First, sorry if this is a FAQ, but I've not found the answer yet...
OK, I'm a brand new C1000 owner. I'm fiddling around with it a bit and am running into a problem right off. The first is sort of minor in that I just want to know what they keys are for; the second is less so.
1. What do the two keys between the CTRL and "-" do?
2. The question mark (?) character isn't appearing. As I understand the mapping it should appear when I hit SHIFT-. , but I'm getting a ">" sign. FN-SHIFT-. gives me a right curly brace. The key by itself gives a period (.). Help.
3. On keys like the period key there is a character to the left of the main key. I don't know how to access that character. It doesn't seem to appear with FN or FN-SHIFT combinatins.
Ah, the joys of learning a new system that is only sold in Japan (sigh... )

well my keys are just fine.
first off and before making any nand restore because that is whats going to take to get it to japanese original if nand restore is that to start off with-
you need to install this when you have restored your zaurus to the point were it is now japanese.

and make sure you download this file mcconvert_0.1a_arm.ipk so this file makes your zaurus english

Cresho, why would I want to set my C1000 back to its Japanese original state? English is what I want, and it's what I have. I just can't seem to get a "?" out of that key. As I said in the first message.

Sharp comes from japan and the original backup is japanese. If you ever wanted to restore it to its default nand restore to factory spec, what better way to do it right?
I always have been told and keep the idea of having all your tools ready and available for that one time if something ever goes wrong.
Lets say down the line you totally hose your zaurus and you want to restore your zaurus to its default settings, what better way to do it dont you think so?
Lets just say i toyed with it enough to understand how backup and restore works.
Big example here- I was playing with a 2gb sd drive. it destroyed my sd drivers as posted here. https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...14192&hl=2gb+sd (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14192&hl=2gb+sd) and suddenly my zaurus dies and was stuck on stupid frozen mode. unplugging the battery and reseting it did not work at all because it totally hosed operating system after a hard reset. i had no access. I did have access to backup and restore and when it did, the zaurus was still shot! i had no sd driver even after a restore from a backup file. so what that does is replace missing files and keep files that you have without replacing. So sd drivers was lost totally.
answer was nand restore and restore. Nifty thing is having tools you need from the start. Of course i had to guess through the japanese language but it was simple. install and reboot and its english. then backup and restore and all was fine. I also use this process when toying with new software making sure i have all dependencies.
check out my snes i covered all tools available because.............i had all the tools from the start to trouble shoot any problems available....and helped alot of people...probably 100+ and my email got flooded and ...that was fun
my answer was a nand restore, mc convert(converts to english), and did a restore.
I'm just giving you some extra options incase you might need em one day.

ohh one last thing
do a search on keyhelper to fix your problem
there are 2 file installer and a keyhelper.xml...you can then modify any keys to work your zaurus.
i have all the tools but im late for the movies.....later.

If I understand what Cresho is saying correctly, he thinks that your system is messed up and that you should do a restore.
I use my Zaurus in Japanese, so I'm not familiar with what happens when you do an English conversion. Does the English conversion affect the key mapping in any way? Anyway, I'll try and answer your questions to the best of my ability.
1. In the Japanese version, the keys between Ctrl and - are used for Japanese-language-specific items. I don't know if they have any different function for an English-converted model.
2. On my 3100, the question mark is typed by hitting shift-period (the question mark is on that key, so no surprise).
3. On my 3100, pressing Fn + a key brings up the "alt" key printed above the key itself. I would assume the 1000 is the same.
So in conclusion, it sounds like something may indeed be wrong with the way your Zaurus is acting.

The problem was with keyhelper.xml. The version installed on my Z clearly has a bug in it. I found another version (from Trisoft) that works the way it should. I also see how the xml is working, so if I want I can redo it myself. This is good because I've not got much of a clue how the KeyHelperConf application works.
I'm going to have to get VNC running if I have to do a lot of fiddling about. WOrking directly on the Z in terminal (and ee or vi) is a pain. I can type a lot faster on a standard keyboard and can read my desktop screen easier too.
Once I get that all done, then I can start really having fun.

Hey Ken, don't forget your C1000 has USB host, so you can plug in an external keyboard! Might be more convenient than working via VNC.
By the way, I have a question too! I'm using the Trisoft C1000 conversion, and I have a problem in the Terminal App: Fn-F and Fn-K produce a Yen character. In all other apps, these key combinations both produce a backslash.
The other wierd thing is that in the Terminal app, backslash seems to display as the Yen character. For example, if I type echo $PS1, the result is displayed with Yen characters where the backslashes should be.
Any idea how to resolve this??

Sooo...as a student of Japanese how could I keep my Zaurus thinking it is Japanese while displaying menu output and such in english. I would also like to make use of the Japanese to English dictionary as well as keep any and all other Japanese goodness on the unit or even add some if necessary!
I have found several threads on the subject, but my newbness prohibits me from utilising the knowledge! Any help is greatly appreciated.
