Title: Killer Applications For Pdaxrom
Post by: omro on August 22, 2005, 06:48:20 am
Hi All,

Again another fact finding mission. I don't know about you, but I find that this ROM is probably the most flexible one, because it treats the Z as a mini laptop and less like a pda. This of course means more fully fledged apps are more likely to be found on here. Am curious what other people consider to be the killer applications for pdaXrom that they either

use currently
or
would like to see

Personally, when I've used pdaXrom I've mainly used abiword and gnumeric, though I'd love to see openoffice on there.

So my killers apps are:

1) OpenOffice - can't wait for that on pdaXrom.
2) A PIM, haven't decided on one yet, but really don't like the interface to the ko/pi - way too cluttered - any suggestions for a simpler, cleaner one?
3) Apache, PHP, and MySQL - already available, yay!
4) Web Browser - Firefox seems OK.
5) HTML/PHP editor - any suggestions?
6) PDF reader, the one that comes with pdaXrom doesn't seem to open many of my PDFs :-(

Some people use very specialised apps, so it would just be interesting to see the cross section of apps people are using :-)

It would be great if people could post to this, because it would give me (and others I hope) some ideas, for example there may be an app out there that can be used in pdaXrom that I would never normally know about and if I knew, I'd be thinking "wow, what a bonus being able to do that would be!"

I rarely use firefox to browse on my zaurus - way too slow.

I use dillo for anything that will render.

Most of the time, I ssh -X into one of my linux boxes and run firefox off of it remotely.  The performance is much better than running firefox locally.

I like TuxCards as a hierarchical notes application.

I use python/pygtk for development.  the SciTE editor is pretty basic but it does syntax highlighting.  Most of the time I just use vi.

mxrvt is a good terminal application because it supports multiple tabs (but the transparency doesn't work).

#1 thing I'd like is an easier path to compiling my own apps. If there was a way to get more "power to the people" in this regard, the whole question of "which apps..." would be a lot less important than now. In the meantime...  :

Anything and everything from here would be a start. There's not enough recon and pentesting apps available for pdaxrom (yet) imho.

http://wi-foo.com/index-3.html (http://www.wi-foo.com/index-3.html)

Airjack drivers would be nice
Or even a pentester version of pdaxrom, now that'd be a treat...

and more encrypted transmission stuff (apps with gpg, ssl, various login schemes, etc enabled and working), especially mail and transfer clients.

OpenOffice is good as an idea, but personally I wouldnt have the patience to use it, 400mhz is just not enough power. Lighter-weight apps certainly fare best on z. That said, all mannner of systems and network administration tools seem the most logical fit for the platform.

OT, but overall security tightening would also be a good thing -- Single user capability, etc...that may be even more important than more apps...

Well OpenOffice runs ok on my C1000 using the Sharp Rom and X/QT + Debian Route. OK, it's take a while to react sometimes and ages to load a file, but I don't know of anything that has such a breadth of hardware types.

I have OpenOffice on my PC desktop at work, my Mac laptop at home and it works on the Z, awesome.

Are there any decent, light weight Office Suites for Linux?

This might be a dumb question, can the Sharp PIM suite run on pdaXrom?

That'd be cool, though the Z's smaller screen may be a little overwhelmed, but that'd be amazing on the Z am sure! :-)

Might give that a go on my Mac

i'm sure it's a bit heavyweight, but i'd love to have evolution on my z.

i have an exchange server to store my calendar and contacts at home, so having a program that can speak with the server would really be a killer.

If it's possible to put gnome on the Z, isn't Evolution a component of that now?

i'd think that gnome would be a bit too heavy for the zaurus, but i don't know how bad just evolution would be compared to both.  either way, it would really be a killer appp for me.

That's a shame, gnome looks so nice.

Honestly, you could probably use gnome (kde is useable.....) but it would probably piss you off after awhile.  if you have room, install mozila and use mozilla-mail for a bit. I think moz-mail is lighter and faster that evolution (couldn't swear to it, though) and see if you find it acceptable.  or run kde for a bit.   You might see about the minimum dependencies for evolution, too..
