Title: Welcome To The Zaurus Openbsd Forum!
Post by: obscurite on August 17, 2005, 09:59:54 pm
Well, maybe this will be a good resource for folks who want to try the new Zaurus support in the OpenBSD 3.7 arm port!

Thanks offroadgeek!

LINKS:
Project page - http://www.openbsd.org/zaurus.html (http://www.openbsd.org/zaurus.html)
Install docs - ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/3.7/zaurus/INSTALL.zaurus (http://ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/3.7/zaurus/INSTALL.zaurus)

P.S. I had difficulty subscribing to the arm port mailing list via gmail. If anyone is already a member, please post a link to this forum on the mailing list.

Good day!

Since next the OpenBSD release is near, do use 3.8-beta[0], install instructions
here[1].

The newer version has tons of usb(umass) and apm(sleep on battery low, )
 improvements.

It also has the cool package update(pkg_add -u) stuff by miod, making ports
upgrade a breeze.

Additional info on my OpenBSD zaurus here[2].

I want to ask if there is really anyone having openBSD on their Z..
if so, can those tell me if it is stable or not?
and it seems that the installation instructions are so complicated

Yeah, they're saying they're working on C1000 and CXXX. But as of 3.7, it's just the C3XXX models that are supported, although I'm sure from what I saw on the arm ports mailing list that some C1000 owners are running it.

Hi.

OpenBSD/zaurus is installed in my SL-C3000.

If it becomes accustomed, the installation work is not difficult. I used wireless LAN and installed it.

The operation of OpenBSD/zaurus is very steady. X Window System moves well, too.

Being able to install various application programs with the ports system is a charm.

I think that it is a very happy experience that uses OpenBSD/zaurus.

However, though now is crazy about the installation and the use of e17 to GPE.

Is it possible to see (impressive) screenshots ?

FYI : I was told that the OpenBSD team has bought more than 20 C3000.

Someone I know who runs OpenBSD on their C3000 mentioned slow compile times as one problem... can anyone provide some benchmarks? How long does hello world take to compile? How about a kernel? Or even s source package for vi... or whatever

WA! It rocks!
Another thing I want to know about it is the speed
what is the speed of running application?
does it support openoffice?
if so, what is the time to start it?
(i want to use this to compare the speed with pdaxrom)
Also, can i run qt application in this rom?

Another question, do i need to complie the application myself?
or there is/will be a feed?

and i forgot a thing in the previous post

Kernel Compiles:
About an hour, for local CF builds.
     USB HDD, an hour.
NFS over USB net about 1.5 hrs.

I don't usually compile kernel, userland and X11 sources, I upgrade via
snapshots.  Except if there are interesting commits on the tree ;).

For ports, eg kismet, about an hour, though I'll usually download the sources
and mass compile/install packages overnight on a usb hdd.  There are prebuild
packages on openbsd website[0], do use test them for release.

For X11 apps, tolerable.  I have xfig, konqeuror-embedded, dia. etc installed.
I am usually at the console running screen, mutt, vi, elinks, cplay, etc.

No.  I personally use antiword to view word docs, and abiword to edit them, for
my reports and documents i use LaTeX,.
No solutions for xls files(gnumeric is a pig, ;))
I use magicpoint for my presentations.

Good luck, even on the i386, a smooth running OpenOffice uses linux emulation.

QT, as in native zaurus apps?  No, AFAIK there is no linux emulation in
openbsd-arm.

I installed 3.8 beta, and it is stable. No crashes so far. The installation instructions are indeed complicated and inacurate in places, but they make more sense once you installed successfully.

1) At the start, the installation procedure states that a DOS partitions can be used to install, but later claims that only fss and ext2 are supported.

2) The openbsd37_arm.ipk for 3.8 beta cannot be installed (either with the GUI or from the command line). Something to do with incorrect permissions while installing (I was root when I tried to install). The only technique which worked was to insmod the zbsdmod.o and running zboot.

3) rc.zboot script was not installed. I had to fetch it from the web and manually install it to get to the bsd boot prompt. This meant remounting the / directory to be writable and copying the file to the expected location.

4) The disk labeling process never stated that the a partition should be at the beginning of the A6 partition. I created the b partition first which prevented bsd from booting (the machine failed to boot with a very obscure error message).

5) Right in the midle of the installation instructions, there is a reference to running newfs to intialize a new dos file system (and shrinking the existing dos partition). This makes no sense to a user who never ran bsd before. The majority of existing Z users are Linux users.

6) The recovery procedure (what to do to restore a corrupted system) should be moved to the end of the instructions (in a separate section). Right now, it is right in the midle of the installation procedure, causing the user to wonder about what to do if recovery is not needed.

There are many other possible variations to the install, I only went through one of them.

