Title: Pim Software
Post by: Sequethin on August 25, 2005, 04:19:23 pm
I've been holding out on my openbsd install until I have some proof that I can actually use something other than a text editor for managing my dates and addresses. Anyone know if there is something like KA/PI (http://pi-sync.net/) working ? I really need to keep track of dates and phone numbers (that's why I have a PDA, believe it or not )

Whats wrong with vi or $EDITOR? ;)

The ports tree has Kontacts(x11/kde/pim3), Evolution(mail/evolution,
Jpilot(comms/jpilot), calentool(misc/calentool), plan(misc/plan).

Personally, I use calendar[0] for reminders/todo's/birthdays/etc,
abook(databases/abook) for contact management, and Mutt(mail/mutt) for
mail.  I am also meaning to look up tdl(productivity/tdl).

My PDA toys a while ago was the Palm IIIxe, TRGpro and iPod syncd via
jpilot and/or Kontacts.

For additional ports tree info, go here[1].  You can also search the
openbsd-misc archives[2] as there had been previous discussions on OpenBSD
PIM.

That's good news!  There are other OS options for the 3000 but I don't want to keep reinstalling everything on it (like I do on my pc)... so I look forward to a nice stable openbsd 3.8

I've been looking into http://vpim.rubyforge.org/ (http://vpim.rubyforge.org/) lately... I may have to hack up some text based pim stuff for myself. The ability to use vcard and vcalendars (icalendars, whatever) is important to me. There's even a sample script for converting mutt aliases to vcard. If I get anything substantial accomplished I'll report here, as most of the development will be done on my zaurus.

hello,

i too need kdepim to work with my sl-c3000 under obsd. So i've started compiling /usr/ports/x11/kde/pim3 a few days ago. Since default compilation of pim3 needs mysql, postgresql, qt_for_x11... and so on, it's a really long process. Especially as it takes a lot of space to download sources and compile obj files.

well as soon as the compilation will end, i'll post infos here and i'll try to put packages for zaurus somewhere.

Let me know how it goes for you, I started a thread a while back about my mission -
[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14974]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=14974[/url]

I also tried KA/PI (http://pi-sync.net/) and there's a thread about that too -
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15145 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15145)

No luck with either really. I think the pi-sync stuff is the way to go though, because it doesn't require an entire kde installation

i've seen your other threads. I've let down for a few days (was busy on holidays) because during compilation of qt3 my Z went out of swap space. So the program cannot compile anymore.

As i needed my PIM back, i've backup-ed my /usr/ports partition, re-installed cacko rom and i'll plan on re-installing obsd asap.

i'll keep you informed.

Please do! Right now I'm using mutt/abook. I want to try working with ical via a ruby script but I just don't have the time. So far I've been lucky enough to have a simple schedule  I know this will change... hopefully a gui PIM solution will be working before that time comes.......

I have gone for a best of both worlds deal...

I have JPilot installed and have all my contacts and calendar on that... I sync it to an old little Sony CLIE that I have for alerts (Yes from the Zaurus ).

I run Gringotts for my secure data and I run moinmoin for WikiPim note collection which I sync to a Gentoo box in case I want to run moinmoin on that instead of the Z (maybe the Z is compiling something large ) using unison.

If you don't resist Emacs, planner mode/org mode + bbdb + muse (wiki) + remember is  definitely a fantastic suite for PIM. They are feature-rich (you can even write your own easily if you know elisp); data is free-form and stored in text files, so it's easy to carry it around without worrying much about conversion or syncing hell. Speedy as well.

But of course i would also like to see how Evolution fares under OpenBSD.

I've started a thread here, though not very organized: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=23622 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=23622)
