUI -- each time I had to reboot.

(3) The Kbrowser and network would not work reliably with my Linksys WCF12 WiFi CF card -- web pages sometimes loaded, but only about 10% of the time.  Most times the browser failed to load the page and simply timed out.  I could ping my access point just fine from the console window, so basic connectivity seemed to be working.  Note that when I put the Sharp ROM [trisoft.de version] back on, NetFront 3.1 loaded/rendered web pages flawlessly.  In both cases, I was sitting about 2 meters from my WiFi access point, so the only difference was in the software being run.

(4) I didn't see how to turn the desktop background/wallpaper off;  I wanted to set it to a plain blue, because the default Opie background image is smaller than the 640x480 screen, and gets tiled in a fairly distracting manner.  I probly just did not search thru the settings sufficiently.
_____

Let me know what else I can do to test / provide feedback for OZ on the SL-C3100.  I'm very interested in exploring OZ/Opie further, as it seems better than the Sharp ROM in some areas (e.g., I've had trouble installing Wellenreiter II on Sharp ROMs, but having it pre-installed in OZ was a great help;  also, the net config tool does let you scan for visible/local networks -- the Sharp ROM network applet doesn't do scanning like that, which is a real pain in an urban environment where there are a dozen AP's nearby...).

P.S.:  I used the trisoft.de NAND-Flash image mentioned above instead of my own NAND-Flash image of the Sharp ROM originally shipped to me by Dynamism:  the trisoft.de image seems to be a slightly newer build of Qtopia, and they also pre-install useful stuff like KA/Pi, KO/Pi, OM/Pi.

Well, I've installed the version you've uploaded, and it's loking pretty good.    These are the issues I am seeing now:

1) Playing MP3 files, sound is choppy, reason unknown
2) Default font size is a bit small -- workaround is go through Appearance and boost to 14point
3) The microdrive seems to "dissapear" after a while .. it goes to sleep and never comes back.
4) The /etc/fstab refers to /dev/hda1 as SD, when in fact /dev/hda is the microdrive

What software? Presuming it's xine based, have you set it to softsync (which is required with the faster processor equiped machines).

Does that mean it's mounted as /media/card then? Something to add to the bugtracker or tell Mickeyl about.

Well, they weren't on any of the three CD's shipped with my C3100. Strange that it differs. Good that someone got 'em, that's all that's needed.

Today I flashed my SLC-3100 following the instructions at http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/installation/sl-c3000/ (http://openzaurus.org/wordpress/installation/sl-c3000/).

It starts, but not the GPE gui!!!

I looked at the fact that the file gpe-image-borzoi-20051022114722.rootfs.img is not a TGZ as for the other Zaurus models, so it didn’t flashed anithing.

I need to rename the above file to hdimage1.bin instead of hdimage1.tgz?

Please help me as soon as possibile.

Thank you very much!

I installed the 3.5.4RC1 because the 3.5.6 with kernel 2.6 i s very unstable.

I found these problems:

 - it's very slow
 - sometimes the boot process hangs up
 - audio does not work
 - usb port does not work

At this moment I cannot remember other problems, sorry!

So basically what it says here:

http://www.rpsys.net/openzaurus/ (http://www.rpsys.net/openzaurus/)

The boot process hanging sounds like a possible instability, however the other things just sound like the port's not finished yet (which is the case).

I am interested in the running slowly thing though - you sure this is kernel related?
