Since pdaXrom is not available for the sl-3000, I decided to give openBsd for the zaurus a try. The installation is a bit of a challenge (particularly if you have a Linux background), but the result is worth the pain.

I need to play more with bsd to provide a complete answer. But from what I have observed so far, this implementation has the following very nice features,
1) This a full bsd distribution, the same one which can be installed on desktop class machines (bsd 3.8 beta).
2) Support for compiling all userland packages and the kernel natively. This is a truly amazing feature .
3) Includes gcc 3.3.5 and supporting libs, not the very old gcc 2.95.x.
4) All the unix man pages are included. This makes the system completely self contained.
5) This distribution is purely X window based, no need for QT at all.
6) Runs very well on the sl-3000.

Would it support the battery and rotate and suspend features?

obviously not! It won't of course!
but there is room for implimenting this stuff. Unless the author added it already?
were can we find a link of known bugs and missing features or fixed features>?

It runs X Windows, so you get a full GUI and choice of window manager/desktop environment just like you would if you ran OpenBSD with X on a desktop PC. BTW there is now an OpenBSD forum on oesf.

Suspend is supported. Just type "apm -z" in the shell and the unit goes to sleep within a second or two. Press the power button and it comes alive again, in the same state it was before going to sleep. Desktop machines can't do that so instantly, its very cool. I don't see an easy way to rotate the screen, wich is fine cause I don't have the need to do this. Bsd does not support my CF wireless card though (SocketComm), so I ordered one of the supported ones ($35 Linksys). I should get it next week so I can get on the internet with firefox, which is already intalled.
If you are hard set on the Linux way of doing things, you may dislike the Bsd way of doing the same things. But as I learn, I increasingly find the Bsd way more intuitive. In addition, since the very well written man pages are also installed, help is never more than a few keystrokes away.

5) pdaXrom uses X11 too, just few gui utils uses QT - i guess pure X window bsd need use vi for change system settings?

isn't xrotation built in if you have support for xrandr extensions (compiled into
the X server) ?
ya, bsd is definitely a good choice -- and when you have a 4GB microdrive, you
can probably pull it off.
what I like and want with pdaXrom is something thta's somewhat tailored and
has a SMALL footprint. Like what was said on another thread, I want the system
to boot and give me a default X login -- but have little else... perhaps just a
software install (deinstall) app ... let *ME* decide what I want to add.
Although it isn't smooth ,it does mostly work -- the ipk packages provide this.
There's a lot of work on pdaXrom to make it work with the Zaurus -- and that
work is appreciated. If a team of people also made openbsd work well on
the Zaurus, that can only be a good thing.

Ummm... maybe a very secure platform with excellent crypto? Just a guess...
(Not to start a Linux v. BSD flamewar)
Why not try OpenBSD? I'm using pdaXrom now, after trying Opie, and when the OpenBSD project supports C-860, I'll probably try it out too. Hell, if RISC OS were available I'd definitely give it a shot, even knowing RISC OS' disadvantages and advantages. (I hear it even runs on ARM architecture too...)

I sure appreciate the work. The problem that I have with most of the IPK packages, is that most of them were made once and never updated. With OpenBSD, I get up to date software. Sure, I have to compile it myself, but I'm a patient man if I know that it'll just work once installed.