What is the *exact* date of the 3.8 you installed?  I installed almost
all the snapshots released and had not encountered this issue.

This should have been taken care of by the ipkg.

Not explicitly yes, but INSTALL.zaurus did state this:

Quote
Next the disk label which defines the layout of the OpenBSD file systems
must be set up.  The installation script will invoke an interactive
editor allowing you to do this.  Note that partition 'c' inside this
disk label should ALWAYS reflect the entire disk, including any
non-OpenBSD portions.  If you are labeling a new disk, you will probably
start out with an 'a' partition that spans the disk.  In this case you
should delete 'a' before adding new partitions.  The root file system
should be in partition 'a', and swap is usually in partition 'b'.  If
you have Linux partitions defined on the disk, these will usually show
up as partition 'h', 'i' and so on.
Quote
5) Right in the midle of the installation instructions, there is a
reference to running newfs to intialize a new dos file system (and
shrinking the existing dos partition). This makes no sense to a user who
never ran bsd before. The majority of existing Z users are Linux users.

[flamegear engagage]
OpenBSD installation assumes that the reader has thourouly done their
homework *before* installing it.  Meaning the audience has already read
and reread the installation documentation, browsed through the openbsd
faq[] for general queries, read though the archives other user
experiences and notes.

OpenBSD was never designed for the majority of linux users and PDA
market in general.  It is mainly a product of geeks that enjoy creating
secure code and systems.  Hence its appeal usually is strong on the
systems and network administrator types as well as the developer people.
It is *not* aimed at mass market.  (This is harsh to a geek exposed
mainly to linux environment but that is reality, browse a few months
worth of the openbsd-misc mailing list).
[/flamegear disengage] ;)

Quote
6) The recovery procedure (what to do to restore a corrupted system)
should be moved to the end of the instructions (in a separate section).
Right now, it is right in the midle of the installation procedure,
causing the user to wonder about what to do if recovery is not needed.

Early OpenBSD users and developers ran onto this issue, hence its
prominence.

Again, thanks for the comments.

Barry has it 100% right.  OpenBSD is by geeks for geeks.  If you want a pretty GUI environment with easy to use applications, stick with Linux.

If you want to challenge yourself by learning a powerful OS and want a more flexible developer-centric environment than the Linux distro that comes with the Zaurus, then OpenBSD is for you.

It's an extremely powerful OS if you are willing to learn.  For example, I wrote a script that sets up the Zaurus as a portable wireless access point with firewalling, network address translation and a DHCP server.  It works well when I travel and it was a great learning experience.

Cheers,

Patrick

Hello,

i've owned a sl-c3000 for almost 1 year now. I've used sharp rom for 6 months and then cacko rom for 5 months. During the last two weeks, i've tried openzaurus, pdaxrom which won't work with sl-c3000 due to memory issue.

yesterday i've installed openBSD 3.8 found in the snapshots. I've followed the install instructions and it's an amazing work you've done. I'm really impressed. The most impressive part is that i am able to dual boot either to cacko rom or to openBSD and the install needed just to launch ipkg manager... i feel i'll keep my cacko rom to wake me up in the morning and run kapi/kopi til i'll manage installing and configuring openBSD as i wish.

but i can say for others that my wlan card (asus wl-110) was recognized and configured for wifi in 2 minutes afterboot. i love the man pages in openBSD, and i find in this environment all the things that made me love slackware a few years ago...

well thanks again.

hello folks,
openbsd on the zaurus is really a great idea!

though i'm not familiar with *bsd, i managed to get some network stuff running and install a windowmanager. i tried xfce4 but it was too lame, so i decided for fluxbox.

a problem i still have is getting the input devices right. i guess xmodmap will help with alt- and function-keys, does anyone know the keycodes for the 2 japanese keys? and can you give me a hint on how to get the right click (fn + tap) working?

sorry if these are stupid questions, i rtfm and stfw already.

Hey Barry, thanks a lot for your advice!

I gather that zkbd should be working out of the box, right? Apparently, this is not the case with my installation... although dmesg indicates that everything is fine. It could be that i mixed up 3.8 and snapshot components - don't know if that could cause problems.

Anyway, for fluxbox, i just put 'Control m :RootMenu' into ~/.fluxbox/keys and this solves my main problem with the missing right click. And for the missing Keys - it's not really urgent, so i'll try to find a way on my own and eventually post a more detailed description & solution.

Have a good time!

- Not much activity here, but it's slightly after November 2005, and the openBSD site seems to say 4.0 is the latest, though I didn't find (or flat-out missed) any mention of a C1k on there.  Did see the unstable feed links but didn't poke much.
- Essentially SD is all I've got at the moment.  Will this work on a C1k and a big SD card?  Or should I hang it up 'cause 64MB isn't enough to run this without swap?
- Thanks for your time...
